A cultivator who passes its trial ascends as an immortal; one who fails dies and vanishes. History

In the distant Ascension Era, Tribulation Transcendence was comparatively lenient: it delivered only nine ordinary lightning bolts, and ascension was achievable for capable cultivators. Around ten thousand years before the story, it became drastically harsher, replacing ordinary lightning with Purple Firmament Divine Lightning and later adding Chaos Divine Lightning to the process. 1 53

Chen Yi began clashing with it roughly 721 years before he noticed its absence. By the beginning of the story, he had failed yet survived eighty-one Immortal Ascension Tribulations, making him an exceptional fugitive from its judgment. 1 183 When Chen Yi's two-star avatar exceeded the West Sea Realm's limits, Tribulation Transcendence bypassed its usual sequence and attacked with Chaos Divine Lightning, but Chen Yi escaped with the Essence of Immortal Dao. 9

During Chen Yi's eighty-second encounter, the entity pursued him to Ziwei Continent after he fled rather than endure its remaining lightning. Chen Yi later infiltrated its cloud body, stole Chaos Lightning Pool essence, faked his death, and escaped again. 94 95

After the eighty-second confrontation, Tribulation Transcendence stopped responding to Chen Yi's aura. Chen Yi eventually discovered it locked behind a door associated with Wuji. Unable to meet it in the present, Chen Yi later returned through the River of Time to reenact earlier encounters and obtain more Chaos lightning power. 183 187 360
