Background
Jiang Liuer was created through Ji Zhao’s trial in the Ten Thousand Feet of Red Dust, intended to make him Tang Sanzang and send him west to obtain the true scriptures. Though identified with Golden Cicada, he is explicitly distinct from the Tang Sanzang of the original Journey to the West world. Only Sect Master Tongtian and Demon Ancestor Luohu know this secret. 496 616
Five hundred years after Sun Wukong’s suppression, Jiang Liuer arrived at Five Finger Mountain on a white horse and met Sect Master Tongtian, who was posing as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. At the time, Tongtian considered him a cultivationless mortal, yet soon discovered that he was unharmed by magical attacks. 496 498
Jiang Liuer undertook the Journey to the West as the party’s master, with Tongtian acting publicly as his eldest disciple, Sun Wukong. His journey diverged sharply from conventional expectations: he killed and ate demons, wore the Brocade Kasaya ostentatiously, and repeatedly displayed overwhelming hidden power. 499 506 507
His experiences as Golden Cicada left him deeply hostile toward Amitabha Buddha and Spirit Mountain. Golden Cicada’s body had been used as food by Amitabha Buddha and Juliusun for longevity and cultivation, leaving Jiang Liuer with no attachment to the Western Teachings despite his nominal affiliation. 616 617
Appearance
Jiang Liuer is a bald, nearly two-meter-tall monk whose appearance is repeatedly described as exceptionally handsome and intensely charismatic. His shaved head gives him a carefree, uninhibited presence rather than diminishing his appeal. 496 499
- Wears a monk’s robe and, on formal occasions, the radiant Brocade Kasaya. 507
- Carries a Nine-Ringed Monk’s Staff. 522
- His appearance attracts women, demons, attendants, and even powerful cultivators. 496 500 570
- His transformed form is a colossal golden Buddha clad in the Brocade Kasaya. 531 618
Personality
Jiang Liuer is carefree, lazy, gluttonous, and openly irreverent toward the conventional image of a monk. He sleeps whenever possible, drinks wine, eats meat, and has no qualms about killing demons when necessary. 503 509 615
He is also smug, theatrical, and fond of showing off. He adopts a solemn Buddhist demeanor when it suits him, then casually undermines it through flirtation, laziness, or blunt remarks. 497 500 506 568
Beneath this unserious exterior, Jiang Liuer is composed in mortal danger and possesses unusual insight. He recognizes predestination in the events at Wuzhuang Temple, senses dangerous presences through intuition, and warns Tongtian that a greater calamity may threaten both the Primordial World and Primordial Tribulation Realm. 525 623 625
