Tesoro was a major figure in the underworld economy, controlling underground casinos alongside figures such as Stussy, the Vinsmoke Family, and Joker. His Tesoro Entertainment City became a hub where pirates and nobles of the New World spent vast amounts of wealth. 187 134

He had previously suffered the loss of a loved one to slavery, after she was bought by a Celestial Dragon. The experience left him deeply hostile toward Celestial Dragons, though that hostility later gave way to misplaced confidence when Saint Mjosgard politely apologized to him. 373 133

World Gambling Tournament

Tesoro arrived at Sabaody for the World Gambling Tournament aboard a luxurious golden ship, intending to have representatives from Tesoro Entertainment City claim the championships in dice, cards, and mahjong. He dismissed Iceburg's event as amateurish and believed his wealth placed him above even the Celestial Dragons. 132

At the pier, Tesoro scattered gold dust and later Beli notes to provoke a frenzy among the crowd. When tournament staff informed him that Gold-Gold Fruit users could not use gold as gambling capital, he responded by displaying his stored cash instead. Defeat at Sabaody

Saint Rosward damaged Tesoro's golden ship after Tesoro spoke to him disrespectfully. Tesoro prepared to retaliate, but Rayleigh intervened on Gawain's behalf and defeated him in a single exchange with Styx, sending him into the sea. 135

Tesoro's crew recovered him, but his ship was confiscated and salvaged. Unable to access the Fish-Man Five Islands' coating facilities after Gawain's faction took control there, he was left circling nearby waters in a small boat. 135 136 137
