Background

Garrosh led the Mag'har Orcs in Karabor's defense against repeated Burning Legion assaults. He personally fought on the front line, directed repairs during brief lulls, and saw Karabor's survival as his responsibility. He measured himself against the legacy of his absent father, Grom Hellscream. Grandmother Geya'an raised and guided him after Grom left, becoming the person whose counsel Garrosh trusted most. 482

When Thrall, Durotan, and the New Horde reached Karabor, Garrosh eagerly embraced the chance to join them and prove himself. King Saurfang later told him of Grom's death and resurrection as a Death Knight, which Garrosh considered a desecration of an Orc warrior. His conflict with Grom centered on their priorities: Grom fought the Burning Legion alongside the Iron Horde, while Garrosh believed the Horde itself had to come first. Garrosh's aggressive raids against Alliance territory eventually forced Thrall to recall him from Outland. At Geya'an's urging, he surrendered his command of Karabor and the Mag'har to the Horde and travelled to Azeroth to study and temper his conduct. 547

Personality

Garrosh's defining conviction is an uncompromising devotion to the Horde. He repeatedly framed every ambition, sacrifice, and act of defiance as being “for the Horde,” including his pursuit of Old God power. That singular focus gave him exceptional resistance to Y'Shaarj's attempts to overwrite his will, but also made him vulnerable to having his existing obsession amplified into extremism. 791 847 881

He is proud, direct, impulsive, and strongly committed to Orc supremacy. His hostility toward non-Orc Horde races and the Alliance repeatedly created political crises. Even so, he is not wholly unreflective: he accepted Nazgrel and young Saurfang as joint checks on his Northrend command because he respected their greater patience and judgment. 577 726

Garrosh deeply respects strength, honor, and personal responsibility. He resented Grom's Death Knight existence as a betrayal of Orcish freedom, yet later accepted that his own failures were his own to answer for. Garrosh defeated Thrall in an arena challenge, removing the last obstacle to his succession. After taking office, he won strong support from Orc radicals and the Dragonmaw Clan, while his “Greater Horde” ideology alienated Trolls, Tauren, Warlocks, and even many Orc clans. 705 725 726 755

Pandaria and the Heart of Y'Shaarj

Cornered by internal opposition and a Goblin labor strike, Garrosh sent the Horde to Pandaria to redirect the crisis into war. He then secretly led Kor'kron troops and Goblin engineers into Y'Shaarj's underground palace, seized the Heart, and caused severe Sha pollution in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. 767 844 845

Garrosh successfully fused with the Heart, but his actions isolated the Horde internationally and deepened its internal division. He promised compensation to the Shaohao Dynasty, yet tightened Kor'kron control over Orgrimmar and treated dissenting Horde races as enemies. 846 847

Horde Civil War

Thrall, Saurfang, Durotan, Grom, the Tauren, Trolls, Ogres, and numerous Orc clans rebelled against Garrosh. His principal support came from the Kor'kron, radical Orc factions, the Dragonmaw Clan, the Rustwater Syndicate, and a limited number of allied forces. 849 856

As the rebels breached Orgrimmar, Garrosh fortified himself in the underground Hall of Y'Shaarj and empowered loyalists with Twilight energy. He ultimately fought Thrall, Grom, Varian, Jaina, Vol'jin, and Baine while merged with the Heart. Geya'an confronted him with the suffering his rule had caused, leading him to revert to normal form, disarm himself, and surrender. 868 880 881

Escape and Final Judgment

Garrosh was imprisoned pending a Pandarian public trial, but escaped through Kairozdormu's Temporal Anomaly. Thrall later revealed that the escape had been permitted as part of a plan to establish access to a parallel Draenor. 882 885 886

In parallel Draenor, Garrosh broke with Kairozdormu, destroyed the Temporal Anomaly, killed the Bronze Dragon, and helped Grom defeat Mannoroth without accepting demonic blood. 889 900

After being sentenced to death in absentia, Garrosh made his final stand at Grommashar. Thrall destroyed his escape airship, defeated him with the aid of Draenor's elements, and executed him with a lightning strike.
