Background / History

Loki was born the undersized son of Laufey, king of the Frost Giants. Abandoned in a Jotunheim temple after war, he was found and taken by Odin. Odin initially intended Loki to become Jotunheim’s king and establish lasting peace with Asgard through Thor and Loki’s future rule; Odin later states that he truly came to regard Loki as his son. 93

Loki discovers his Frost Giant heritage after the Casket of Ancient Winters turns his skin blue. Odin confirms that he is Laufey’s son, but Loki interprets his adoption as being kept as a political tool and resents Odin’s perceived favoritism toward Thor. Odin falls into the Odin Sleep before resolving the confrontation. 93

During Odin’s sleep, Loki sends the Destroyer Armor to Midgard with orders to prevent Thor’s return and annihilate all opposition. He later allows Laufey into Asgard under the pretense of assassinating Odin, only to betray and kill Laufey himself with the Eternal Spear. Loki then activates the Rainbow Bridge against Jotunheim, intending to destroy the Frost Giants and prove himself worthy to Odin. 95 98

Thor stops the destruction of Jotunheim by destroying the Rainbow Bridge. Loki uses illusions during their fight and falls into a cosmic abyss after the conflict. 99

Personality

Loki’s early actions are driven by envy, insecurity, and a desperate need for Odin’s recognition. He sees Thor as the favored heir and believes that their relationship has denied him a fair chance to prove himself. 93 99 165

He is calculating and highly deceptive, readily betraying allies such as Laufey, manipulating Thor with illusions, and controlling others through the Mind Scepter. He also treats humans with open contempt, comparing them to ants beneath a shoe while pursuing dominion over Earth. 98 99 160

Despite his arrogance, Loki is not fearless. The Chitauri Commander’s threats unsettle him, and the arrival of unknown Midgardian sorcerers makes him cautious because their master appears able to predict events. 161 162 184

After witnessing memories of his future sacrifice, Loki’s jealousy and arrogance lessen. He accepts the responsibility of protecting the Timelines, even after learning that his future self would choose an isolated existence for that duty. 648

Abilities & Skills

Frost Giant and Asgardian Physiology

Loki possesses the durability and physical strength of an Asgardian royal and Frost Giant.

  • Contact with the Casket of Ancient Winters reveals his blue-skinned Frost Giant form. 93
  • He is unaffected by Frost Giant cold and retains extraordinary resilience against conventional human weapons. 93 101
  • He can withstand severe blunt-force attacks, including being smashed by Hulk, and recover afterward. 101
  • His physical strength allows him to overpower Captain America in close combat. 163

Illusion Magic

Loki uses illusions to deceive, evade, and create openings in combat.

  • He creates false bodies of himself while fighting Thor on the Rainbow Bridge. 99
  • He leaves an illusory double near Thor’s containment cell, allowing his true body to appear behind Coulson. 174
  • His illusion magic makes Thor uncertain whether Loki is physically present or has already escaped. 347

Mind Scepter

The Mind Scepter is Loki’s principal weapon during the Chitauri campaign.

  • Fires white-blue energy blasts capable of injuring or killing S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. 160 163
  • The gem within the scepter can control targets’ minds, as demonstrated on Hawkeye and other agents. 160
  • Controlled victims remain mentally aware, though they become loyal and obedient to Loki. 161
  • Strong-willed victims may potentially recover if compelled to act against their own will. 160

Command of Asgardian Artifacts

Loki has used royal Asgardian weapons and defenses to advance his schemes.

  • He uses the Eternal Spear to release and command the Destroyer Armor. 95
  • The Eternal Spear activates the Rainbow Bridge and is used to kill Laufey. 98
  • He uses the Rainbow Bridge’s destructive energy in an attempt to eradicate Jotunheim. 98

Authority Over Timelines

After accepting Su Yao’s offer, Loki becomes the God of Time.

  • He receives the power of countless Timelines, each comparable to a parallel universe. 648
  • His new power is sufficient to erase Timelines, making unrestricted use potentially dangerous. 648
  • The Time Guardians System supervises his actions and can temporarily restrict his power if he destroys too many Timelines without cause. 648
  • Proper management of the Timelines allows the system to help him gradually increase his power. 648
