Background / History

Tongtian was the master of the Intercept Sect and the mentor of Daoist Duobao. While investigating an Immortal Mountain whose origin could not be deduced even by a Heavenly Dao Saint, he encountered Wang Yuan. Wang Yuan treated him as a nephew, gave him the Supreme Clarity Art, and became the source of many of Tongtian's cultivation resources and treasures 1 3.

After Wang Yuan's influence changed his conduct, Tongtian became more confrontational toward Yuanshi Tianzun and the other Sages. He sealed GoldenAo Island to protect the Intercept Sect from the Investiture of the Gods conflict, executed Chang Er Ding Guang Xian to demonstrate the sect's resolve, and openly challenged Yuanshi 7. His refusal to submit led Laozi, Yuanshi, Jie Yin, and Zhun Ti to repeatedly besiege him for his treasures and the Intercept Sect's resources 8 35 36.

The loss of Jiang Xue became a major motivation for Tongtian's cultivation. He swore to find her, fought through dangerous secret realms, recruited the tiger beast Kunwu, and later disrupted Jiang Xue's wedding in the Upper Realm to take her away 88 89 1019.

Personality

Tongtian is fiercely protective of his disciples and unwilling to sacrifice the Intercept Sect for personal advancement. He rejected Hongjun's offer to become Profound School Master because accepting it would have required him to abandon his disciples during the Investiture of the Gods Great Calamity 540 541.

He is also stubborn, proud, and deeply vengeful toward Yuanshi. Tongtian insists that only one of the Chan Sect and Intercept Sect can survive, and he repeatedly seeks direct confrontations with Yuanshi despite the risks involved 537 575.

Under Wang Yuan's influence, Tongtian became more cunning and willing to use deception. He has feigned injury to lure enemies into close combat, concealed his strength to mislead Hongjun, and carefully tested potential disciples before accepting them 302 470 576.

Appearance

Tongtian is depicted as an imposing sword cultivator whose presence becomes increasingly sharp when he channels the Sword Great Dao. During the Black Mist crisis, he appears in azure robes and carries a sword while his sword intent tears through the void 858.

Resistance Against Hongjun

Tongtian recruits Pingxin and other allies to challenge Hongjun's authority. When Hongjun offers him supremacy over the Profound School in exchange for abandoning his disciples, Tongtian refuses and activates the Ten Thousand Immortals Formation and Six Souls Banner 223 540 541.

Restoration of the Intercept Sect

Following the Investiture conflict, Tongtian focuses on restoring the Intercept Sect's influence. He develops Penglai Three Islands, supports Duobao's plans within the Buddhist Sect, and manipulates the Journey to the West Great Calamity by preparing the Stone Monkey as a future Intercept Sect ally 492 566 571.

Journey to the West

Tongtian recruits Sun Wukong after exposing Subhuti as Zhun Ti Buddha-Mother's incarnation. He offers Wukong protection against the Buddhist Sect's Sages and strengthens him with cultivation-enhancing fruits 780.

Heavenly Dao and God Realm Wars

Tongtian enters the Heavenly Dao Realm by creating a world within the Chaos Pearl. He joins Yang Mei against Hongjun, uses the World-Destroying Millstone, and later transfers the Earth Immortal Realm's living beings into the Chaos Pearl to deny Hongjun their power 859 860 864.
