Background / History

Asgardian succession and the Jotunheim war

Loki initially takes satisfaction in Thor’s exile to Midgard, but Odin’s warning about threats on Earth leaves him concerned for his brother. He watches Thor’s struggle from afar, restraining himself from intervening while assessing Duva, the Xenomorphs, and the Eternals. 35 39

While investigating the conflict around Mjolnir, Loki duels Kaecilius. Though Kaecilius is more skilled with weapons, Loki’s Frost Giant body allows him to overpower the mortal sorcerer physically; their clash escalates into a contest of magic. 40 41

Following Odin’s apparent death, Loki ascends the Asgardian throne. He publicly frames Thor’s continued stay on Earth as protection, even as he attempts to secure his own position and keep his brother away from the Frost Giant war. 50 51

Laufey exposes Loki’s Frost Giant heritage during the Jotunheim campaign. Duva defends Loki by arguing that Odin knowingly accepted him, but Loki’s identity still causes panic among the Asgardians and deepens his resentment toward Thor’s accepted status. 75

Loki activates the Casket of Ancient Winters, freezing much of Jotunheim—including Asgardians, Frost Giants, and Xenomorphs—to create an opening against Laufey. He then uses a convincing illusion to trick Laufey and wounds him with Gungnir, but the attack fails to kill the Skyfather. 76

After Laufey’s defeat, Loki rejects the throne and chooses to leave both Asgard and the World Tree. He decides to seek a life defined by his own ambitions rather than by his rivalry with Thor or his pursuit of Asgard’s crown. 77

Symbiote campaign

On Earth, Loki infiltrates S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities, steals Symbiote material, and releases the imprisoned Black Dragon in hopes of building his own force of mass-produced soldiers. 81

He becomes entangled with Knull after Grendel swallows him and Knull opens a spatial channel for his escape. Though Loki gains power from the Symbiotes, Knull’s consciousness and superior control leave him effectively compelled to cooperate. 83 95

Loki helps direct the Symbiote invasion of Earth and attempts to seize the Celestial for Knull. When Duva’s Xenomorphs intervene, Loki avoids joining the battle directly out of fear of capture. 98

He is later confronted by Jane Foster and the Laufey Xenomorph. The Casket of Ancient Winters proves ineffective against the Frost Giant-derived Xenomorph, whose bloodline resists Loki’s strongest ice-based artifact. 99

Birth of the God of Stories

Prime Universe Loki escapes the Underworld as an incomplete fusion of several incarnations of himself. Faced with Duva’s conquest of the Prime Universe, he concludes that ordinary magic and Godly Power cannot provide a path beyond Duva’s reach. 286 288

He binds himself to countless timelines, gathers other Loki variants, and forcibly extracts their lies and experiences. By redefining lies as the origin of stories, he becomes the God of Stories rather than the ruler of a single universe’s timelines. 288

Duva recognizes Loki’s usefulness but treats him as an imperfect tool. He invades Loki’s conceptual authority, promises to restore Asgard if Loki cooperates, and sends him into a wider multiversal conflict. 289

Loki absorbs stories from the DC world during the Marvel–DC convergence, allowing him to approach completion as a Multiversal God. Duva then uses him as the core mechanism for the collision of the Prime Universes. 302 313 314

When Loki learns that he has been merging two Omniverses rather than two ordinary Multiverses, he realizes the scale of Duva’s deception and becomes overwhelmed by the burden placed on him. 318

Personality

Loki is proud, calculating, and deeply sensitive to perceived humiliation—especially when others praise Thor at his expense. He presents confidence and charm even in dangerous situations, but his self-image is tied closely to proving that he is superior to his brother and worthy of power. 39 40 71

His affection for Thor is genuine but contradictory. Loki is repeatedly tempted to protect Thor, yet he also manipulates Thor’s circumstances and fears being forever compared unfavorably to him. His decision to abandon Asgard comes from recognizing that the throne cannot resolve this insecurity. 39 50 76 77

As king, Loki becomes increasingly ruthless. He is willing to freeze allies and enemies alike with the Casket of Ancient Winters, viewing most of those around him as expendable once he believes their acceptance is unattainable. 76

The Prime Universe incarnation is more openly desperate and cruel. He treats other Loki variants as material for his own ascension, but his later anger toward Duva stems from recognizing that even his godhood was shaped for someone else’s plan. 288 289 318
