History
Ancient Inheritance and Reconstruction
The ancient True Martial Sect produced several renowned Martial Saints before disappearing for unknown reasons. Dragon Mountain Daoist could not determine whether internal strife or some other disaster caused its fall; the inheritance he recovered did not explain it 15 187.
At its height, the ancient sect maintained a single Protector in each generation, who practiced the True Martial Stance and was almost always a Martial Saint. Together with the combined strength of the True Martial Nine Sons, this gave the sect the equivalent of two Martial Saints’ combat strength 9 15.
As a young man, Dragon Mountain Daoist accidentally entered the True Martial Underground Palace and obtained part of its inheritance. He subsequently rebuilt the sect, winning its mountain foundation from the master of Divine Sword Mountain in a wager and obtaining official recognition through the Qing Province Governor 6 116.
The rebuilt organization continued the ancient teachings rather than maintaining an uninterrupted institution. Dragon Mountain Daoist regarded it as a continuation of the inheritance, but strictly distinct from the former sect 175.
The Nine Sons and Early Threats
Ning Qi’s arrival completed Dragon Mountain Daoist’s nine personal disciples, collectively called the True Martial Nine Sons. Their inherited system promised that nine Heaven-Human practitioners could jointly contend with a Martial Saint 3 9.
Qin Yun’s Heart Demon later drove him to attack Ning Qi in disguise. Ning Qi subdued him but stopped pursuing once he recognized his Eighth Senior Brother. Qin Yun left the mountain, and his departure, followed by Dragon Mountain Daoist’s seclusion, damaged morale and encouraged outsiders to probe the sect’s defenses 41 44.
After learning that Qin Yun had joined the Demonic Sect, Dragon Mountain Daoist declared that Qin Yun was no longer a member of True Martial and instructed the other disciples not to interfere. Privately, he gave Ning Qi unrestricted access to the sect’s treasure vault and told him that even his master did not need to know the details of his cultivation 42.
The most dangerous attacks included those by Black Sand Poison Master and the Three Ferocious Bandits of Tieling. Ning Qi secretly defended the inheritance, while Luo Wentian recalled disciples and closed the mountain. After reaching Heaven-Human, Dragon Mountain Daoist pledged to seek justice for the attacks 47 52 56.
During this closure, roughly a thousand disciples gathered on True Martial Mountain. Jiang Baishan served as its publicly visible White Mist defender, while Ning Qi secretly eliminated threats beyond the disciples’ knowledge 52.
Recognition and Expansion
Dragon Mountain Daoist’s Celestial Being Ceremony showcased the disciples’ foundations, sword formations, and sparring ability. Real Person Baihe attended to recognize the sect as a Daoist lineage, supporting Dragon Mountain Daoist’s ambition to restore its standing among the world’s Daoist sects 76 77 82.
After Luo Wentian’s succession, he and Dragon Mountain Daoist led outstanding disciples to Dao Province to strengthen relations with the established Daoist sects. True Mystery Sect’s support secured True Martial’s direct designation as the ninth Daoist Sect under heaven. Its short institutional history and shallow middle ranks prevented an even higher placement 126 127.
Expansion also exposed a weakness: although its leading experts and junior disciples were formidable, its Gang Yuan ranks remained thin. Luo Wentian’s recruitment campaign therefore sought both talented children and established martial artists. The large intake ultimately admitted about three hundred young disciples 129 131.
The recruitment also publicized the strength of Luo Wentian and White Ape. Their performances weakened the belief that the sect’s reputation rested exclusively on Dragon Mountain Daoist and Heavenly Sword Real Person. The new disciples were considered the foundation for the sect’s development over the following decades, and another intake of comparable scale was not planned in the near term 130 131.
The sect’s rapid success fostered arrogance among some disciples. A visit to True Mystery Mountain showed them the depth of an older sect’s foundations and reminded them that Heavenly Sword Real Person’s personal strength did not make the entire True Martial Sect unrivaled 175.
True Martial Hall and Spirituality Revival
When True Martial Hall emerged in the Black Sand Sea, the sect sought the Martial Saint inheritance connected to its own origins. Rival forces resisted its arrival because they feared its orthodox connection would grant it an advantage in claiming the hall’s treasures 187.
Dragon Mountain Daoist’s display of strength prevented the rival Heaven-Human Ranking experts from continuing to obstruct the expedition. The sect’s inherited martial arts also offered an advantage in passing through the mist surrounding the hall. For the younger disciples, witnessing the violent competition over the inheritance reinforced the importance of the sect’s protection and their own cultivation 187 188.
Crimson Sun Martial Saint later injured Dragon Mountain Daoist and threatened the disciples while Ning Qi remained inside. Ning Qi emerged, healed his master, killed three hostile experts, and confronted the Martial Saint 192.
