Background and History
The Scourge's rise in Lordaeron followed the Cult of the Damned's plague operation, which transformed humans into Undead through contaminated food. Its earliest recorded forces consisted of ordinary Undead, Ghouls, and Abominations. 60 61 63
At Hearthglen, nearly 100,000 Undead attacked under the direction of black-robed Cult of the Damned acolytes. Meat Wagons breached the city's gates, but Uther Lightbringer's arrival and the elimination of the controlling necromancers caused the force to rout. 66 67
After Arthas Menethil claimed Frostmourne and became a Death Knight, the Scourge conquered Lordaeron, resurrected Kel'Thuzad, and began its march on Quel'Thalas. Its plague and massacres devastated the eastern reaches of Lordaeron, swelling its numbers into the hundreds of thousands before it reached the Elven Magic Gate. 87 88
The invasion of Quel'Thalas created the Scar of Death, a spreading trail of dead and corrupted land. The Scourge killed more than 200,000 High Elves during the campaign, then defiled the Sunwell to resurrect Kel'Thuzad as an Archlich. 93 107 111
Following the conflict, the Scourge retained major strongholds in the Plaguelands. Uther the Darkbringer commanded Stratholme and the Eastern Plaguelands, while Kel'Thuzad operated from Naxxramas over the Western Plaguelands; the two competed for the Lich King's favor. 277 333 349
Command Structure
| Commander | Position and activities |
|---|---|
| Lich King Arthas | Supreme master of the Scourge. He could send Iceguard reinforcements and empower Kel'Thuzad with Frostmourne's essence remotely. 371 |
| Arthas Menethil | Led the Scourge's conquest of Lordaeron and invasion of Quel'Thalas after becoming a Death Knight. 87 92 |
| Archlich Kel'Thuzad | Founder of the Cult of the Damned and commander in the Western Plaguelands. He used Naxxramas to spread plague, revive corpses, and train dark mages. 349 |
| Uther the Darkbringer | Arthas's former mentor, resurrected as a Death Knight. He commanded Stratholme, trained an elite Death Knight order, and led assaults against the living. 87 247 391 |
| Gavinrad the Dreadbringer | Lord Commander at Sunwell Citadel. He trained Blood Elf Death Knights and personally resurrected slain Blood Elves with retained consciousness. 203 |
| Anub'arak | Undead Nerubian king deployed to lead Scourge Nerubians. Though controlled, he retained traces of his former honor. 82 |
Capabilities and Tactics
Plague and Necromancy
The Scourge spreads death through plague, then converts the dead into replacements and new combatants.
- The plague can transform living victims into Undead and corrupt terrain into lifeless Plaguelands. 60 88
- Necromancers and liches raise corpses from battlefields, tombs, and mass graves to replenish the army. 88 349
- Kel'Thuzad's plague wing developed a strain specifically intended to infect Paladins. 351
- The Scourge's new plagues could infect Trolls and even plants. 333
Undead Conversion
The Scourge converts powerful fallen enemies into specialized Undead servants.
- Uther Lightbringer and Gavinrad the Dire were resurrected as Death Knights whose emotions and free will were twisted by Frostmourne. 87
- Fallen High Elves were remade as Banshees, Dark Rangers, and Death Knights during the invasion of Quel'Thalas. 101 102
- The Death Knights of Stratholme were primarily created from fallen Human Paladins, making them more elite than Naxxramas's warrior-derived Death Knights. 388
- The Scourge's control is not absolute: Salorian Dawngrasper's awakening caused nearly 90% of its Blood Elf Death Knights to defect. 203
Mass Assaults and Siege Warfare
The Scourge relies on numbers, tireless troops, and the battlefield's dead to overwhelm fortified positions.
- Its common formations include Undead, Ghouls, skeletal warriors, Abominations, Gargoyles, and Spider Demons. 66 134 135
- Meat Wagons grind corpses into compressed flesh-and-bone ammunition, allowing them to replenish projectiles as they advance. 67
- Death Knights can use Corpse Explosion to detonate accumulated bodies and break defensive structures. 94
- The army's lack of fatigue gives it a major advantage in prolonged engagements against living forces. 392
Elite Forces
The Scourge fields powerful specialist units alongside its massed Undead.
- Death Knights — elite mounted commanders and shock troops wielding Rune Blades. 203 388
- Liches and Dark Mages — necromantic and frost spellcasters, including the Cult of the Damned's Shadow Mages. 136 240
- Nerubians and Crypt Lords — elite spider-like forces from Northrend, led by figures such as Anub'arak and Anub'Rekhan. 81 82 353
- Frost Dragons — reanimated dragons capable of freezing structures and killing dozens of defenders with a single breath. 137
- Abominations — stitched monstrosities used as heavy infantry; the Scourge also maintains slaughterhouses and corpse-processing facilities to create them. 179 201
Command Link
The Lich King can observe through Scourge minions and relay battlefield information directly to Arthas.
- During the Battle of Dalsom, Arthas avoided an ambush because the Lich King observed the hidden archer through the perspectives of hundreds of thousands of nearby Undead. 95
- The army can lose cohesion when its controllers are eliminated, as demonstrated by the rout at Hearthglen after Uther destroyed the Cult's necromancers. 67
