Background / History
On Kunlun Mountain, Laozi noticed Luo Xuan after the Innate Human refined elixirs and drew down Heavenly Merit. As a cultivator deeply invested in the Pill Dao, Laozi recognized Luo Xuan's instinctive talent and considered accepting him after testing his character. 2
When Jieyin and Zhunti attempted to recruit Luo Xuan to the West, Laozi arrived with Yuanshi and Tongtian, drove the two sages away, and formally accepted Luo Xuan as his disciple. He gave Luo Xuan the Purple Gold Gourd and an emergency jade slip that would summon him in a life-or-death crisis. 10 11
Laozi upheld that promise when Kunpeng abducted Luo Xuan. He wounded Kunpeng with the White Jade Flat Crutch, shielded Luo Xuan with the Heaven and Earth Profound Yellow Exquisite Pagoda, and personally brought him to Kunlun once the thousand-year agreement elapsed. At Taiqing Palace, Laozi began teaching him the Grand Pure Dao Method. 26 27
Luo Xuan's idea of preaching to others gave Laozi an epiphany. Laozi subsequently went to Shouyang Mountain to impart cultivation methods to the Human Race, completed his Dao, and attained sainthood. There he also recognized Xuan Du's resonance with his Dao and later accepted the child as a disciple. 28 29 30
After conflicts between Yuanshi's and Tongtian's disciples exposed the growing divide among the Three Pure Ones, Laozi accepted Luo Xuan's advice to leave Kunlun. He established Eight Sceneries Palace near Shouyang Mountain, where the Human Race welcomed the Renjiao Sect's leader. 58 59
Laozi later accompanied Luo Xuan into the Outer Chaos, initially warning him that Chaos Fierce Beast corpses could not be refined into useful pills. He ultimately supported Luo Xuan's experiments and observed his disciple surpass him in the Pill Dao. 63 65 73
Appearance
Laozi is portrayed as an elderly Daoist with white hair and a white beard. His attire varies between appearances, including green robes during his confrontation with Kunpeng and white Daoist robes during Luo Xuan's tribulation. 2 25 44

Personality
Laozi is an exacting but appreciative Pill Dao practitioner. He recognizes unusual talent regardless of origin, repeatedly praises Luo Xuan's ability, and is willing to admit when his own elixir formula or methods are flawed. 2 31 58
He is intensely protective of his disciples. He arrived before Luo Xuan could activate his emergency token during Kunpeng's attack, blocked the Ironclad Lightning of Luo Xuan's tribulation despite suffering Heavenly Dao backlash, and remained concerned whenever Luo Xuan undertook dangerous cultivation. 25 26 44 121
Although he often projects serenity, Laozi takes visible pride in Luo Xuan's accomplishments and can be possessive of his disciple's talent when Yuanshi and Tongtian show interest. He also displays the capacity for self-reflection, acknowledging that his attempts to mediate the conflict between his brothers had been misguided. 9 58 82
