Early association with Chan Xin

Gouzi and Chan Xin have known each other for years. Their nicknames originated from their live-streaming names: Chan Xin used Gui Gui, while Gouzi used Gouzi, leading Chan Xin to call him “Old Gouzi” and Gouzi to call him “Old Ghost.” 46

After spending years in Beijing and later traveling south with Chan Xin, Gouzi returns to his village because of family matters. Short on money, he brings Chan Xin the case of Wu Sheng, hoping they can split the village's promised 30,000-yuan reward. 46

Village exorcisms

Gouzi assists Chan Xin's investigation of Wu Sheng's possession by gathering dog feces, rooster blood, high-proof liquor, cinnabar, and other ritual supplies. Initially unable to perceive the supernatural signs around Wu Sheng, he is visibly frightened but remains at Chan Xin's side. 47

He gains confidence while fighting the possessing spirit, imitating Chan Xin's mannerisms and forcefully questioning it after it is subdued. 47 When Wu Sheng later attacks him, Gouzi initially forgets to use the peach wood sword Chan Xin gave him; once reminded, he strikes back successfully and refuses to stop kicking Wu Sheng until restrained. 48 49

Sworn brotherhood
