While living among inmates, he learned to flatter, conceal his intentions, and persist through feigned weakness. He eventually became the third overseer, then quietly undermined the two officials who had built their power around cronies. 85

He later became proprietor of a tavern, retaining a skilled waiter under a master-servant contract rather than killing him. The contract was stated to make betrayal impossible. 95 After killing Zuobian Shenteng, he was confronted by a Sato clan elder and escaped through the destruction of his physical form. 100

After reforming as a human, Big Brother returned to the Underworld and reunited with King Yama, Uncle Li, and other officials. Uncle Li gave him eight hundred million in Underworld currency, which Big Brother immediately distributed to the eight elderly women who had cared for him in the mortal world. 101 102

His conflict with the Sato clan escalated when he bluffed about connections to the Jade Emperor and Empress Houtu. The bluff failed to secure direct aid, and the ensuing seven-day battle cost him his arms and legs; King Yama opened a retreat route, but Big Brother was left behind. 248 250

During a later period of amnesia, he ran a tavern under the borrowed name “Chan Xin.” Xiao Hu and Xiao Er, who remained devoted to their missing Big Brother, reluctantly allowed him to use the name temporarily. 254 Jin Buque, Old Gouzi, Xue Pan, Lesser Bodhisattva, and Ming Yue eventually recognized him as their long-lost Big Brother. 296