Before the Spirituality Revival, the sect closed its mountain and prepared for the returning Spiritual Qi. Afterward, Ning Qi concentrated its inheritance, pills, and cultivation facilities on internal growth rather than reopening to visitors 202 219.
Spiritual Herbs collected within the sect’s territory supplied Ning Qi’s pill refinement. He also brought his master and fellow disciples into True Martial Hall’s Inner Hall to cultivate under time acceleration, while withholding a detailed explanation of the treasure’s origin to protect its secrecy 219.
Immortal Sect Era
Ning Qi’s establishment of the True Martial Immortal Sect made it the Martial World’s first Immortal Dao sect. Its disciples assumed responsibility for setting an example worthy of the World Lord’s institution 239 240.
Twenty years later, it occupied a position separate from the Eight Great Immortal Sects. It did not ordinarily interfere in worldly affairs, but its disciples punished lesser violations of Ning Qi’s prohibition against cultivators slaughtering mortals; severe violations incurred Thunder Punishment 240.
Its actual cultivation strength exceeded outside estimates. Ning Qi granted Inner Hall authority to people close to him, while meritorious disciples could also gain access. Two hundred years of cultivation within twenty external years allowed several members to reach Violet Palace 240.
Luo Wentian later remained in the True Martial World despite his interest in the Outer Domain, choosing to guard against disturbances. Following the merger of the Mountain and Sea Realm and Vast Origin Realm into True Martial, returning cultivators selected for Ning Qi’s reincarnation expeditions brought renewed activity to the sect 261 431.
After the Three Realms merged, Ning Qi reconfigured the entire Immortal Sect and placed the Profound Truth Domain under its authority. Suspended high above the resulting True Martial Spirit World, it became comparable in status to the Heavenly Court of myth: both Ning Qi’s own sect and the institution that wielded heavenly authority in his stead to preserve the world’s order 431.
The cultivators previously reincarnated into the Mountain and Sea Realm and Vast Origin Realm returned with those realms’ incorporation into True Martial. Their arrival filled the Immortal Sect with activity. Its standing also made it the sect that beings of the True Martial World most desired to join 431.
Organization and Governance
Leadership
| Position | Holder | Responsibilities and Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Rebuilding founder and first Sect Master | Dragon Mountain Daoist | Restores the lineage and trains its original personal disciples. After succession, he withdraws from daily administration but remains available when needed 116 125. |
| Second Generation Sect Master | Luo Wentian | Directs administration, recruitment, institutional reform, and external relations 125 126. |
| True Martial Protector | Ning Qi | Safeguards the Dao lineage. Stands above the Sect Master in critical matters and may remove an unfit Sect Master 125. |
| Punishment Hall head | Xiong Shi | Oversees discipline, chosen for his impartiality 125. |
| Skill Transmission Elder | Sun Chuanhai | Helps oversee the new disciples’ martial instruction 133. |
| Contracted guardian | Blade Demon | Agrees to guard True Martial Mountain for ten years 151. |
The Protector’s identity is restricted knowledge intended for successive Sect Masters. The True Martial Stance is likewise reserved for the Protector and must be passed only to a suitable successor 15 125.
In the Immortal Sect era, the organization acts as the embodiment of Ning Qi’s will, enforcing his laws without ordinarily intervening in worldly affairs. After the Three Realms merger, its responsibilities extend to wielding heavenly authority and maintaining order throughout the True Martial Spirit World 240 431.
Disciple Ranks and Reforms
| Rank or Role | Established Criteria |
|---|---|
| Outer Disciple | Originally associated with the Body Tempering Realm 28. |
| Inner Disciple | Originally associated with the Inner Yuan Realm 28. |
| True Disciple | Initially a disciple personally accepted by Dragon Mountain Daoist, rather than a rank determined by cultivation alone. Luo Wentian later removes the numerical restriction, allowing promotion through cultivation and contribution or special admission for exceptional talent 28 125. |
| Elder | Under Luo Wentian’s reforms, White Mist cultivation qualifies an existing True Disciple for elder status 125. |
| Reserve elder | Assigned to the three youngest of the ten existing True Disciples during the reorganization 125. |
| Steward or business administrator | An alternative role for disciples with limited remaining cultivation potential; contribution rewards preserve their access to advancement 125. |
Luo Wentian’s reforms establish punishment, teaching, medicinal-garden, and external-affairs halls. Promotion assessments consider cultivation, character, and contribution, while missions let younger disciples gain experience and earn resources. Elders may accept disciples, but are not required to do so 125.
