Background

Xue Pan first appears as the lecherous ghost possessing Wu Sheng. Acting under another ghost's orders, he possessed Wu Sheng nightly and caused havoc in the village. Even after being beaten into submission by Chan Xin and Old Gouzi, he refused to reveal the identity of the ghost who commanded him. Chan Xin released him out of respect for that loyalty. 48

His motives were later clarified by the Golden Toad. Xue Pan had encountered Li Meng with impure intentions, but after learning that Wu Sheng had driven her to suicide, he recognized her as his sister and sought revenge on her behalf. He regarded Wu Sheng's continued freedom as unjust, a conviction he later repeated while on trial before King Yama. 50 65

Xue Pan fought beside Chan Xin and Old Gouzi against the monster that had captured the Golden Toad. Using his spiritual body, he entered the creature through its rear and damaged it from within, enabling the others to finish it off. Although Chan Xin initially mistook this method for depravity, Xue Pan explained that he had acted because no one else could exploit the monster's weakness; Chan Xin apologized and accepted him as a true brother. 53

After the group became sworn brothers, Xue Pan was recognized as Fourth Brother. He asked Chan Xin to save Li Meng from her cycle of suicide, but accepted that self-inflicted death could not be overturned even by Heaven. 54 67

Xue Pan was later arrested in the Underworld over Wu Sheng's premature death. Terrified but defiant, he pleaded not guilty and argued that he had acted against Wu Sheng because of Li Meng's suffering. Chan Xin intervened before King Yama and defended him, allowing Xue Pan to return to the mortal realm. 64 65 66

Following this experience, Xue Pan vowed to reform and live peacefully with Huang Luoshi. He unsuccessfully tried raising cattle, then sold dried dog feces to medicine shops and collected scrap to support them. After becoming wealthy through antiques, he squandered his fortune, reconciled with Huang Luoshi, and was eventually left in debt when she absconded with his valuables. His resulting suicide attempt was stopped by Chan Xin, who arranged for his powers to be sealed and sent him to collect scrap in the Underworld. 67 73 74 75

He eventually found a new purpose in technology. Concluding that he could not excel through conventional mystical cultivation, Xue Pan converted his scrap-collecting vehicle, Donkey Riding Backwards, into a mecha beast and began cultivating a technological path. 227

Appearance

As a ghost, Xue Pan normally lacks a physical body. When working as an inventor, he wears a retractable welding mask and mechanical gear; in combat, Donkey Riding Backwards can disassemble and form fitted armor around him. 75 227 294

Xue Pan is openly lustful and often crude, but his behavior is tempered by a strong sense of loyalty and fairness. His concern for Li Meng led him to oppose Wu Sheng despite the danger, and he refused to expose the ghost who had given him orders even while being beaten and threatened. 48 50 65

He is easily frightened in battle, yet does not abandon his brothers. During the fight against the monster, he repeatedly panicked but still entered its body to attack its weakness. He likewise remained loyal during later conflicts with the Sato clan, arriving with Jin Buque and Old Gouzi to support Big Brother despite the risks. 53 219 248

After heartbreak and financial ruin, Xue Pan becomes more introspective. He chooses scrap collection as a way to temper himself, seeks Big Brother's advice, and gradually learns restraint, context in speech, and the importance of acting on what he understands. 73 324 325 359
