Background / History

Orochimaru was the Third Hokage’s disciple and a celebrated Konoha prodigy who became one of the legendary Sannin alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. By the Chunin Exams, he is a rogue ninja; he is shown plotting Konoha’s destruction from Otogakure 64 71 88 97.

He knows about Danzo’s concealed Sharingan. When Naraku exposes that secret, Danzo suspects Orochimaru leaked it, although the passage does not establish that he actually did. Naraku later identifies Orochimaru and Zetsu as an Akatsuki pair 64 161.

Appearance

  • Long hair: Whipped about by the aftermath of Naraku’s attack on his Triple Rashomon defense 73.
  • Extensible tongue and neck: Uses his tongue to seize Naruto and stretches his neck toward Sasuke when attempting to implant a curse mark 71 72.
  • Human-skin disguise: Sasuke’s fire attack burns away the mask covering his face rather than killing him 72.
  • Giant serpent form: His Eight-Headed Technique produces a white, hundred-meter-tall serpent with eight heads and eight tails 97.

Personality

Orochimaru treats people as potential vessels, experimental subjects, or expendable tools. He covets Sasuke’s body, considers Naraku a possible alternative, and ignores the suffering of his own forces while seeking an explanation for Naraku’s unfamiliar power. When threatened, he bargains, retreats, or sacrifices others to protect himself 73 93 94 95 96.

His research obsession survives both defeat and resurrection. Years confined within a cursed seal give him time to reconsider his earlier extremism, but his decision to cooperate is also practical: Naraku offers access to other worlds and their knowledge. His later human experiments show that this change of allegiance does not end his ruthless research methods 185 202 240.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Techniques and Bodily Manipulation

  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands / Shadow Serpent Hand: Sends snakes from his arms to attack an opponent 72 94.
  • Snake swarm: Expels numerous snakes from his mouth; they enlarge and advance with sword tips protruding from their mouths 72 73.
  • Explosive snake attacks: Detonates a severed snake and follows with attacks from both sides to catch Naraku during his escape 96.
  • Snake Shedding: Spits out a new version of himself, abandoning the trapped outer body to escape Naraku’s ice 96.
  • Extended tongue and neck: Restrains Naruto at range and attempts to bite Sasuke’s neck to place a cursed seal 71 72.

Snake Summoning

  • Summons giant snakes for combat, including Manda, also called the Ten-Thousand-Serpent 71 88 94.
  • Manda demands two hundred offerings in return for fighting Naraku; Orochimaru agrees because his survival is at stake 94.
  • Can restrain Manda through his summoning technique, preventing it from escaping the battle 95.
  • Manda is his strongest summoned beast, but Naraku kills it with the Divine Gun 95 96.

Immortal Rebirth and Cursed Seals

  • Transfers his soul into other bodies through the Immortal Rebirth Technique 93 97.
  • Plans to place a cursed seal on Sasuke and eventually take his body 93.
  • Cannot immediately change vessels again after possessing a replacement body 93.
  • Repeated reincarnation leaves his soul riddled with wounds, making him especially vulnerable to Naraku’s soul-targeting Black Coffin 97.
  • Survives his bodily death within a cursed seal and remains aware of events through Anko and Kabuto. Itachi later restores him from Anko’s seal 185.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Uses reincarnated versions of the First and Second Hokage against the Third Hokage during the Konoha Crush 80.
  • After his own resurrection, summons the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Hokage to support the Allied Shinobi Forces 185.
  • Their souls are available because Naraku previously killed the Death God and released them 186.

Defensive Techniques and Deception

  • Triple Rashomon / Triple Labyrinth Gate: His strongest stated defense. Naraku’s Crescent Moon Sky Rush destroys all three gates but exhausts its power in doing so 73.
  • Substitution and clones: Uses a mud substitute to escape a strike near Sasuke and a clone to evade being cut in half 73 94.
  • Infiltration: Enters the Chunin Exams under a Grass Village disguise and later impersonates the Kazekage 71 72 79.
  • Battlefield misdirection: Uses a snake swarm to occupy Naraku while secretly approaching Sasuke; Naraku’s Byakugan detects the attempt 73.

Eight-Headed Technique

  • Transforms into a massive eight-headed, eight-tailed serpent capable of crushing everything in its path 97.
  • Breaks out of the Six-Garment Ice Purity Formation and resists Naraku’s ice projectiles 97.
  • Can be temporarily restrained by high-ranking Bakudō; its scales do not stop Black Coffin’s attacks against flesh and soul 97.

