Background / History

Hongjun resided in Zixiao Palace as the Heavenly Dao’s spokesperson. When Gu Xi was born as an Innate Divine Saint, Hongjun attempted to deduce his origins but found the Heavenly Dao had personally concealed Gu Xi’s Heavenly Secrets from him—an unprecedented affront to his authority. 1

As the Dao Ancestor of the Mystic Gate Immortal Path, Hongjun receives Destiny/Fortune from its practitioners. The emergence of Gu Xi’s Martial Way therefore immediately concerned him as a potential rival cultivation system. He initially dismissed it after judging that it could only reach the Heavenly Immortal realm. 41

Hongjun’s hostility intensified as Gu Xi repeatedly created independent paths of cultivation and Dao Proving. He developed killing intent toward Gu Xi, yet Heaven’s Will repeatedly intervened to restrain him. 205 217 244

After Gu Xi’s physical-body path threatened the Mystic Gate’s influence, Hongjun established the Heavenly Court to govern the gods and consolidate the Primordial World’s Destiny/Fortune. He appointed his attendants Haotian and Yaochi as Heavenly Emperor and Empress, respectively. 225 226

Hongjun later attempted to stop Four Seasons Daoist—Gu Xi’s incarnation—from attaining Sainthood, ordering the Six Sages to intercept him when he could not overcome the Eye of Heaven’s Will directly. 245 Following the failed interception, he punished the Six Sages while granting them greater power to preserve his control. 253

When Gu Xi and his allies attacked the Great Dao Shackles, Hongjun repelled them with the Jade Plate of Creation. He subsequently offered to accept Gu Xi as a disciple and make him Deputy Leader of the Mystic Gate, intending to absorb Gu Xi and his forces into his own system; Gu Xi declined. 255

Hongjun’s subsequent attempt to kill Gu Xi and Four Seasons Daoist was obstructed by Chaos Divine Thunder and the Eye of Heaven’s Will, leaving him severely wounded. He then resolved to usurp the Heavenly Dao rather than remain constrained by it. 256 257

Personality

Hongjun is highly possessive of his position as Dao Ancestor. He views new cultivation systems not merely as philosophical developments, but as threats to the Destiny/Fortune that sustains the Mystic Gate Immortal Path. 41 225

He is calculating and controlling, preferring to bind powerful figures to his order rather than leave them independent. He embedded measures within the Primordial Violet Qi fused by the Six Sages, allowing him to control them, and chose Haotian as Heavenly Emperor partly because Haotian was less likely to escape his grasp. 258

Despite his authority, Hongjun is deeply unsettled by Gu Xi. Gu Xi’s favor from Heaven’s Will, creation of new Dao paths, and knowledge of Foreign Domain worlds provoke both resentment and reluctant admiration. 252 281
