Background and History
The Donquixote Family originally ruled Dressrosa. Eight hundred years before its return to the kingdom, it abandoned Dressrosa for the Holy Land Mary Geoise and Celestial Dragon status; the Riku family subsequently took the throne. Doflamingo's branch later relinquished that status, while his cousin Saint Mjosgard remained a Celestial Dragon 187 153.
Under Doflamingo, the pirate family dominated most of the North Blue underworld. Arms trading supplied its principal income, with pirates, kingdoms, and World Government member nations among its customers. The family also sold unwanted Devil Fruits on the black market, then attempted to ambush buyers who had not yet eaten them and steal the fruits back 101 81.
Major Arcs
Attacks in the North Blue
- Void Organization ultimatum: A metal tablet demanded five Devil Fruits and the person responsible for attacking the organization's outer members. An ensuing explosive attack at Spider Miltz killed executives Jola and Gladius and severely injured five others. Robin's control of Lao G then spread suspicion among the survivors 79 81 82.
- Disrupted arms trade: Yaen's Marine expedition drove North Blue pirates into hiding and sharply reduced demand for weapons. Doflamingo had Diamante arm pirate crews to provoke renewed conflict, but Yaen defeated Diamante and the pirate alliance 101 105 108.
- Fall of Doflamingo: After Corazon seized the Op-Op Fruit for Law, Doflamingo confronted him on Minion Island. Yaen intervened and killed Doflamingo; the remaining executives fled. Vice Admiral Tsuru subsequently pursued them through the North Blue 116 117 123 135.
The New Donquixote Family
Corazon rescued the fleeing ship from Tsuru's trap, then declared his intention to create a new Donquixote Family. Vergo challenged him and was killed; the other executives pledged allegiance. Corazon became captain, altered the ship's flamingo-like appearance to resemble a mantis, and led the crew toward the Grand Line 135 136.
At Dressrosa, Corazon sought to restore Donquixote rule without repeating the family's earlier tyranny. He proposed a constitutional monarchy, and King Riku acknowledged the Donquixotes as the royal family while accepting the office of prime minister. The World Government subsequently considered recognizing their rule and offering Corazon a Shichibukai position 187 188 189.
- New World underworld: The family expanded its influence until it became a significant force in the New World's underground market 229.
- War at Dressrosa: Corazon evacuated civilians into underground tunnels before the Beast Pirates' invasion. Donquixote and Dressrosa forces fought defensively while awaiting reinforcements; when Kaido arrived, Corazon ordered them away from the port battlefield 232 233 242.
- Later rule: Seven years after Corazon's arrival, Dressrosa had grown substantially wealthier through trade and tourism. The Tontatta Tribe joined the kingdom despite an eight-hundred-year enmity toward the Donquixotes 469.
