Background

Origin and birth

Nezha originated from the remaining soul fragment of Shennong’s daughter, who had been killed by Ao Bing. Nuwa preserved and nurtured the fragment in Wa Huang Heaven, eventually forming it into a Spirit Pearl and sending it into reincarnation during the Investiture of the Gods tribulation. 579

Because the soul was initially incomplete, Lady Yin carried the child for three years and six months. Nezha was born as a radiant orb before emerging as a little girl. 579 582

True Person Taiyi arrived at Li Jing’s residence intending to accept her as a disciple. Despite Nezha immediately kicking him and treating him with open hostility, he accepted her and named her Nezha after Li Jing’s older sons, Jinzha and Muzha. 582

Adoption into the Shang royal household

Nezha accompanied Li Jing and Lady Yin to Chaoge, where she met King Zi Shou and Queen Jiang Yun. She introduced herself as “this young master,” prompting Jiang Yun’s amusement. 585

Jiang Yun adopted Nezha as her god-daughter, while Zi Shou accepted the arrangement in part to bind Nezha to Great Shang. Nezha eventually addressed Jiang Yun as “Mother” and became a princess of the Human Race. 586 587 599

East Sea incident and karmic reckoning

After befriending Ao Xin, the youngest daughter of the East Sea Dragon King, Nezha accompanied her to the three immortal islands in search of Ao Bing. During their invasion of Fangzhang Island, Nezha used the Universe Ring to defeat East Sea Navy guards without killing them. 598 606

When Biyun and Caiyun’s Yin-Yang Two Forms Sword Array severely injured Ao Xin while shielding Nezha, Nezha retaliated in rage and killed both disciples. This brought Shi Ji to Fangzhang Island to seek revenge. 607 609

Ao Bing then revealed that he was the white dragon from Nezha’s past-life memories and that he had caused the death of Shennong’s daughter. Nezha forgave him, but accepted responsibility for killing Shi Ji’s disciples and took her own life to end the conflict. 610 611

Lotus-body resurrection

Nezha’s soul returned to True Person Taiyi within the Spirit Pearl. Nuwa and Zi Shou separately prepared materials to restore her body, including the Nine Heavens Breathing Soil, Three Lights Divine Water, and the Twelve-grade Pure World White Lotus. 611 612 614

Before those plans could be carried out, a black shadow used the World Destroying Black Lotus to rebuild Nezha’s body. The process gave her a mature lotus incarnation and increased her strength. 617

True Person Taiyi later gave Nezha the Pure World White Lotus, which Zi Shou had intended as her grand gift and resurrection vessel. 622

Appearance

Before her death, Nezha appeared as an eight- or nine-year-old girl. Her lotus-body resurrection changed her appearance into that of a girl around fifteen or sixteen, while retaining recognizable facial features. 617

Despite her arrogance, Nezha is fiercely protective of those she considers friends. Ao Xin’s injury drove her into a cold rage, but Nezha later chose accountability over vengeance, stopped Ao Xin from sacrificing herself, forgave Ao Bing, and paid for her own actions with her life. 607 611
