Background / History

Horus survived his youth as a nameless gang member on the harsh hive world of Khorosnia. He relied on cunning, charm, and a determination to live before gaining both power and the name Horus Lupercal; Tech-Priests subsequently sent him to Terra. 173

On Terra, Horus met the Emperor and spent thirty years learning at his side. Over the following two centuries of the Great Crusade, he developed from an inexperienced youth into a capable Expeditionary Commander and became the first Primarch to return to the Imperium, leading the Sixteenth Legion Lunar Wolves. 19 174

During the Dalinite Nebula campaign, Horus commanded the 63rd Expeditionary Fleet from the Vengeful Spirit. He initially regarded Kasgar Sherlock as a politically elevated recruit commander without military merit, assigning the Third Legion to rear-area defense. 33 34 Kasgar's near-casualtyless victory over the Crystalline Aliens forced Horus to acknowledge his error; Horus publicly criticized his own arrogance and created the Great Learning of the Lunar Wolves, ordering senior officers to study other Legions' strengths. 46 47

Horus developed an increasingly public and fervent devotion to the Emperor. His Legion held activities for warriors to express admiration for the Emperor, while Horus encouraged Lorgar to imitate the Emperor's words and deeds as a means of understanding him. This fervor won him popular admiration but unsettled allies such as Sanguinius and drew criticism from Imperial Truth officials. 123 157

At Geron in the Dragon Star Sector, Horus fought beside the Emperor against the Ork warlords guarding the planet's ion-furnace core. When an Ork warlord seized the Emperor, Horus instinctively unleashed golden psychic techniques that wounded the warlord, then destroyed it and the surrounding Orks. The battle also exposed the Emperor's vulnerability to Horus for the first time. 173 174

Horus competed for the Warmastership at Ullanor, but his rivalry with Philus and his willingness to use allied forces as expendable vanguards undermined his candidacy. Fulgrim was appointed Warmaster instead; Horus was devastated, though the Emperor later gave him a Centaur gold ring. 176 177

During the Heresy, Chaos attempted to remake Horus as its Warmaster. Kasgar found him near death within the Empyrean, surrounded by Thousand Sons who intended to use an ancient ritual to save and corrupt him. 204 Though the Centaur gold ring helped him resist the Four Gods' influence for a time, Chaos later forcibly empowered him; on Istvaan III, he overwhelmed Kasgar before Konrad Curze removed the opposing forces from the battlefield. 205 210

After being purified of Chaos influence, Horus assumed the identity of the slain Sanguinius. For ten thousand years, he acted as the Blood Angels' “mother” and guardian, using Sanguinius's image to soothe the Chapter's Black Rage and guide it through successive crises. 254 255

Appearance

Horus is a nearly four-meter-tall, bald Primarch with a powerful build and an outwardly guileless demeanor. He is most often associated with the Lunar Wolves' pearl-white wargear. 19

Personality

Horus is charismatic, socially adept, and capable of easing disputes that other Primarchs allow to become deadlocks. His arrival at the Gloom Night Sector conference immediately changed its hostile atmosphere, and his blended tactical proposal won unanimous acceptance. 157

He can recognize and correct his own mistakes. After seeing Kasgar's Silent Star campaign, Horus admitted that he had underestimated Kasgar, warned the Lunar Wolves against complacency, and instituted formal study sessions for senior officers. 47

His defining flaw is his obsessive love for the Emperor. Horus repeatedly centers his decisions, speeches, artistic interests, and psychic techniques on the Emperor; this devotion is sincere, but often makes comrades uncomfortable and contributes to his insecurity whenever he feels displaced in the Emperor's favor. 123 157 161

The Emperor's apparent weakness at Geron unsettles Horus deeply. Although he remains determined to protect his father, the realization that the Emperor can be hurt plants doubt beneath Horus's idealized view of him. 174
