Background / History
Magnus arrived on Prospero in an amniotic pod and was raised among Tizca's psychic scholars. With superhuman learning ability and innate psychic power, he helped Prospero's people repel the Soul-Devouring Swarm and transformed the desert world into a center of culture, archives, and psychic study. As Primarch of the Thousand Sons, he led a Legion afflicted by the Flesh Change, whose small numbers generally undertook diplomacy, civilian evacuations, and the preservation of knowledge rather than major Crusade campaigns 106.
When Kasgar and Fulgrim visited Prospero, Magnus warmly received them because Kasgar could reverse the Flesh Change. Kasgar's Psychic Flame restored several afflicted Thousand Sons, including severely mutated victims, winning Magnus's gratitude. However, Magnus rejected Kasgar's request to slow his Warp research, maintaining that exploration of psychic knowledge was his inborn purpose 107 108.
Magnus then attempted to prove his control over psychic power during Tizca's Warp-entity crisis. His excessive use of psychic techniques created or worsened Warp rifts, allowing Soul-Devouring Swarms into the city. Although he helped repel the daemons and later sealed the rifts, the incident deepened Kasgar's distrust of his judgment 109 110 113.
After learning Kasgar also communicated with Warp entities through ritual-like methods, Magnus concluded that the difference between sanctioned faith and forbidden witchcraft was presentation rather than substance. He began researching faith-created Warp spirits and successfully summoned the Spirit of the Imperial Aquila—later exposed as the Tzeentch entity Carlos 113 114 182.
During the Interes negotiations, Magnus followed Fulgrim's fleet without permission and secretly investigated corruption with Ahriman. Guided by the Two-Headed Eagle Spirit, he discovered a Nemesis Blade and received visions of it harming Horus, Fulgrim, and other figures. His suspicions helped expose a Chaos-corrupted Cainblach envoy, but his impulsive intervention destabilized the negotiations 178 179 180.
Magnus reported the Webway to the Emperor and offered assistance repairing it. His uncontrolled psychic outburst breached the Webway and caused a daemonic invasion on Terra, while his reliance on Carlos became public knowledge. The Emperor subsequently convened the Council of Nicaea, where Magnus defended psychic research despite accusations from the Space Wolves and Mortarion 182 183.
After the Edict of Nicaea prohibited Legion psychic research, Magnus returned to Prospero convinced that warnings of its destruction were forged. Manipulated through communications with Kasgar, he conducted a massive sacrificial ritual to contact the Emperor directly. The Emperor intercepted him in the Warp, captured him, and ordered Prospero destroyed; the Burning of Prospero followed 184 185.
Imprisoned beneath the Imperial Palace, Magnus was later freed by Ahriman. He ultimately joined the Lord of Change and led traitorous Thousand Sons alongside Tzeentchian daemons in the Webway War. He rejected the Emperor's offer to return and serve upon the Golden Throne, refusing to abandon his Legion 197 198 199.
In the later era, Magnus fought Vulkan in the Webway, cursed Guilliman into a child's body rather than killing him, and later returned to oppose Kasgar's campaign against Nurgle on Parmenio 199 258 262.
Appearance
Magnus is a crimson-skinned Primarch distinguished by a single eye and an imposing psychic presence. His later Daemon Primarch form can be reshaped at will, though he often retains his familiar red-skinned appearance 106 262.
- Crimson or fiery red skin.
- One eye; his remaining eye is capable of visibly glowing with psychic power 106.
- Wears crimson armor and carries a scepter during the Council of Nicaea 182.
- In his later Daemon Primarch manifestation, wears glittering gemstone rings and bracelets that emit shifting colors 262.
- Can enlarge himself beyond Titan scale through psychic flesh-shaping 109.
Personality
Magnus is intensely curious, scholarly, and convinced that the pursuit of knowledge is inseparable from his identity. He sees psychic research as both his natural calling and the duty given to him by the Emperor, regarding stagnation as more dangerous than experimentation 108.
His brilliance is undermined by recklessness, arrogance, and a persistent refusal to accept warnings. He repeatedly interprets criticism of his methods as proof that he simply needs greater mastery, even after creating Warp rifts, trusting Carlos, and breaching the Webway 109 182 183.
Despite this, Magnus is protective of Prospero and the Thousand Sons. He celebrates the curing of the Flesh Change, fights to defend Tizca, fears the loss of his archives, and refuses the Emperor's offer when it requires abandoning his Legion 107 113 184 199.
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Mastery
Magnus possesses extraordinary psychic talent, capable of using nearly every known human psychic discipline. His power is described as second only to the Emperor's, but his judgment and control frequently fail to match it 110 183.
- Fires psychic missiles, flames, and lightning in sustained volleys against Warp entities 109.
- Uses psychic communication across immense distances and navigates the Warp through meditation 178 184.
- Teleports himself and others, including covert short-range teleportation into the Interes Armory Hall 179.
- Generates psychic shockwaves and other high-output attacks 109.
- Can banish daemons back to the Warp, though he cannot erase them as completely as Kasgar's flame 109.
- His uncontrolled power can tear open Warp rifts and breach the Webway 109 182.
Flesh-Shaping
Magnus can psychically alter living flesh, including his own body.
- Assumes a Heavenly Giant Form larger than a Titan; he previously used it to tear apart an Ork Gargant 109.
- Alters his later Daemon Primarch form into whatever appearance he wishes to present 262.
- His Legion's Flesh Change remains linked to the dangers of heavy psychic practice, despite his attempts to rationalize or control such risks 107 182.
Warp Lore and Divination
Magnus is a dedicated scholar of the Warp, maintaining vast archives and pursuing forbidden knowledge across the galaxy.
- Maintains a private library at the summit of his pyramid in Tizca 107.
- Receives psychic visions, including visions of the Nemesis Blade's future victims 179.
- Communes with Warp entities and conducts summoning rituals 113 114.
- Mistakes Carlos, a Tzeentchian entity, for the Spirit of the Imperial Aquila, demonstrating his vulnerability to manipulation 178 182.
- Uses faith in symbols and legends as a basis for psychic research after Kasgar's advice 114.
Physical Strength
Even without psychic enhancement, Magnus possesses Primarch-level physical power.
- His grip is strong enough that Kasgar cannot break free during their confrontation 109.
- Tears apart the Queen Bee of the Soul-Devouring Swarm with his bare hands after limiting his psychic output to avoid opening additional rifts 113.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Tizca archives — extensive private collection of books and lost knowledge housed atop his pyramid 107.

- Tzeentch — Magnus becomes the Lord of Change's Daemon Primarch and fights as part of the Great Game 198 262.

Tizca Warp Crisis

Nicaea and the Burning of Prospero