Although the number of True Disciples is no longer fixed, Luo Wentian plans to reserve the True Martial Nine Piles and their subsequent coordinated inheritance for the nine most outstanding among them. Outer and Inner Disciple classifications are also adjusted according to age and cultivation 125.
The reforms recognize earlier service through a retrospective contribution record, allowing disciples to exchange their accumulated merits for teachings in the Scripture Pavilion. Luo Wentian also invites suggestions for further adjustments as the sect expands 125.
Recruitment
- Expansion-era eligibility: The major recruitment accepts children under ten who have not begun martial cultivation, while established martial artists must meet the White Mist cultivation threshold 128 129.
- Ascension Stairway: A 999-step first trial testing perseverance; candidates unable to reach the top cannot enter 128 129.
- Character screening: The Heart Inquiry Platform exposes dishonest applicants and infiltrators, including people with outwardly respectable reputations 129 130.
- Large-scale intake: About three hundred children are admitted as Outer Disciples and assigned suitable foundational Stake Skills 131 133.
- Experienced applicants: Gang Yuan experts may seek admission under stricter standards, but have little prospect of accessing the sect’s core 125 129.
- Immortal Sect admission: The later sect has no fixed recruitment method. Even beggars and mortal beasts may enter when the appropriate opportunity arises 240.
Martial Inheritance and Techniques
True Martial Nine Piles
Nine superior Stake Skills correspond to the Nine Sons of the Dragon: Qiu Niu, Ya Zi, Chao Feng, Pu Lao, Suan Ni, Ba Xia, Bi An, Fu Xi, and Chi Wen 9.
- Form the foundation of the ancient True Martial system 9 121.
- Have no internal hierarchy; Dragon Mountain Daoist assigns his personal disciples different piles according to their suitability 9.
- Originally grant a superior foundation capable of three thousand jin of single-arm force at Bone Refinement Completion 24.
- Ning Qi later optimizes them to approach peerless Stake Skill quality without increasing cultivation difficulty 125.
Nine-to-Three-to-One System
| Step | Inherited Methods | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Nine foundations | True Martial Nine Piles | Establish the practitioners’ complementary foundations 9 121. |
| Three branches | Shaking Heaven, Quaking Earth, and Overturning Sea strength and True Gang methods | Consolidate the nine foundations into three coordinated paths 31 121. |
| Unified Heaven-Human teaching | Three Origins Secret Records | Continues the system at the Heaven-Human level 63 121. |
| Combined combat | Supporting secret arts | Enable the recorded feat of nine Heaven-Humans fighting a Martial Saint 121. |
The Three Origins Secret Records can reach Heaven-Human Completion and, as a combined inheritance, point toward the Martial Saint Realm 63.
The ancient inheritance also includes True Martial Force, the Layered Force Method matching the True Martial Stance and standing above the three branch methods. Dragon Mountain Daoist’s recovered inheritance lacks this method, although Ning Qi develops the insight needed to reconstruct it 31.
True Martial Stance
A peerless Stake Skill derived from the True Martial Nine Piles, recreated by Ning Qi after its loss 15.
- Serves as the general outline from which the ancient True Martial Nine Piles were originally derived 15.
- Cultivated exclusively by the True Martial Protector 125.
- Produces a peerless foundation; Ning Qi records five thousand jin of single-arm force at Bone Refinement Completion while using it 24.
- Gathers True Dragon Qi to temper the body and can grant True Dragon Divine Intent 15 21.
- Its manual is kept secret rather than placed into general circulation 15.
Sword Formations and Shared Techniques
- Tiangang Disha Sword Formation: Both a coordinated sword dance and a combat formation; becomes a signature technique that disciples exchange contributions to learn 77 135.
- Improved Body Tempering Powder: Helps deepen the disciples’ foundations, with visible results during contests against the Divine Sword Sect 28 82.
- Sleepdream Art: Greatly accelerates the personal disciples’ cultivation 125.
- Condensing Aura Pills: Assist Luo Wentian and Xiong Shi in reaching Gang Yuan 66.
- Enlightenment Tea: Helps the senior disciples overcome bottlenecks and strengthen their foundations 142.
- Ning Qi’s expanded manuals: Include superior Stake Skills, Layered Strength Arts, Gale Force Arts, offensive techniques, and secret arts distributed through the sect’s reward system 125.
- Enhanced body-tempering support: Ning Qi’s secret arts and improved medicinal resources reduce the time required for Body Tempering to approximately forty percent of the original duration for disciples of comparable talent 154.
Martial Saint Inheritance
True Martial Hall provides Ning Qi with a fuller inheritance, including the Martial Saint cultivation path, powerful martial arts, secret methods, and pill formulas. Its teachings explain the refinement of Five Elements Dharma Power through the five organs 190 204 219.
