Background / History
Gray Dwarves are encountered throughout the swamp and underground regions of Mystra. Rachel is attacked by Gray Dwarves before warning that their army is marching toward Yellowstone Island and Dragon Tooth Village 24. Their forces use crossbows, patrols, camps, siege weapons, and engineering equipment, making them a much more organized threat than ordinary monsters.
The Swamp Gray Dwarves encountered around Yellowstone Island have been heavily mutated by magic. Their bodies are short and stout, their skin is unusually hard, and many have fist-sized tumors growing from their faces or necks. Roger’s Sin Mark identifies these mutated Gray Dwarves as monsters rather than intelligent beings 25. Nevertheless, their forces display coordination, resource management, and the ability to adapt their tactics.
Roger initially exploits their poor perception by attacking isolated outposts and using Ladder Cloud Steps to move beyond their pursuit range. After suffering heavy losses, the Gray Dwarves increase patrol sizes, replace some crossbows with hand axes and shields, and begin constructing fortified camps 28 30. Their commander also recognizes the ineffectiveness of crossbow bolts against Roger and changes the army’s equipment accordingly 30.
Some Gray Dwarves possess considerably greater intelligence and specialization. The Gray Dwarf Chieftain is skilled in martial arts and owns rare treasures, while the Great Prophet uses curses to mobilize hundreds of thousands of Gray Dwarves in White Moon City 32 39. Other groups include the well-equipped Dark Dwarves of Band City and the Purgatory Gray Dwarves associated with Lord Blood Crow 107 276.
Appearance
Gray Dwarves are generally short, stout humanoids. The Swamp Gray Dwarves have gaunt, skeletal faces and rough, rock-like skin. Many possess foul-smelling tumors caused by magical mutation 25.
Distinguishing features include:
- Short, sturdy physiques 28.
- Rough Stone Skin covering much of the body 25.
- Gaunt faces with protruding eye sockets and cheekbones among the mutated swamp variants 25.
- Tumors on the face or neck that emit a decaying magical odor 25.
- Crossbow-focused military equipment.
- Lizards used as mounts by some Gray Dwarf knights 77.
- Long beards and sharply defined features among certain leaders, including General Mogley of Band City 111.
Personality and Behavior
The mutated Swamp Gray Dwarves are described as having extremely poor perception and little apparent rationality. Their low intelligence makes them vulnerable to stealth, misdirection, and infighting 25 28 30. They can also respond violently to threats, pursuing Roger across Yellowstone Island and searching for his cave.
Despite their apparent lack of intelligence, Gray Dwarf forces are capable of organized military adaptation. They increase patrol sizes, alter weapon loadouts, construct camps and walls, deploy siege weapons, and conduct large-scale assaults 30 31. This tactical development makes them more dangerous than their monster classification suggests.
Gray Dwarf leaders show a wider range of intelligence and morality. The Chieftain has considerable martial arts ability, while the Great Prophet is manipulative and cruel, abusing Fungus Slaves and using curses to control his people 32 39. The Great Prophet’s treatment of his subjects contrasts with the Primal Dwarves, a separate dwarf lineage noted for creativity, vitality, and optimism 475 480.
Abilities & Skills
Rough Stone Skin
Rough Stone Skin gives Swamp Gray Dwarves unusually high resistance to physical damage. Their skin is described as having a hardness comparable to rock 25.
- Provides especially strong resistance to ordinary physical attacks.
- Does not fully protect them from armor-piercing weapons.
- Roger’s Penetrating Arrows can pierce the protection directly 28.
Crossbow Proficiency
Gray Dwarves are skilled in forging and using crossbows, particularly short crossbows designed for rapid fire 25.
- Their hit rate against aerial targets increases by 2.
- Short crossbows have high firing speed and power.
- Their limited range makes them ineffective against enemies who can attack from farther away 25 30.
- Gray Dwarves also manufacture specialized crossbow bolts with strong armor-piercing capabilities 28.
Exceptional Tenacity
Gray Dwarves possess unusually high toughness and can continue fighting after suffering serious injuries. Roger notes that even an assassinated Gray Dwarf struggles violently and alerts nearby soldiers 27.
- High resistance to pain and physical punishment.
- Allows wounded Gray Dwarves to remain active.
- Their Tenacity can be reduced by exhaustion, including the effects of Roger’s laxatives 35.
- Roger’s repeated kills of Gray Dwarves contribute to the development of his own Tenacity 25 27 30.
Martial Arts Expertise
The Gray Dwarf Chieftain possesses Martial Arts Expertise, apparently gained through an unusual opportunity 32.
- Grants considerable close-combat ability.
- Includes powerful hand-axe attacks and practiced movement.
- The Chieftain’s martial arts knowledge leads Roger to investigate the existence of an ancient martial arts civilization in Mystra 32 34.
- Martial arts manuals found in the Chieftain’s camp include Plum Blossom Stakes and Drunken Fist 34.
Curses and Magical Control
The Great Prophet uses an Evil Curse to communicate with and mobilize Gray Dwarves throughout White Moon City 39.
- Can issue orders across a vast underground settlement.
- Allows the Great Prophet to organize a city-wide search.
- The Great Prophet’s curse is also connected to the Bloodline Curse placed on Roger and Ke Yi.
- Despite his magical power, the Great Prophet is physically weak and is killed by Roger 37 39.
Mining and Engineering
Gray Dwarf forces possess practical mining and engineering capabilities.
- Operate coal-powered mining carts 72.
- Use ropes, large iron nails, climbing equipment, and covered supply carts during military operations 31.
- Build camps, walls, outposts, and siege works on Yellowstone Island 28 30.
- Deploy ballistae and other engineering weapons against the Emerald Dragon hatchling 31 32.
