Ch. 1181The Lady of the Night!
Chapter Summary: “Lady of Night”
Key Plot Points and Events
- Soren manifests his Shadow Realm behind him, though it is still less developed than the Lord of Radiance’s divine realm. Despite this limitation, Soren’s accumulated death-related power makes him vastly stronger than most greater deities.
- With Kelemvor already defeated and the God of Suffering persuaded to join him, Soren and his allies gain an overwhelming advantage over Naram, reducing the battle to essentially four against one.
- Several gods suddenly manifest avatars, claiming that Naram must be punished for betraying the ancient covenant of the gods. Soren recognizes that they are primarily interested in stealing Naram’s portfolios and divine power.
- The Lady of Night, Shar, enters the conflict. Her portfolios overlap with Naram’s domains of darkness, murder, trickery, and the Underdark, making him an especially valuable target.
- Soren orders his allies to attack Naram before the opportunistic gods can interfere. The Goddess of Misfortune assists him, and Naram is quickly driven to the brink of death.
- Elsewhere, Shar’s Dark Darter avatar attacks the Lady of Silver Moon, while the Spider Queen Lolth ambushes the Goddess of Magic. The battlefield becomes chaotic as the gods turn against one another.
- Just as Soren is about to finish Naram, Shar’s far more dangerous Nightbringer avatar appears and kills him from behind with a wheel blade.
- Shar absorbs much of Naram’s power, especially the domains of Darkness, Murder, Trickery, and the Underdark, while the remainder of Naram’s death-related power flows into Soren.
- Shar’s Shadow Realm manifests, revealing that she has likely advanced to the level of Greater Divinity. She then withdraws after securing her gains.
- The Goddess of Magic and Lady of Silver Moon are forced to abandon their avatars rather than risk destruction by Shar and Lolth.
- Soren and his companions leave the battlefield. Although Shar claims the final blow, Soren still obtains roughly 130 Divine Rank Value and 100 points of Divine Rank, leaving him dangerously overloaded with newly acquired death power.
Character Developments
- Soren demonstrates increased strategic awareness and restraint. Rather than immediately fighting every deity who arrives, he focuses on killing Naram first and accepts that he may need to share the spoils.
- Soren’s power continues to grow, but the rapid accumulation of divine energy is becoming dangerous. He must now assimilate and stabilize the differing death powers of Cyric, Kelemvor, and Naram.
- Shar/Lady of Night is revealed as a long-term conspirator. Her intervention suggests that Soren may have unknowingly helped execute a plan she had been preparing for some time.
- Shar’s successful absorption of Naram’s portfolios allows her to reach or confirm the status of Greater Divinity, establishing her as an even more dangerous rival.
- Naram shifts from an apparently dominant enemy to a doomed victim of divine opportunism. His varied portfolios make him valuable, but they also attract too many gods seeking to profit from his death.
- Lolth reveals her willingness to betray and ambush other gods, targeting the Goddess of Magic when the battlefield becomes unstable.
- The Goddess of Magic and Lady of Silver Moon are forced into retreat, showing how rapidly the balance of power changes once Shar reveals her true strength.
Significant Themes
- Betrayal and opportunism: The gods invoke justice and the ancient covenant, but their real motive is to claim Naram’s divine portfolios.
- Manipulation and hidden agendas: Shar’s actions reveal that major conflicts may be orchestrated by powers working behind the scenes. Soren may have been used as a tool in her larger plan.
- The danger of unchecked power: Soren’s rapidly expanding strength gives him tremendous potential but threatens to overwhelm his ability to control and integrate it.
- Divine politics and competition: The battlefield is not simply a struggle between allies and enemies; every deity is calculating how to gain the most from Naram’s downfall.
- Death as a composite doctrine: Soren must combine the distinct powers inherited from Cyric, Kelemvor, and Naram to create a unique philosophy and authority over death.
Character Interactions
- Soren reassures Lillian when she becomes angry at the gods’ attempt to steal their victory, emphasizing the need to prioritize Naram’s defeat.
- Soren warns his allies that the arriving gods are merely trying to “pick the peaches” after others have done the work.
- Shar confronts Naram publicly, then secretly abandons the main battle to attack another deity before returning to claim Naram’s death.
- Lolth ambushes the Goddess of Magic, while Shar attacks the Lady of Silver Moon, demonstrating that the visiting gods are as dangerous to one another as they are to Naram.
- The Goddess of Misfortune supports Soren’s assault on Naram, appearing genuinely committed to his destruction.
- The Goddess of Magic silently appeals to Soren for help, but he refuses to risk a direct confrontation with Shar and Lolth while struggling to control his newly acquired power.
