Nature and Function
- Spirituality distinguishes Spiritual Qi from Heaven and Earth Power. After ancient Martial Saints stripped it from Spiritual Qi, the remaining energy gradually became the Heaven and Earth Power familiar to modern cultivators 181.
- Its importance is qualitative, not merely destructive. Ning Qi finds that restored Spiritual Qi possesses greater vitality and many more transformations, whereas Heaven and Earth Power without Spirituality is comparatively “dead and lifeless,” with a sealed upper limit 184.
- It can be separated and recombined. Ning Qi briefly extracts Spirituality from the Yu King Pearl and determines a suitable ratio for combining it with Heaven and Earth Power to synthesize complete Spiritual Qi 183.
- Restored Spiritual Qi contains the Five Elements. After reaching the Fifth Realm, Ning Qi examines Spiritual Qi layer by layer and recognizes the Five Elements within every strand as a foundation for his future understanding of the world's Rules 219.
Related Forms of Energy
| Term | Relationship to Spirituality |
|---|---|
| Heaven and Earth Power | The diminished energy left after Spirituality was removed from Spiritual Qi. It remains powerful but lacks much of Spiritual Qi’s spiritual nature 181. |
| Spiritual Qi | The complete energy restored when Spirituality merges with Heaven and Earth Power 183 202. |
| Spiritual Power / Martial Saint Power | Refined power whose condensation requires Spirituality. The two names refer to the same power 181. |
| Dharma Power | Another name for Spiritual Power. It is cultivated by Martial Saints and housed in the five organs, where it develops through the Five Elements 190. |
| Magic Power | In the Spirit Realm's cultivation system, the Magic Power Realm tempers Spiritual Qi into Magic Power and corresponds to the Martial World's Martial Saint Realm 212. |
Cultivation Requirements
- Without Spirituality, condensing Spiritual Power and independently entering the true Martial Saint Realm are effectively impossible 181.
- External aids such as the Blood Emperor Gu and the Demonic Sect’s Holy Pill produce Pseudo-Saints, rather than overcoming the restriction through genuine cultivation 181.
- Before the revival, Old Daoist Baishan and other returning Ancient Saints remain at Heaven-Human Completion and rely on secret treasures for Martial Saint-level power 181.
- A small reserve can support experiments without supporting a breakthrough: the Spirituality Ning Qi extracts from secret treasures is insufficient for him to enter the Martial Saint Realm 196.
- Restored access to Spiritual Qi does not replace the need for a suitable foundation and cultivation method. Many contemporary Heaven-Human cultivators had specialized in only one of the Three Flowers and began rebuilding their cultivation when the prospect of genuine Martial Saint advancement returned 202.
Effects of Refined Spiritual Power
- Spiritual Power refined into the body differs substantially from power temporarily controlled through secret treasures. Ning Qi describes the transition as moving from using a cannonball as a hammer to actually making it explode 204.
- Following Ning Qi's breakthrough, Spiritual Power assimilates his former Gang Qi and Yuan Pill, becoming the sole cultivated power within his body 207.
- It strengthens his flesh and blood, greatly improves recovery from ordinary injuries, and transforms divine intent into Spiritual Sense, which can both perceive the surroundings and influence reality 207.
- The Five Elements Qi housed in the organs become his principal foundation of power, although his strengthened Three Flowers remain available 207.
History
Concealment and the Age of Dharma Decline
The disappearance of Spirituality was deliberate. Under The Saints’ Covenant, successive generations concealed it until the undertaking was completed several thousand years before the present era. As Spiritual Qi grew increasingly sparse, it eventually became Heaven and Earth Power; this decline was also called the Age of Dharma Decline 195 210.
The plan served three purposes: preserving hidden Spirituality to restore the World Will, suppressing Life Poison to a degree, and preventing new Martial Saints from arising even if they obtained a Martial Saint Method. Restricting Martial Saint cultivation also helped delay the Mountain and Sea Realm’s invasion, because Life Poison created Martial Saint Beacons 210.
Old Profound Tortoise later confirms that the method for concealing Spirituality and awakening the World Will originated in the True Martial Hall 211.
Ning Qi’s Investigation
While reading ancient books supplied by Old Daoist Baishan, Ning Qi notices that their descriptions of Spiritual Qi do not match the energy he can currently sense. He suspects that its spirituality has weakened and considers whether that quality can be extracted independently 176.
After Baishan explains the missing component, Ning Qi draws Spirituality from the Yu King Pearl and synthesizes Spiritual Qi. He recruits Blade Demon to test its refinement, successfully observing its transformation into Spiritual Power—but also uncovering a hidden poison that rapidly consumes Blade Demon’s vitality and lifespan 181 183 184.
The Hunchbacked Elder subsequently identifies the affliction as Life Poison, a Rule Poison merged with Spiritual Qi. Ning Qi obtains a technique for weakening it and continues developing a filtration method with Blade Demon 191 194.
Ning Qi eventually develops the Myriad Paths Nirvana Method, which can completely purify the Spiritual Qi he refines for himself. However, when he expels a purified wisp back into the world, Life Poison immediately contaminates it again, demonstrating that individual filtration cannot resolve the environmental source 196.
Before the revival, he adapts his deductions into separate poison-weakening methods for Blade Demon, Dragon Mountain Daoist, and Qin Yun. These cannot eliminate Life Poison as completely as his own method, but surpass the earlier technique supplied by Old Profound Tortoise. He also develops protective methods for White Ape and Zhuang Chen's awakenings 202.
Spirituality Revival
Onset
- Old Daoist Baishan initially predicts that Spirituality will fully revive in approximately one year, later notifying Ning Qi that only two months remain 182 202.
