Background / History
Big Brother describes his younger self as proud, introverted, timid, and obsessed with saving face. Despite his family’s limited means, his parents consistently treated him as a treasure and supported him into adulthood. 441
In the Underworld, he took control of a tavern and retained its waiter under a master-servant contract, arguing that the waiter’s useful skills made him worth keeping while the contract prevented betrayal. He later refused to join either the Earth Store Bodhisattva’s Buddhist faction or Zhong Kui’s Daoist faction, believing both positions had merits and flaws that should be integrated. 95 106
After killing Zuobian Shenteng, Big Brother drew the wrath of the Sato clan. Unable to meet an elder’s attack with his current strength, he used a newly comprehended technique to dissolve into primordial spirit and flee to the Underworld. He subsequently returned in a drastically changed human form and reunited with King Yama, Uncle Li, and the Underworld officials. 100 102
During the conflict with the Sato clan, he relied on bluffs, allies, and borrowed influence before suffering the loss of his limbs in battle. He continued fighting with his mouth and head until King Yama opened a retreat route; Big Brother was left behind during the escape. 248 250
While separated from his past, he adopted the name Chan Xin after Xiao Hu and Xiao Er repeatedly spoke of their missing “Invincible and Awesome Great Chan Xin Master.” Jin Buque, Xue Pan, Old Gouzi, Lesser Bodhisattva, and Ming Yue eventually recognized him as their long-lost Big Brother. 254 296
Appearance
Big Brother has repeatedly changed form. Upon returning to the Underworld, he appears as a handsome human around twenty years old; Meng Po initially fails to recognize him. 82 101
- His altered human appearance is described as handsome, with a compassionate expression touched by “demonic charm.” 101
- His outward appearance can be changed at will alongside shifts in his spiritual state. 105
- Though outwardly human, he claims to possess insight and inner qualities far beyond ordinary people. 363
- His aura can become overwhelming enough to intimidate enemies or calm those close to him. 309 360
Personality
Big Brother is flamboyant, mischievous, and openly fond of boasting. He turns his rebirth into a spectacle by hiring eight elderly women to carry him in a red palanquin while he sings all the way to King Yama’s Mansion. He also takes particular offense at humiliating nicknames, though he can be unexpectedly gentle with children and followers. 56 101
Beneath the theatricality, he is calculating and patient. While imprisoned, he feigns weakness until his rivals lower their guard, becomes the third overseer, and quietly engineers their punishment. He also prefers intimidation and psychological pressure over needless argument, describing ordinary antagonists as “ants” beneath his attention. 85 321
As a mentor, Big Brother emphasizes self-reliance rather than obedience. He encourages others to control their own thoughts, emotions, and habits, while warning them not to turn him into an object of blind dependence. 394 401 418
His compassion is selective but persistent: he refuses to teach harmful people how to exploit others, yet believes people with a genuine desire to improve should not be abandoned. 198 201
Abilities & Skills
Spiritual Transformation
Big Brother can dissolve and reconstruct his spiritual state rather than merely altering his physical form.
- Escaped a fatal attack by dispersing body and mind into a formless primordial spirit. 100
- Can shift his external appearance, aura, emotional state, and inner spiritual configuration. 105 423
- Retains or retrieves memories from the void after spiritual transformation. 105 298
- Must still adapt to the laws and energy system of a new world; strength in one realm does not automatically make him invincible in another. 105
Thought, Emotion, and Perspective Control
Big Brother treats thoughts and emotions as tools rather than fixed aspects of identity.
- Claims to enter and exit focused states as naturally as breathing. 208
- Can suppress, transform, or redirect thoughts and physiological reactions through conscious control. 379
- Reads behavioral patterns and intentions, allowing him to judge whether someone is kind, malicious, grateful, or exploitative. 174 201
- Can influence others’ emotions and perspectives, comparing unaware targets to marionettes moved by his hand. 321
Myriad Dharma Bodies and Phantom Projections
A method used to affect and guide others through projected presence and recurring impressions.
- Those who “resonate” with him may remember his words, encounter reminders, or feel corrected through dreams and daily life. 321
- He frames the technique as a means of planting guidance and helping others cultivate rather than simple coercion. 195 321
- Its effectiveness is tied to the recipient’s resonance, understanding, and willingness to cultivate. 321 412
Mystic-Energy Combat
Big Brother is a highly resilient combatant who combines raw Mystic Energy with intimidation, deception, and improvisation.
- Continued fighting after losing his arms and legs during the Sato-clan battle. 250
- Used a palm strike infused with dominance and Mystic Energy to corrode six attacking experts into dust from the head down. 310
- Compresses projected dominance before releasing it explosively. 302
- Secretly coordinates with his clones and uses conversation to recover memories and manipulate opponents’ assumptions. 298
Mind Cultivation and Teaching
Big Brother’s central discipline is cultivation of the heart and mind.
- Teaches students to cultivate stillness, regulate emotion, observe thoughts, and avoid being controlled by habitual cognition. 344 372 389
- Uses Socratic examples and parables to explain abstract ideas such as “circumstances change with the mind.” 197
