Background & History
Yuanshi is one of the Pangu Three Pure Ones and inherited a share of Pangu's fortune and merit alongside Laozi and Tongtian. His shared lineage with them ended when Tongtian divided his spirit into three and publicly severed their karma, declaring that the Three Pure Ones no longer existed. 35 92
As leader of the Chan Sect, Yuanshi pursued the sect's luck through Xi Qi and viewed the stability of Yin Shang's luck as a direct threat to the Chan Sect's position against the Intercept Sect. 52 Hongjun later entrusted him with the Investiture of the Gods List and the God-Slaying Whip until the person responsible for the Investiture was chosen. 49
Appearance
Yuanshi normally appears as an imposing Daoist in flowing robes, maintaining the bearing and ceremonial grandeur expected of a Sage. Even strong winds only stir his robe hem and hair. 248
- His eyes can emit divine light described as capable of annihilating heaven and earth when he is enraged. 404
- When he activates Law, Heaven and Earth, his body grows into a giant form, with Pure Qi manifesting as Azure Dragon-like markings across his flesh. 418
- His full Physical Body form is heavily muscled and surrounded by dense Pure Qi and Azure Dragon manifestations. 419
Personality
Yuanshi is narrow-minded, extreme, and highly vindictive. He favors obedience and treats opposition as something to be eliminated; his schemes were specifically blamed for the Intercept Sect's destruction in the original Investiture of the Gods timeline. 7
He is patient and politically calculating when a reward is at stake, as shown by his careful consideration of Ji Fa's offer of Xi Qi's national fortune. 197 However, personal humiliation and losses frequently overwhelm that restraint. After being killed and revived by Tongtian, he immediately sought revenge on Tongtian's disciples rather than recovering from his injuries. 422
Yuanshi is deeply protective of the Chan Sect's interests, but this protection is selective. He intervened to save Qingxu and Guangchengzi from the White Dragon Elder, yet he was willing to send Huang Long on a mission that could provoke the Dragon Clan into war. 198 294 He also displays greed toward rare treasures, attempting to seize Do Bao's Thirty-Sixth Grade Creation Green Lotus until Tongtian deterred him. 413
Abilities & Skills
Sage Authority and Dao Principles
As a Heavenly Dao Saint, Yuanshi can exert overwhelming pressure on lesser cultivators, travel through space, wield Dao Principles, and employ Laws directly in combat. His arrival above GoldenAo Island incapacitated lower-generation Intercept Sect disciples and forced even second-generation disciples to resist his aura. 7
- Uses Sage-level pressure to suppress opponents. 7
- Can intervene across great distances and rescue disciples from attacks. 294
- His anger can alter the environment around Kunlun Mountain, darkening the sky and causing natural disasters across tens of thousands of miles. 404
Jade Purity Divine Secret and Divine Powers
The Jade Purity Divine Secret is the Chan Sect's core technique for cultivating mana and realm. Yuanshi supplements it with numerous divine powers, giving the Jade Purity lineage its reputation for mastery of Laws and techniques. 419 506
- Jade Purity Divine Lightning / Jade Purity Lightning Method — Condenses destructive lightning into dragons or thunderbolts; he used it to ambush Tongtian and pressure Fuxi and Bai Ze. 418 421 504
- Great Heavenly Thunder Hand — A divine hand technique used against Fuxi and Bai Ze. 504
- Overturning the Sea — A large-scale divine power countered by Bai Ze's Great Dao of Wisdom. 504
- Wind and Thunder — Combines violent wind and lightning to overwhelm defensive barriers. 505
- Cloud Surge — A deceptively gentle-looking sea of clouds filled with invisible, injuring edges; regarded as one of the Jade Purity Thirty-Six Divine Powers' most dangerous techniques. 506
- Heavenly Punishment — A divine power modeled after Hongjun's authority, though it was deflected by the Dragon Emperor's dragon qi cocoon. 447
Nine Revolutions Arcane Skill
Yuanshi personally cultivates the Nine Revolutions Arcane Skill, the Chan Sect's supreme Physical Body method. He adapted it into the Eight Nine Arcane Art for disciples unable to match his foundation. 419
- Creates an exceptionally resilient Physical Body, described as the strongest in the Primordial World. 419
- Enables him to withstand thunderbolts that would normally damage a Sage. 419
- His original body, cultivated over countless Yuanhui, was erased when he was killed by Tongtian and revived. 422
Law, Heaven and Earth
By pushing the Nine Revolutions Arcane Skill to its limit, Yuanshi can manifest the Saint Realm version of Law, Heaven and Earth. 418
- Enlarges him into a giant powerful enough to nearly reach the ceiling of the Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation. 419
- Trades agility for immense Physical Body strength and defense. 419
- Allowed him to contest the Dragon Emperor in close combat, though Ao Zhen's Dragon Clan physique eventually proved superior. 447
Deduction and Strategic Calculation
Yuanshi regularly uses deduction to monitor factional luck, identify threats, and exploit openings. 52 499
- Determined that Yin Shang's stabilized luck was strengthening the Intercept Sect. 52
- Deduced Tongtian's absence from the Primordial World and personally intervened at Star Plucking Tower. 499
- Can be blocked by greater powers concealing heavenly secrets; he failed to identify Ji Chang's killer and Huang Long's killer. 197 489