- Small True Martial Seal: A powerful martial art studied by Ning Qi within the hall 189.
- True Martial Seal: A Martial Saint-level art from which the Small True Martial Seal originates; obtained by Ning Qi from Senior Mysterious Turtle 204.
- Spiritual Pill formulas: Adapted by Ning Qi to use the Spiritual Herbs appearing after the Spirituality Revival, supporting the sect’s rapid growth 219.
- Restricted dissemination: Ning Qi shares cultivation benefits and powerful methods with those close to him while protecting the secrecy of True Martial Hall 219.

Economy
- Training fees and protection: Wealthy households pay annual fees to train their children, while receiving the protection associated with the sect’s name 44.
- Sect businesses: Escort agencies, taverns, banks, and other enterprises are managed by disciples assigned to commercial work 44.
- City revenue: Ownership of True Martial City provides a stronger financial and recruitment foundation 97.
- Contribution exchanges: Disciples submit rare books, scriptures, secret arts, fruits, and other resources in return for suitable techniques and cultivation supplies 125.
- Ceremonial offerings: Gifts presented during Dragon Mountain Daoist’s Celestial Being Ceremony substantially enrich the treasure vault and support the sect’s subsequent development 79.

Relationships
- True Mystery Sect — Recognizes the rebuilt Daoist lineage, supplies eighteen hundred volumes of scriptures, and supports its admission as the ninth Daoist Sect. Exchanges between their disciples establish friendly ties 76 93 94 127.
- Divine Sword Sect — An early rival linked by the elders’ Ten-Year Pact and friendly sparring. After its destruction, Zhuang Chen receives treatment and a welcome among the True Martial disciples 26 28 107 117.
- Great Yan Imperial Court — Grants official rewards and ownership of True Martial City. Later promises support against the Demonic Sect and Southern Border, with General Shenyu stationed nearby 96 97 142.
- Demonic Sect — Repeatedly targets the inheritance and plots the sect’s destruction. Heavenly Sword Real Person’s victory over Blade Demon prompts its leadership to suspend provocations 96 128 144 151.
- Southern Border Alliance — Suspects the sect’s involvement in the destruction of its Qing Province stronghold and allies with the Demonic Sect. Its elders later vote five to four to shelve action against True Martial 117 128 151.
- Sword Inquiry Pavilion — Covets the Sword Stele and other foundations. Gu Changhe’s attack ends in defeat, and the settlement transfers its Inheritance Sword Tower rather than exterminating the pavilion 134 136.
- Qin Yun — The former Eighth True Disciple leaves after attacking Ning Qi, but retains divided loyalties. He later protects Jiang Baishan and Lin Ruhua against the Demonic Sect 41 144 159.
- Senior Mysterious Turtle — Provides Ning Qi with the fuller True Martial Inheritance and Martial Saint-level arts. He leaves Ning Qi a perception mark for locating True Martial Hall again 204 207.
- World Lord Ning Qi — Protector, principal source of improved cultivation methods, and founder of the Immortal Sect. Its later disciples represent his will through impartial enforcement of the world’s laws. After the Three Realms merger, the sect maintains the True Martial Spirit World’s order in his stead 125 239 240 431.
- Returning reincarnated cultivators — Cultivators selected by Ning Qi for expeditions into the Mountain and Sea Realm and Vast Origin Realm return with those realms’ merger into True Martial, gathering at the Immortal Sect 431.
Traditions
- Zhenwu Peach Meet: Begins as a private gathering to strengthen the bonds between Ning Qi and his fellow disciples. Under the Immortal Sect, Luo Wentian turns it into a triennial event that encourages younger disciples 117 240.
- Year-End Grand Competition: Evaluates and rewards young disciples, while giving elders an opportunity to identify potential successors. The competition following the large recruitment separates new and old disciples; the top three newcomers receive promotion to True Disciple 154 155.
- Institutional restraint: After defeating Sword Inquiry Pavilion, the sect chooses compensation over annihilation, avoiding unnecessary bloodshed and retaliation from allied sects 136.
- Experiential training: Visits to established sects and expeditions into the wider martial world are used to broaden disciples’ horizons, temper their will, and correct complacency 175 187.
- Immortal-era impartiality: Its law-enforcing disciples are known for acting without selfish motives and otherwise avoiding interference in worldly affairs 240.
- Heavenly Court reputation: After the Three Realms merger, a saying spreads through the Lower Realm: “True Martial establishes the Heavenly Court; to enter its gates is to attain the Dao and ascend to immortality!” Ning Qi knows of the saying but does not know its origin, and recognizes that repeated retellings have made it increasingly fantastical 431.