Sealing and Research

  • Five Elements Seal: Suppresses Naruto’s leaking Nine-Tails power, causing him to lose consciousness 71.
  • Pursues the nature of Naraku’s power because he recognizes that it is unlike ordinary ninjutsu 93 94.
  • Conducts human experiments on captured opponents in another world, reserving Charlotte Lingling and Kaido as especially valuable subjects 240.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Retrieved from a snake expelled from his mouth after his kunai breaks against Naraku’s Zanpakutō. He uses it in later clashes with Naraku 72 94 96.
  • Kunai — Initially used to block Naraku’s sword; becomes dented and snaps during their Forest of Death fight 72.
  • Human-skin mask — Conceals his identity during the Chunin Exams until Sasuke burns it away 72.

Relationships

  • Hyuga Naraku — Initially an enemy and prospective replacement vessel. Naraku kills him, but after resurrection Orochimaru seeks to prove useful enough to join his travels between worlds 73 97 185 202.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Desired host for his Sharingan. Sasuke seeks him out for power, but Naraku interrupts both the curse-mark attempt and the later recruitment 72 93.
  • Third Hokage — Former teacher whom Orochimaru kills during the Konoha Crush. The resurrected Third later apologizes for failing to train his disciple properly 97 185.
  • Jiraiya and Tsunade — Fellow Sannin with decades of shared history and a love-hate rivalry. They oppose him in battle and remain hostile when he returns, particularly because he killed their teacher 88 89 185.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Assistant who helps him perform summons after he loses his arms. Kabuto survives his death and later appears with snake-like alterations associated with Orochimaru’s cells 88 99 146 177.
  • Anko — Her cursed seal houses his surviving presence and becomes the means of his resurrection 185.
  • Manda / Ten-Thousand-Serpent — Powerful but contentious summoned ally. Orochimaru prevents its retreat and uses it as cover; it curses him before Naraku kills it 94 95.
  • Zetsu — Identified by Naraku as his Akatsuki partner 161.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Chunin Exams and the Forest of Death

Orochimaru infiltrates the exam after killing three participating Grass Village ninja. Leaving their bodies behind exposes his presence; he later regrets the taunt when Naraku proves difficult to defeat and reinforcements threaten to arrive 71 73.

He overwhelms Team 7, seals Naruto’s Nine-Tails power, and burns their Scroll of Heaven. Naraku interrupts his attempt to mark Sasuke, detects a second covert approach, and destroys his Triple Rashomon defense. Orochimaru retreats while declaring interest in Naraku’s body as an alternative vessel 71 72 73.

Konoha Crush and the Sannin Battle

Disguised as the Kazekage, Orochimaru delays Sasuke’s disqualification from the finals to preserve his plans. The invasion begins during Sasuke’s match with Gaara, and Orochimaru confronts the Third Hokage with reincarnated Hokages 79 80.

The Third dies in the battle, while Orochimaru escapes with his arms cut off, escorted by the Four Sound-Nin. He has also killed the Kazekage 82 101.

His subsequent negotiations with Tsunade end in a confrontation between the three Sannin. Kabuto assists with summoning because Orochimaru cannot form hand seals himself. As Jiraiya recovers from drug effects and Tsunade regains her fighting instincts, they turn the battle against him 88 89.

Sasuke’s Defection and Orochimaru’s Death

Sasuke reaches his hideout seeking power, but Orochimaru has already transferred into another host and must postpone taking Sasuke’s body. Naraku arrives to retrieve Sasuke and challenges Orochimaru directly 92 93.

After losing Manda, Orochimaru offers to surrender Sasuke in exchange for a truce. Naraku refuses and freezes him. Orochimaru reveals his Eight-Headed Technique, only to be restrained and killed by Black Coffin 95 96 97.

Naraku burns the enormous corpse to ash with Hadō 54: Waste Flame, while acknowledging that he cannot prevent every possible resurrection method. Tsunade publicizes the victory to restore Konoha’s prestige after the invasion 99 101.

Resurrection and the Shinobi War

Unable to perform Impure World Reincarnation themselves, the alliance accepts Itachi’s proposal to restore Orochimaru. Itachi extracts him from Anko’s cursed seal, and he cooperates by summoning all four previous Hokages 185.

Orochimaru explains that confinement gave him time to reconsider his conduct. More importantly, evidence of other worlds has redirected his ambition: he wants to acquire their knowledge and believes Naraku is the person capable of taking him there 185.

After the Hokages return to the spirit realm, Orochimaru and Itachi rejoin the coalition following their search for Kabuto 197.

Otherworld Expedition and Research

Naraku accepts Orochimaru into the group leaving the shinobi world. Orochimaru is especially excited by the prospect of encountering scientists from other worlds 202.

During the expedition, he receives Charlotte Lingling, Kaido, the Three Calamities, and the gravely wounded Rengoku Rokushi as research subjects. He begins experimenting on the latter groups first, preserving Lingling and Kaido because of their exceptional value. Survivors captured during the confrontation with Kurozumi Orochi’s forces are also assigned to his research 240 241.
