Background / History
Z Nation's first Shatterdome was constructed in Dalian specifically to house Jaegers. More than 11,000 elite engineers participated in its construction, backed by over 200 billion in funding; the facility took nearly half a year to complete. Taishan's components were manufactured across the country and overseas before being assembled at the base. 4
The Dalian base initially operated as a highly classified military installation. Its staff exceeded 20,000 personnel, organized into the Command Center, Information Intelligence Analysis Group, Emergency Response Force, Logistics Support Department, Transport Helicopter Squadron, Escort Fighter Wing, and other Jaeger-focused units. 8
Taishan's successful first sortie against Bladehead demonstrated the Jaeger Program's viability and prompted expanded investment. A second Zhonghua Family Shatterdome was planned for Hong Kong, with Mao Shucheng overseeing its establishment. 17 26 The Hong Kong facility was subsequently completed as the headquarters of the Zhonghua Family Jaeger Combat Department. 61 111
Following the attacks on Hong Kong by Bixi and Tengu, the existence and location of the Hong Kong Shatterdome could no longer be kept secret. It was publicly revealed during the military appreciation broadcast, alongside its personnel and Jaeger pilots. 106 111 The Dalian base and Taishan were revealed immediately afterward. 112
After the Kaiju era, Shatterdomes worldwide became obsolete as humanity developed more flexible and mobile weapons. The Dalian Shatterdome remained preserved because it housed Taishan, regarded as humanity's last Jaeger and its final savior. 191
Facilities and Operations
| Function | Details |
|---|---|
| Jaeger assembly | Taishan was assembled at Dalian after its components arrived from factories throughout Z Nation and overseas. 4 |
| Maintenance and refitting | Bases use mechanical arms, engineering teams, replacement components, and diagnostic holograms to repair and upgrade Jaegers. 59 111 |
| Deployment | Heavy-lift helicopters tow Jaegers through numbered coastal hatches; Dalian's Hatch No. 1 opens directly toward the sea. 16 116 |
| Command and intelligence | Suspended command rooms and information-analysis teams monitor Kaiju movements, pilot synchrony, and live battlefield feeds. 100 144 149 |
| Emergency response | Once an alarm sounds, all personnel—including technical staff and gate security—must return to their combat posts immediately. 121 |
| Civilian protection | During the Dalian crisis, most engineers evacuated to underground shelters while a small alert force remained to use the brightly lit base as a delaying target for Kaiju. 145 |

Story Role / Major Arcs
Dalian Shatterdome and Taishan's Debut
The Dalian facility serves as Taishan's assembly site, home base, and first deployment point. It launches Taishan against Bladehead during the Kaiju's attack on Hong Kong, establishing the Jaeger as a national symbol of resistance. 4 12 16
Expansion to Hong Kong
After Bladehead's defeat, the Jaeger Program receives major national support. The Hong Kong Shatterdome is built to extend Zhonghua Family coverage southward and becomes the base of operations for Crimson Typhoon. 17 26 61
Battle for Hong Kong
During the simultaneous Bixi and Tengu assault, Tengu reaches Kowloon Port and threatens the Hong Kong Shatterdome directly. Its fireball attack engulfs the port and reaches the base, forcing Mao Shucheng and Zhu Qian to protect one another amid the blast. 103 105 106
Despite the destruction, the base is restored in time for its public presentation during the military appreciation event. 111
Dalian in Peril
When Crimson Flame Zhu Rong leaves Dalian during a Jaeger rotation, the base is temporarily left without its primary defender. A Kaiju alarm follows almost immediately, forcing Dalian personnel to activate emergency procedures. 144
The base prepares to draw Kaiju attention with its lights while most engineers evacuate underground. Xiao Shou returns against the flow of civilians to reach the Shatterdome and defend Dalian. 145
Taishan's Retirement and Return
After Taishan's later service, no available pilot can maintain the required synchrony value above 80%. The Jaeger is placed in Dalian's underground “Forgotten Graveyard,” alongside damaged and discarded Jaeger parts. 175
Taishan is eventually brought out again for the counteroffensive, launching through the opening roof of the Dalian Shatterdome with overload rocket propulsion boosters. 185