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Pangu Banner — Innate Supreme Treasure and Yuanshi's primary offensive weapon; Tongtian cut it apart during their battle, but Hongjun later restored it. 417 421 426
- Central Wu Ji Apricot Yellow Flag — Top-grade innate defensive Spiritual Treasure; damaged by Tongtian and restored by Hongjun. 417 426
- All Heavens Celebration Cloud — Defensive treasure originating from a wisp of Pangu's majestic spirit. 417 418
- Jade Ruyi — Formed from the white lotus root of the Thirty-Sixth Grade Green Lotus and retained as one of his remaining treasures after the battle with Tongtian. 425
- Dragon Tiger Jade Ruyi — Used while calculating Tongtian's whereabouts. 499
- Nine Dragons Agarwood Carriage — His carriage, used when he descended upon the Star Plucking Tower battlefield. 499
- Investiture of the Gods List and God-Slaying Whip — Temporarily entrusted to him by Hongjun for the coming Investiture. 49
- Bright God Robe — Defensive treasure bestowed upon Huang Long; its inability to resist Primordial Spirit attacks caused the Dragon Emperor to question Yuanshi's intentions. 205
- Twenty-Fourth Grade Green Lotuses — Seized from Yang Jian, Bai Ze, and Jin Ling and used to defend himself against Tongtian. 509
Relationships
- Dao Ancestor Hongjun — Teacher and political patron. Hongjun entrusted him with the Investiture treasures, ordered him to investigate abnormalities in the Primordial World, restored his lost cultivation, and repeatedly supported the Chan Sect's position. 49 248 459
- Master Tongtian — Former fellow member of the Three Pure Ones and Yuanshi's principal rival. Tongtian severed their karma, killed Yuanshi once in the Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation, and later humiliated him at Star Plucking Tower. 35 422 509
- Taishang/Laozi — Fellow Pangu Pure One and senior ally. Yuanshi sought his support in the Three-Party Alliance against the Intercept Sect. 426 427
- Jie Yin and Zhun Ti — Uneasy Western Sect allies. Yuanshi paid heavily for their assistance, but they also lured him to Mount Sumeru to face the Dragon Emperor. 427 445
- Jiang Ziya — Disciple whose demon form Yuanshi reluctantly tolerated so long as Jiang remained loyal to the Chan Sect. 49
- Guangchengzi — Loyal first disciple and eventual Chan Sect representative chosen by Yuanshi to act publicly on the sect's behalf. 257 552
- Huang Long Zhenren — Disciple used in Yuanshi's attempt to provoke the Dragon Clan and Intercept Sect into mutual conflict. 198
- Dragon Emperor Ao Zhen — Enemy and rival strategist. Ao Zhen attempted to kill Yuanshi for his Primordial Purple Energy, but Hongjun intervened to preserve Yuanshi. 445 450
- Ji Fa — Xi Qi ruler who offered half of Xi Qi's national fortune in exchange for Chan Sect intervention against Yin Shang. 197
Major Arcs
Investiture of the Gods Preparations
Hongjun appointed Yuanshi as temporary custodian of the Investiture of the Gods List and God-Slaying Whip. Yuanshi then accepted Ji Fa's offer to make the Chan Sect Xi Qi's state religion and dispatched Huang Long under the pretense of avenging Ji Chang. 49 197 198
His underlying plan was to sacrifice Huang Long as a catalyst: Huang Long's death could drive the Dragon Clan into a war with the Intercept Sect and narrow the Chan Sect's disadvantage in disciple numbers. 198
Conflict with the Dragon Clan
Yuanshi attempted to make the Dragon Clan lead the attack on Yin Shang while the Chan Sect remained in support. The Dragon Emperor recognized that Yuanshi intended to use the clan as cannon fodder, escalating the conflict between the two factions. 233 208
After Tongtian killed and weakened him, Yuanshi was lured to Mount Sumeru and forced into a battle with Ao Zhen. He survived only because Hongjun intervened when Ao Zhen was close to taking his life and Primordial Purple Energy. 445 450
Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation
Yuanshi entered Tongtian's Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation alongside Jie Yin and Zhun Ti. He used the Pangu Banner, Central Wu Ji Apricot Yellow Flag, and All Heavens Celebration Cloud, then revealed his hidden Nine Revolutions Arcane Skill and Law, Heaven and Earth form. 417 419
Tongtian had deliberately concealed his strength. He broke the Pangu Banner, killed Yuanshi, and destroyed Yuanshi's secretly cultivated Physical Body. 421 422
Three-Party Alliance
After his revival, Yuanshi sought assistance from the Human Sect and Western Sect to counter the Intercept Sect. He offered the Central Wu Ji Apricot Yellow Flag to the Western Sect and promised to help Xuan Du improve his Great Dao insights, forming an alliance between the Chan, Human, and Western Sects. 426 427
Star Plucking Tower Battle
When Yuanshi deduced that Tongtian had left the Primordial World, he descended in the Nine Dragons Agarwood Carriage and attacked the Intercept Sect. He overwhelmed the newly ascended Sages Fuxi and Bai Ze with Jade Purity divine powers and prepared to massacre the Intercept Sect disciples. 499 504 505
Tongtian returned before Yuanshi could finish the attack, defeated him again, and exposed Yuanshi's seizure of younger cultivators' Green Lotuses. 509
Destruction of the Intercept Sect
Following Hongjun's victory over Tongtian and the sealing of Tongtian's allies, Yuanshi returned to the Primordial World convinced that the Heavenly Dao favored the Chan Sect. He slaughtered most of the remaining Intercept Sect disciples, deliberately leaving a small number alive to witness the deaths of their fellows. 547
He allowed Jie Yin and Zhun Ti to select several captives for the Western Sect, but refused to surrender the Intercept Sect's Four Direct Disciples or Immortal Wuyun. 548
