Background / History

Professor X detects an immense X-Energy source comparable to Jean Grey's while using the Brainwave Room. Believing the unidentified child may be an Omega-level mutant, he urgently sends Cyclops to search for and guide the child before an uncontrolled outburst causes irreversible disaster. He later explains that an Omega mutant is not merely a Level 5 mutant, but an “infinite” level whose power cannot be conventionally assessed. 2 46

After footage of Su Yao's abilities becomes public, Professor X recognizes the youth's potential and considers recruiting him into X-Academy. His urgency increases because Magneto is also searching for the suspected Omega mutant, and Professor X fears the consequences if such power is controlled by the Brotherhood. 16 28

He eventually connects the Omega-energy signature he sensed to Su Yao after witnessing the latter's battle with Black Phoenix Jean. Even after Su Yao's destructive displays, Professor X's response remains divided between amazement and fear that the young mutant may lose control. 74 75 118

When S.H.I.E.L.D. asks him to locate Apocalypse, Professor X uses the Brainwave Amplification Room to find the ancient mutant in Cairo. Apocalypse senses the search in return, teleports to X-Mansion, abducts Professor X, and intends to claim his Mind Power through a body-transfer ritual. Apocalypse instead uses him as a conduit for a worldwide threat, temporarily amplifying his telepathy beyond its normal limits. 134 135 136

Professor X later meets Messiah directly at X-Academy. His attempt to probe Messiah's mind is blocked, and he concludes that Messiah's Mind Power is at least equal to his own and that the youth contains energy even more frightening than Jean's. 233

In a Sentinel-dominated future, he witnesses Messiah destroy the Sentinel Robot Mother and its remaining forces. A Venom sub-body left with the X-Men subsequently repairs Professor X's spinal injury, allowing him to walk again. 404 405

In later events, Messiah returns to enhance him further, creating a portable Brainwave Amplifier and extending his lifespan. Professor X later reveals that Messiah is his and Magneto's son, a revelation that leaves both men stunned. 627 630 632

Personality

Professor X believes mutants and humans can coexist peacefully, placing him in ideological opposition to Magneto's belief in mutant superiority and the elimination of hostile humans. Despite their conflict, the two retain trust and can still speak as friends. 14

He is protective of young and vulnerable mutants, repeatedly seeking to find, recruit, or rescue them before governments, laboratories, or hostile factions can exploit them. His concern over Omega mutants is sincere but tempered by fear of the destruction they could cause if they lose control. 2 118 499

His ethics are not absolute. He attempts to inspect Messiah's mind during their first meeting, and later uses telepathy to control nearby soldiers while speaking with Magneto. 233 632
