Background / History
Departure from Konoha and Akatsuki
Orochimaru’s human experiments were discovered in Konoha, but Hiruzen’s reluctance to fight him decisively allowed him to escape. Of the three Sannin who left the village, Orochimaru alone formally defected 3 174.
As an Akatsuki member, he defended Kagami against Kakuzu’s assumption that a child must be weak, although he preferred Itachi as a prospective partner. His interest in Itachi was predatory: he attempted to seize him as a new body capable of supporting eternal life 64 72.
Itachi trapped him in a paralysis genjutsu before the attack could succeed. Orochimaru severed his own left hand to use pain to escape, then fled with assistance from a white-haired subordinate. Pain subsequently announced his betrayal of Akatsuki 72.
Pursuit and the Bargain with Kagami
When Scorpion and Deidara confronted him, Orochimaru used a reanimated Third Kazekage against Scorpion’s puppet of the same man. His confidence collapsed when the Kazekage rejected being called a pawn and freed his soul. Orochimaru escaped Scorpion’s iron sand and Deidara’s bombardment 76 77.
Kagami pursued him privately to obtain Impure World Reincarnation. Orochimaru demanded three favors: noninterference with his pursuit of Itachi and Sasuke, rescue if his life became threatened, and eventual cooperation outside Akatsuki. Their agreement was settled with Kagami retaining his position in the organization 77 78.
Kimimaro and the Konoha Destruction Plan
At Otogakure, Orochimaru assembled Kabuto and the Sound Five as his principal forces. He regarded Kimimaro as a perfect vessel and temporarily prioritized Living Corpse Reincarnation over both reanimation research and the pursuit of the Uchiha brothers 84 85.
Kabuto’s diagnosis of Kimimaro’s terminal hereditary illness ended that plan. Orochimaru instructed Kabuto to continue treatment despite the near-impossibility of a cure, returned to Impure World Reincarnation research, and renewed his interest in Sasuke 87.
Orochimaru and Kagami planned an attack during the Chunin Exams, but their objectives differed: Orochimaru wanted Sasuke, while Kagami wanted Danzō. Neither intended to destroy Konoha unnecessarily. Orochimaru nevertheless accepted Danzō’s offer of substantial benefits for killing Hiruzen, while secretly withholding Kagami’s involvement from him 121 124 137.
With Kimimaro’s help, Orochimaru killed the Fourth Kazekage and assumed his identity. He later infiltrated the Forest of Death as an examinee, placed the Cursed Seal of Heaven on Sasuke, and added a Five Elements Seal to Naruto 125 132 134 135.
The unexpected Nine-Tails rampage prompted the allies to attack ahead of schedule. Orochimaru fought Hiruzen using the reanimated First and Second Hokages and his Kusanagi Sword. Hiruzen died, but his Reaper Death Seal left Orochimaru unable to use ninjutsu. Supported by Kabuto, Orochimaru escaped after deceiving Jiraiya into abandoning pursuit to search for his teacher 137 143 144 145 149 150.
Sasuke’s Recruitment and Training
Seeking treatment for his arms, Orochimaru planned to exploit Tsunade’s grief by offering Impure World Reincarnation involving her deceased lover, Dan Katō. He also used a clone to approach Sasuke in Konoha Hospital, promising power and answers about Itachi and Kagato 163 175.
Sasuke’s delayed arrival forced Orochimaru to take another body first. Although frustrated by the resulting cooldown, he continued preparing Sasuke as his next vessel. He later admitted that his promised explanation of the Uchiha massacre had been a recruitment lie; Sasuke nevertheless agreed to surrender his body in two years in exchange for revenge 200 203 204.
Orochimaru increasingly feared that Sasuke might become another Kagato and turn against him. He restricted Sasuke’s instruction for six months, but eventually took him to Ryūchi Cave in hopes that his future vessel would acquire Sage Mode. After using Sasuke to test Kagato’s strength, he carried the badly injured Sasuke away for urgent treatment 241 249 250 251.
Parallel-World Storyline
In the parallel world introduced after Kagami’s historical journey, Orochimaru investigated a legend about an ancient Uchiha who invented Impure World Reincarnation. Kabuto supplied the stolen records, and Orochimaru used his connections—including work for Danzō—to locate the likely burial region between Konoha and Sunagakure 280 281.
He searched the desert with burrowing snakes rather than chakra sensing, but eventually dismissed the legend as false and returned to preparing the Konoha Destruction Plan. The coffin actually contained Kagami’s reanimated body; Kabuto found it independently five years later 280 281.
This world’s subsequent history includes Sasuke killing Orochimaru. Following his revival, Orochimaru sought the method by which Itachi had broken free of an Impure World Reincarnation summoning contract. He offered to create a reanimated army in exchange, but Itachi refused 281 300.
Appearance
Orochimaru is described with pale cheeks and purple eyeshadow, wearing white clothing secured by a hemp rope during his desert expedition. His appearance changes with body transfers and stolen disguises 132 200 280.
- Replacement body: Appears to be a young man of about twenty, with most of his body and face wrapped in white bandages immediately after reincarnation 200.
- Sealed hands: His hands turn purple after Hiruzen’s final attack 144.
- Disguises: Adopts both the Fourth Kazekage’s appearance and an examinee’s face and voice 125 132.
Personality
Orochimaru pursues immortality and knowledge of every ninjutsu. His curiosity is not always practical: the search for the ancient Uchiha’s coffin interests him even without a definite use for the discovery 201 281.
He treats alliances as exchanges of value. He abandons Danzō when their cooperation ceases to benefit him, bargains with Kagami’s desire for resurrection, and lies to Sasuke to secure a future vessel. His confidence in treating others as tools also exposes weaknesses, most clearly when his “pawn” remark provokes the Third Kazekage into escaping his control 77 137 203.
His rationality tempers his anger. He does not dismiss Kagami because of his age, and even while furious over Sasuke’s delay, he suppresses his killing intent rather than lashing out at Kabuto. His experiences with Itachi and Kagato nevertheless make him increasingly anxious about Sasuke’s growth 64 196 200 241.
Abilities & Skills
Impure World Reincarnation
- Reanimates dead shinobi whose bodies regenerate after destructive attacks and possess effectively unlimited chakra 76 77.
- Uses implanted talismans to suppress personality and control subjects 76.
- Incomplete suppression permits self-release; thorough suppression reduces the subject’s strength 76 77 144.
- The technique does not automatically end if its caster dies. Sealing or immobilization can restrain its subjects 78.
- Offers reanimated soldiers as bargaining leverage when seeking Itachi’s contract-breaking method 300.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
- Transfers himself into a replacement body to prolong his life 200 201.
- Requires approximately two to three years between transfers; unsuitable bodies eventually begin rejecting him 196 200 249.
- Causes soul damage that prevents him from learning Sage Mode himself 249.
- Plans to circumvent that limitation by having Sasuke learn Sage Mode before taking his body; the plan’s success is not established 249.
Biological Research and Transplantation
- Specializes in cell transplantation and immortality research rather than direct combat or rapid mastery of new ninjutsu 97 196 202.
- Conducts extensive Hashirama Cell experiments involving numerous infant deaths. Yamato is the resulting success, but Orochimaru is unaware of his existence 201.
- Abandons that research after Danzō’s death and the success of Living Corpse Reincarnation, then supplies stored cells to Kagami 201 202.
Snake Techniques
- Produces snakes from his sleeve to bind a target 72.
- Transforms his legs into snakes to evade Scorpion’s attack 77.
