Background / History

Hongjun appointed Haotian Heavenly Emperor and Yaochi Queen Mother at Purple Firmament Palace, disregarding the candidates recommended by the Three Pure Ones. His appointment placed him in direct political contrast with Xian Junyu, who had also been considered for the throne. 23 56

As the Heavenly Court lacked capable personnel, Haotian sent his special envoy Taibai Jinxing to invite the Saints to a Peach Banquet. He accepted Xian Junyu's offer to help staff the court, allowing Jie Sect disciples to enter its administration; Xian Junyu became Thunder God Puhua Heavenly Venerate, then its highest-ranking official beneath Haotian before the Six Imperials were established. 45 56 59

Pressure from Yuanshi and the increasingly uncontrollable sect disciples forced Haotian and Yaochi to seek counterweights among the Saints. To restrain Yuanshi, Haotian offered Xian Junyu an imperial position and later enfeoffed him as Emperor Gouchen Shanggong Tianhuang. 60 62 71

The Saints' intervention in the Heavenly Court's offices left Haotian feeling that his title was largely ceremonial. After the Six Saints effectively established the Four Imperial Lords, he privately compared himself to a puppet and resolved to seek a way to strengthen his own authority. 80

Haotian later tried to use his daughter Longji's affinity with Xian Junyu to build closer ties with the Gouchen Emperor. He also sought Xian Junyu's help after suspecting that external forces—possibly the Two Saints of the West—had manipulated his sister Yao Ji into descending to the mortal world. 174 211

When Xian Junyu publicly reached the Saint Realm, Haotian saw the Intercepting Sect's two Saints as potential pillars for the Heavenly Court. He personally visited Penglai to request the secret of achieving sainthood, openly offering Heavenly Court resources in exchange, but acknowledged that nothing he possessed was of equivalent value. 244 262 263

After being warned that Yang Jian could become a threat, Haotian deployed his ten sons and a large Heavenly Court force against Yang Jian and Yang Chan. The operation resulted in Yao Ji's death and the deaths of nine of Haotian's sons; Xian Junyu prevented Yang Jian from killing the tenth. 287 288

During Demon Realm incursions, Haotian initially cited the Heavenly Court's manpower shortage. He ultimately ordered Taibai Jinxing to deploy the Celestial River Navy and Thunder Department troops to seal Demon Realm passages throughout the Heavenly Realm. 363

Haotian is politically flexible and attentive to appearances. He uses banquets, return gifts, appointments, and alliances to cultivate support, particularly when dealing with Saints and their disciples. 54 57 62

His authority is constrained by stronger powers, especially the Saints. This insecurity makes him willing to compromise, such as creating imperial positions to divide pressure among rival factions. 60 62 80

He can be notably direct when pursuing a goal. Unlike other cultivators seeking Xian Junyu's method of becoming a Saint, Haotian openly stated both his willingness to help and his desire to obtain the secret. 262

Haotian is deeply protective of his family, especially Yao Ji, but his concern can become ruthless. While distressed by his sister's situation, he immediately destroyed a long-serving Heavenly Slave for offending Xian Junyu. 211
