Background / History
Spiritual Stone Monkey
The newly born Spiritual Stone Monkey was initially driven away by the monkeys of Flower Fruit Mountain. He later entered their waterfall trial, discovered Water Curtain Cave, and was crowned Monkey King after leading the troop to its new home 596.
Concerned that his ordinary monkey subjects could not survive stronger predators, he sought a path to immortality. A woodcutter directed him to Slanting Moon Three Stars Cave, where he demonstrated his sincerity by kneeling for three days without food or water before Subhuti Ancestor accepted him and named him Sun Wukong 598 599.
Subhuti initially made Wukong perform labor and taught him only mortal martial arts to temper his impatient nature. Once deemed ready, Wukong received the Great Celestial Art, Seventy-Two Earthly Transformations, and Somersault Cloud; his rapid advancement and boastful display of these arts led Subhuti to expel him and forbid him from claiming their relationship 600 602 603.
King of Flower Fruit Mountain
Wukong returned to Flower Fruit Mountain after twenty years and spent more than two centuries teaching the monkeys the Art of Immortality. Their aptitude was limited, but their lifespans increased and the strongest among them reached the Tribulation Transcendence Stage 604.
His growing prestige attracted six Demon Kings. He became their seventh sworn brother, with the Bull Demon King as the eldest, and Flower Fruit Mountain developed into a recognized demon power 605.
Seeking weapons and armor worthy of his strength, Wukong went to the East Sea Dragon Palace. He claimed the 13,500-jin Sea Stabilizing Divine Iron—which recognized him as its destined master and became the Ruyi Jingu Bang—and later received armor assembled by the Four Sea Dragon Kings 607 608.
Rebellion and the Heavenly Court
After Black and White Impermanence brought him to the Netherworld over an allegedly exhausted lifespan, Wukong fought his way out with the Ruyi Jingu Bang. King Yama had deliberately arranged weak opposition, allowing the disturbance to serve a larger scheme 610 611.
The Heavenly Court appointed him Bima Wen, a low-ranking keeper of the Heavenly Stables. On learning that the office held no real rank, he destroyed the stables, returned to Flower Fruit Mountain, and declared himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven 614. Haotian later formally granted the title, above first grade and exempt from bowing, to bring him back to Heaven without assigning duties 618.
Wukong subsequently became implicated in the Peach Orchard, Peach Banquet, Golden Core theft, Tushita Palace, and Heavenly Palace incidents. He openly dismissed Li Jing's forces and proved that his mastery extended beyond physical combat to spells and divine powers 630 631.
Zi Xia and the Chaos Demon Ape
When Wukong returned to the Heavenly Court to demand Zi Xia's release, Haotian effortlessly suppressed him and ordered the slaughter of the demons and monkey brothers allied with him. Grief, regret, and fury drove Wukong to accept power offered by a mysterious figure 640.
The power shattered the Heavenly Court's restrictions and raised his aura to at least Quasi-Sage Peak. After Zi Xia's death, he transformed into a destructive giant ape—the Spiritual Stone Monkey's Chaos Demon Ape form—and battled Haotian until Duobao Tathagata joined the Jade Emperor 640 642.
The mysterious aid was later revealed as Master Tongtian's: Tongtian had placed Primordial Purple Energy in Wukong before his birth and used it to lend him power during the Heavenly Court conflict 768 779.
Journey to the West
Guanyin returned Wukong to Tang Sanzang's side to continue the western pilgrimage. Wukong accepted partly because he sought greater strength and eventual revenge against Haotian 648. He travelled with Tang Sanzang, Pigsy, Sandy, and the White Dragon, defeating or seeking help against the many demons encountered along the route 649.
His memories of the earlier Heavenly Court rebellion had been sealed. As fragments resurfaced—especially memories connected to Zi Xia—the Tightening-Headband Incantation caused him severe pain whenever he tried to recall the past 755 773.
Six Eared Macaque Conflict
The Six Eared Macaque exploited Wukong's confusion by trapping him in an illusion of his past and attempting to replace him on the pilgrimage. The Macaque copied Wukong's appearance, cultivation methods, spells, and weapon, while Wukong remained sealed away 774 776.
Tongtian eventually appeared before Wukong, explained his role in Wukong's life, and formally acknowledged him as his chosen disciple. Wukong overcame his heart demon and accepted Tongtian as his master 779.
After recovering Zi Xia's soul from Venus Taibai, Wukong adopted the Six Eared Macaque's identity as a countermeasure. This allowed him to cultivate and act without the Heavenly Court immediately suspecting his involvement 789 796.
Path to Sagehood
Wukong refined the origins of the Red Butt Horse Monkey, Six Eared Macaque, and, later, the fallen Long-Armed Macaque Yuan Hong. These origins strengthened his Demon Ape Skill and brought him to the threshold of the Saint Realm 795 830 855.
At the foot of Spirit Mountain, Wukong refined the Primordial Purple Energy in his Primordial Spirit and faced the Heavenly Tribulation head-on. Treating the tribulation as a battle, he charged into the thunderclouds, passed the ordeal, and became a Sage capable of recreating the Chaos Demon Ape 856.
Appearance
Sun Wukong is a hairy-faced stone monkey usually seen in golden battle attire, wielding the Ruyi Jingu Bang. In his unleashed true form, he becomes a colossal golden ape defined by overwhelming destructive intent 640 642.
- Golden Chainmail Armor, Flowing Cloud Shoes, Phoenix Wing Purple Gold Crown, and a scarlet cloak 640.
- Carries the black-and-gold Ruyi Jingu Bang, which can change size at his will 607 641.
- True form has golden fur, a single black lock centered on the forehead, crimson eyes, and a body comparable in height to Heavenly Court palaces 642.
- Can assume the Six Eared Macaque's likeness, gaining six ears while retaining his own appearance otherwise 784.
Personality
Wukong is proud, restless, and intensely responsive to insults. His contempt for the Bima Wen post, eagerness to show off his transformations, and readiness to challenge Heavenly forces all stem from his need to be recognized on his own terms 602 614 616.
Beneath his arrogance, he is deeply protective of those he considers his own. His original pursuit of immortality began with a desire to protect the monkeys of Flower Fruit Mountain, while his reactions to Zi Xia, Tang Sanzang, Pigsy, and Sandy reveal fierce loyalty and fear of failing them again 598 767 776.
His later experiences make him more calculating. Rather than immediately confronting the Six Eared Macaque after regaining freedom, he accepts Zhao Gongming's plan to exploit the Macaque's identity for cultivation and revenge 789.
