Background

Early life and adoption

Yaen transmigrated into the world with a body so frail that, after drifting at sea for three days, he was found unconscious and feverish by Sengoku. Sengoku saved, raised, and educated him for more than a decade, becoming his adoptive father. Yaen considers that debt of gratitude impossible to repay. 10

His physique remains a defining weakness: insufficient bone hardness, an underdeveloped digestive system, and poor durability compared with the world’s strongest fighters. Although he trained intensely to compensate, he cannot rely on the physical resilience expected of high-level combatants. 2 102 557

Marine adviser and enlistment

Before formally joining the Marines, Yaen secretly supplied Sengoku with strategies and helped overhaul Marine selection, promotion, and merit-reward systems. His work strengthened Sengoku’s qualifications for eventual leadership of the Marines. 1 5

Yaen initially resisted enlistment, preferring a safe, low-ranking life and claiming that he needed a powerful wife to protect him. Sengoku nevertheless maneuvered him into joining through the Special Combat Power Recruitment Mechanism. Yaen refused an improper major promotion and entered as a Private First Class instead, citing the importance of preserving Marine rules and morale. 2 6 8

Revolutionary activities

Yaen opposed the World Government’s atrocities while remaining unwilling to become a pirate because of Sengoku. During the Ohara Buster Call, he warned Dragon that Nico Robin was the sole surviving archaeologist and ordered her protection. 10 16

He later revealed that he and Monkey D. Dragon founded the Revolutionary Army. Yaen uses the Marines, Revolutionary Army, and Void Organization as separate channels through which he can influence the world while protecting those close to him. 256 630

Appearance

Yaen is usually presented as a refined, gentle-looking man wearing glasses. His slim build and visibly poor physical constitution contrast sharply with his destructive combat power.
