Background
Wang Yuan transmigrated to the Primordial World and awakened with a system that continuously granted him supreme treasures, spiritual roots, cultivation methods, and a Chaos Spiritual Vein. Despite this wealth, he initially could not cultivate or use magical power, making him deeply wary of the world’s dangers 1.
He met Master Tongtian and Do Bao when they approached his mountain. Mistaking Tongtian for family, Wang Yuan treated him as a nephew, freely gave him rare treasures, and gradually became a central—if misunderstood—supporter of the Intercept Sect 2 9. Tongtian’s reverence for him grew after Wang Yuan casually handed over a Heavenly Dao Fragment, an object Tongtian considered capable of changing a cultivator’s fate 9.
During the Investiture of the Gods period, Wang Yuan chose to support Zhou Wang and Yin Shang. He viewed Zhou Wang as a capable ruler unfairly maligned by later accounts, approved of his opposition to feudal fragmentation and wasteful sacrifices, and opposed Ji Fa’s planned replacement of the Human Emperor’s title with the subordinate title of Son of Heaven 39 76. His system rewards depended on altering the original course of the Investiture of the Gods, giving him a direct stake in preventing Yin Shang’s fall 149.
After gaining magical power, Wang Yuan began serious cultivation for the first time. His initial secluded session lasted nearly five hundred years, during which he cultivated the Great Universe Scripture and prepared to involve himself in the Journey to the West calamity 583 591. He later left Immortal Mountain through a puppet identity capable of integrating into the world line, allowing him to join the scripture-seeking group without attracting suspicion 649.
Wang Yuan helped free Goddess Pingxin from Hongjun’s seal and accepted her appointment as the Son of the Underworld. The title placed him below Pingxin and the Fengdu Emperor but above the Ten Kings of Hell, granting him Netherworld Luck and authority over Reincarnation 801 802.
After the Earth Immortal Realm’s transition into the God Realm, Wang Yuan and Tongtian traveled through other worlds to refine World Power. Their journeys brought them into the Dou Qi Continent, where Wang Yuan aided Xiao Huohuo, and the Douluo Continent, where he aligned himself with Spirit Hall 869 871 929.
Appearance
Wang Yuan is presented as an exceptionally handsome, youthful-looking man. Yang Jian is surprised that a figure regarded as a senior by a Quasi-Sage-level expert appears so young 171.
- Usually appears relaxed and informally dressed around his courtyard and hammock 137 178.
- Maintains a youthful appearance despite his immense seniority in the eyes of Tongtian and other cultivators 171.
- His puppet clone can be made physically indistinguishable from him 582.
Personality
Wang Yuan is cautious, comfort-seeking, and strongly inclined toward a quiet life. He frequently describes himself as weak or ordinary even after acquiring formidable abilities, prefers remaining hidden during conflicts, and would rather rest at Immortal Mountain than seek fame or responsibility 103 710 868.
His caution does not prevent him from acting when people under his protection are threatened. Nezha’s death provokes rare fury, and Wang Yuan immediately uses the Chaos Green Lotus Root to rebuild him a superior body 74. He similarly protects Do Bao, supports the Three Demons of Xuanyuan Tomb, and provides Yang Jian with a new foundation despite the risks involved 160 177 216.
Wang Yuan is casually generous with treasures that other cultivators consider priceless. He treats Innate Spiritual Roots, Primordial Purple Energy, Heavenly Dao Fragments, and supreme treasures as resources to be shared with trusted companions 9 62 433. His modern habits also surface in the Primordial World: he plays games, makes Mahjong and playing cards, and complains about a lack of entertainment 137 139.
