Background
Titan's collapse convinced Thanos that unchecked population growth and finite resources inevitably lead civilizations to ruin. He resolved to impose “balance” on the universe by randomly eliminating half of all life, regarding the resulting deaths as the price of salvation 3 93 190.
While walking through Titan's ruins after its destruction, Thanos discovered the infant Beckett, a Saiyan survivor who had arrived in an escape pod. Though Ebony Maw confirmed that the child was not a Titan, Thanos formally adopted him before the Black Order and interpreted their meeting as fate's endorsement of his mission 1 2.
Thanos raised Beckett within Sanctuary and the Dark Order. He strengthened the child's body with Nutrient Fluid, trained him through repeated combat, and deliberately exposed him to the Black Order's varied fighting styles. He also prepared Beckett to control his Great Ape transformation rather than be consumed by its power 2 4 7.
Appearance
Thanos is a purple-skinned Eternal Titan with a heavily lined face and a distinctive chin. He is most often depicted in golden armor and helmet, carrying a great blade or wearing the Infinity Gauntlet 133 169 447.
- Purple skin and deeply wrinkled facial features.
- Usually wears gold armor, boots, and helmet.
- Carries a large bladed weapon in battle.
- Uses a golden Infinity Gauntlet once he begins gathering the Stones.
Personality
Thanos is calm, calculating, and unwavering in his conviction that he alone must correct the universe's resource imbalance. He does not view himself as needlessly cruel; he believes mass death is a painful necessity for a better future, and imagines retiring as a farmer once his work is complete 3 190.
He is exceptionally patient when pursuing long-term goals. Rather than prematurely assaulting holders of the Space and Time Stones, he waits for a decisive advantage, studies his enemies, and exploits information from alternate timelines to accelerate his plans 217 345 447.
Despite his ruthlessness, Thanos has genuine paternal attachment to Beckett. He invests heavily in Beckett's training, disciplines him for arrogance, believes in his potential above every other member of the Dark Order, and repeatedly names him as his successor 136 183 241 391. His final recorded message confirms that he wanted Beckett to inherit his ideals, power, and influence after the end of Thanos's era 458.
