Background / History
Xiao Shou was raised at the Dalian City Third Social Welfare Institute after being left at its doorstep as an infant. The institute's elderly residents, caregivers, other children, and its director, Xiao Kaiyuan, gave him a happy childhood. Xiao Kaiyuan named him “Shou,” meaning “to guard,” and charged him with guarding the orphanage and the nation. 2 6 11
During the Kaiju Shanlan's attack on Dalian, the welfare institute lay directly in the monster's path. Xiao Shou helped older children evacuate the elderly and younger residents, but Xiao Kaiyuan died saving him. The disaster devastated the institute and left Xiao Shou traumatized by the memories of that day. 2 5
After the attack, he worked at Grandma He's Noodle House. He helped support the rebuilt institute by delivering leftover noodles and steamed buns to its residents. Though he had once given Li Xintong the chance to be adopted by pretending to be ill, he later explained that he had wanted to remain at the institute with the other children. 2 3
Jin Rong brought him to Dalian Shatterdome when he delivered her birthday meal. His unusually high neural compatibility earned him a chance to become a Jaeger pilot; he accepted only after securing medical care and better meals for the elderly and children at the institute. 5 7
Years later, he learned that he had not been abandoned: he was the lost son of Qin Jianhua and Li Yuhan, who had searched for him for nearly two decades. He reunited with them but retained the surname Xiao in Xiao Kaiyuan's memory and remained at Dalian rather than leaving military service. 76 96 97
Appearance
Xiao Shou is a refined-looking young man of average build. He is not considered conventionally handsome, though his youth and distinctive phoenix eyes leave a strong impression. 2 6
- Rare phoenix eyes, often described as carrying an unusual world-weariness for his age. 2
- 175 cm tall and 65 kg. 6
- Wore the Jaeger Operations Department's black uniform after enlisting. 8
- Became visibly pale and emaciated after his later neural and radiation-related injuries. 178 179
Personality
Xiao Shou is kind, sincere, honest, and initially introverted. Growing up among orphaned children and elderly residents made him deeply protective of vulnerable people; even when offered a prestigious and dangerous position, his first requests concerned doctors and meat for the orphanage. 6 7 16
The death of Xiao Kaiyuan left him depressed, socially withdrawn, and unable to face memories of Shanlan for a time. His confidential evaluation notes mild autism and recommends ongoing psychological treatment, while also recognizing his exceptional aptitude. 5 16
He matures substantially through military service. Though uncomfortable with fame and long-distance travel, he becomes more confident, composed under pressure, and considerate toward younger pilots. 18 53 56 130 His sense of duty remains absolute: he repeatedly chooses to fight despite grief, severe injuries, and his family's pleas for him to leave combat service. 97 145 160 183
Abilities & Skills
Neural Synchrony and Jaeger Piloting
Xiao Shou possesses extraordinary compatibility with Taishan. His neural connection value exceeds 95%, well above the 80% minimum required for reliable Jaeger operation. 5 16
- Initially piloted Taishan alongside Xie Yushan; their shared memories through neural synchrony gave them an unusually intimate tactical understanding. 9
- Overcame the trauma triggered by Shanlan during neural recall, allowing him to regain control in combat. 11 23
- Reached perfect synesthesia in single-pilot mode, achieving “unity of heaven and man” with Taishan. 146 149
- Used solo control to defeat both Thorn Turtle and Wolf Lizard with Taishan's gravity beam and laser sword. 149
- Perfect synesthesia imposed extreme physical and neural strain, worsening his existing injuries and eventually forcing him into rehabilitation. 153 158
Combat Experience
Though initially physically weak and repeatedly defeated while sparring with the Feng siblings, Xiao Shou endured Colonel Lin Huixin's demanding training and developed into a seasoned Jaeger combatant. 26 27 117
- Defeated Category 3 Kaiju Bladehead in Taishan's first battle with Xie Yushan. 12 16
- Practiced against a simulated Shanlan at PPDC headquarters, channeling his trauma into combat focus. 23 24
- Fought through extended neural-synchrony engagements lasting nearly five hours alongside Xie Yushan. 93
- Continued to deploy despite collapsing from exhaustion after defending Weihai from a Category 3 Kaiju. 173
- Trained newer pilots, including the Feng siblings and the Saddan sisters, after his injuries prevented regular front-line service. 158
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Taishan — His primary Jaeger; originally piloted with Xie Yushan and later operated by Xiao Shou alone through perfect synesthesia. 16 149

- Hope — The Ragdoll cat formerly associated with Xie Yushan; Xiao Shou cared for Hope during his recovery. 51 143
Relationships
- Xiao Kaiyuan — Director of the Third Social Welfare Institute and Xiao Shou's closest guardian figure. He named Xiao Shou and died protecting him during Shanlan's attack. 5 11
