Background / History

Bolivar Doctor developed the Sentinel Robots as an anti-mutant weapon after research based on Mystique's transformation gene. Their defining system allows a copied mutant ability to be uploaded into a database for other units to access, letting them select powers suited to particular targets. Bolivar frames mutants as an enemy capable of uniting humanity, beginning with Su Yao, whom he considers a public-safety threat. 69

Before mass deployment, the project lacked sufficient mutant genetic data. Bolivar created a Small Robot with the Sentinel intelligence system's targeting capability to collect genetic information; its targeting system could locate mutants within ten kilometers. 70

The government publicly unveils nearly one hundred Sentinels through a live broadcast. During the demonstration, one copies a robber's rock transformation after catching his fist, overpowers him with superior strength, and restrains him with a Mutant Controller. The force then surrounds Su Yao, establishing the Sentinels as the government's primary anti-mutant weapon. 71

Although Su Yao destroys early deployments, the program persists through rebuilding, mass production, and upgrades. Sentinels later participate effectively in the Battle of New York against the Chitauri, revealing that their threat extends beyond mutant hunting. 150 181

Ultron subsequently steals Sentinel blueprints, database data, and manufacturing information. He transfers his program into a Sentinel Robot, produces improved units at a faster rate than the military, and uses them to pursue Su Yao and the Infinity Stones. 281 282 292

In a future world, Sentinel Robots overrun humanity and hunt mutants on a massive scale. Their command force includes an intelligent Mother Sentinel, but Su Yao destroys it and its remaining army with Sunshine Pervades. 402 403 404

A separate Sentinel threat arrives from a Branch Universe under Bastion. Bastion claims his army has already eliminated every mutant in its own world and begins an invasion of the Main Universe, deploying Prime and Nimrod Class Sentinels. Su Yao ultimately destroys more than a million Sentinels across both universes and eradicates Bastion himself. 439 440 444 445

The government unveils the Sentinels as a public answer to failed attempts to capture Su Yao. Their first operation surrounds him with nearly one hundred units, while their ability-copying demonstration persuades much of the public that mutants can be controlled. 71

Messiah City and Copied Powers

At Messiah City, Sentinels overwhelm the Twelve Disciples by turning copied powers against them, including sealing Crystal Man in crystal created by his own ability. They later copy Black Particle and Space Teleportation from Su Yao, but fail to copy Sunshine Pervades before being reduced to ash. 109 113

Rebuilding and Escalation

Despite previous losses, Sentinels return to hunt mutants in cities. Su Yao responds by flying across the city and destroying units as they appear, eventually forcing government departments to halt deployment there. 148 150

Battle of New York

More than one hundred Sentinels join the defense against the Chitauri army. Their lasers, metallic forms, crystal control, and copied powers inflict major losses and ease pressure on the Avengers. 181

Bastion crosses from a Branch Universe with an army of Prime and Nimrod Class Sentinels, announces humanity's takeover, and orders the extermination of all mutants. His army initially creates global despair, but Su Yao annihilates more than a million units across both sides of the dimensional passage. 439 440 444