- Great Flame moves its population toward fortified cities, while the True Martial Sect closes its mountain and gathers Ning Qi’s fellow disciples near the Seeking Dao Institute 202.
- Nine Dao Sounds announce the revival. Heaven and Earth Power becomes turbulent enough that Heaven-Human cultivators can no longer resonate with it normally 202.
- Brilliant light manifests as Spirituality condensed to an extreme degree. Vast quantities surge from the heavens, the void, and the land, merging with Heaven and Earth Power to restore Spiritual Qi throughout the world 202.
- The revival lasts one day, although its consequences continue reshaping the world afterward 208.
Effects on the World
| Area | Documented Effect |
|---|---|
| World size | Earth Veins awaken and heaven and earth expand tenfold 203 208. |
| Ordinary people | The vitality of Spiritual Qi eases physical exhaustion and allows some seriously ill people to move again 203. |
| Bloodlines | Spirit Beast bloodlines can activate; Zhuang Chen and White Ape safely complete their awakenings under Ning Qi’s guidance 195 203 204. |
| Spiritual plants | The Enlightenment Tea Tree transforms, gaining sufficiently dense Wood attributes to support Ning Qi’s cultivation 203. |
| Treasure formation | Clusters of Power Origin descend. One within True Martial Mountain nurtures a Sword Embryo 204 205. |
| Continuing resources | Spirit Fruits, spirit ore veins, and other spiritual objects can emerge after the initial transformation. Newly appearing Spiritual Herbs later support Ning Qi's production of Spiritual Pills 208 219. |
| Political order | Expanded distances weaken existing connections. Ancient Saints’ territories break from the Great Yan Dynasty, and new nations and sects arise 208 219. |
| Territorial competition | The prospect of newly formed treasures motivates Ancient Saints to secure territories before the revival, particularly in spiritually blessed areas 202. |
Documented Cultivation Gains
| Cultivator | Result | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Ning Qi | Advances into the Martial Saint Realm and reaches the Fourth Realm during the revival 203 204. | Uses the Five Elements Yuan Plundering Art with Metal, Fire, Water, and Wood sources: the Geng Metal Spirit Skeleton, Great Sun Compass, Yu King Pearl, and Enlightenment Tea Tree 204. |
| Blade Demon | Becomes a First Realm Martial Saint 204. | Benefits from the revival and his comparatively deep foundation, including Transformation Realm Blade Intent; chooses Metal Qi as his foundation 204. |
| Dragon Mountain Daoist | Becomes a First Realm Martial Saint 204. | Completes his breakthrough during the revival, choosing Water Qi as his foundation 204. |
| Qin Yun | Becomes a First Realm Martial Saint 204. | Uses Fire Qi as his foundation 204. |
World Will Recovery and Later Enrichment
The revival also fulfills the Saints' long-term objective of restoring the dormant World Will. At the Martial Saint Convention, Heaven Chopping Martial Saint explains its recovery and proposes awakening it to strengthen the world's defenders. The Sages subsequently enter its space, receive its recognition, and are bathed in Origin Power before the ceremony is disrupted by traitors 210 221 224.
After becoming World Lord, Ning Qi further enriches the environment by dissolving defeated Black Demon Sect cultivators' Dharma Power into Spiritual Qi. Its density rises severalfold, nourishing the Earth Veins and enlarging the world. Unlike the violent expansion during the Spirituality Revival, this growth proceeds gradually under his control and continues afterward 235 238.
Later, the True Martial World undergoes another period of rapid expansion as an immense influx of Spiritual Qi is refined. New lands, skies, and spirit creatures emerge, followed by a longer period of steady development 251.
Dangers and Limitations
Life Poison
- Spiritual Qi’s restoration does not remove Life Poison. The revived energy remains contaminated 203.
- Life Poison consumes lifespan and Spiritual Souls; Blade Demon’s experiments demonstrate its rapid aging effect when contaminated energy is refined 184 191.
- Mere exposure to ambient Spiritual Qi is distinguished from refining it into the body: ordinary people can receive its benefits without suffering the same poisoning 203.
- Bloodline awakening creates an additional danger. Baishan warns that White Ape’s activated Spirit Beast bloodline could expose him to fatal Life Poison unless protective measures are taken 195.
- During the revival, many humans and Exotic Beasts awakening special constitutions die from Life Poison. Ning Qi's guidance and protective methods allow those under his care to benefit safely 203 204.
- Purification is not automatically permanent outside a protected refinement process. Spiritual Qi purified by Ning Qi becomes contaminated again when returned to the surrounding environment 196.
Limits of Accelerated Advancement
- The initial Spiritual Qi tide is dangerous enough that even Ancient Saints wait for it to calm rather than risk being torn apart 203.
- The revival provides an exceptional breakthrough opportunity, not permanent effortless advancement. Ning Qi attributes his rapid gains to the manifestation of the origin during the event 208.
- Once that opportunity ends, an Earth-attributed treasure alone cannot immediately carry him into the Fifth Realm. He must accumulate and temper Spiritual Power while allowing his body to adapt 208.
- Ning Qi later overcomes this limitation through intensive cultivation in the True Martial Hall, using its tenfold time acceleration and power-tempering functions. After a month, he condenses Earth Qi in his spleen and reaches the Fifth Realm; this is a later breakthrough rather than another direct gain from the revival 218.
- Less-developed cultivators cannot obtain the same immediate gains as those already at Heaven-Human Completion. Ning Qi's other fellow disciples benefit from improved cultivation conditions but lack the foundations to become Martial Saints during the event 202.
