Background and History
Scavenger captain
Mark leads Lighthouse Scavenger surface expeditions. During an early search of the R-49 ship ruins, he commands a team that includes Penny and Donnie 259.
His team later returns with compressed food, military supplies, construction materials, rare ore, and recovered bodies, though the mission costs fifteen Dust Citizens and two Upper Citizens 263. Mark reports evidence of new human activity on the surface: weapon damage in derelict corridors, destroyed Spines, and skeletal remains resembling Snake Dogs. Charles dismisses the findings as possible Crimson Element contamination, but Mark provides photographs and videos that convince Victor to take the discovery seriously 263.
Prospective City Lord
As Mark approaches succession to the City Lord position, Penny’s Reproduction Mission threatens to become a political scandal for the Scavengers. Jeff and Mo Cheng urge him to protect his succession first, but Mark chooses to handle the issue personally 271.
Mark ultimately admits that he does not want the office for its own sake. He considers himself better suited to surface work and wants to eliminate Devouring Beasts so humanity can return to living on the ground 271.
When Tie Hui’s forces confront the Lighthouse, Mark introduces himself as the Scavengers’ commander and the intended next City Lord 284. During Charles and Senger’s seizure of the Lighthouse, Mark is instructed to organize the Scavengers for a coming conflict, but remains focused on obtaining medicine for City Lord Morgan and saving Penny and Donnie from execution 288.
Capture and experimentation
During a surface mission, 4068 slits Mark’s throat and implants a Spine parasite in him 293. Imperial personnel recover him with catastrophic injuries, including 236 broken ribs, severe organ damage, a damaged carotid artery and esophagus, and multiple spinal fractures 294.
Dr. Carrie’s operation succeeds: the Spine fuses with Mark, while the Crimson Element is cleared from the laboratory. His condition stabilizes, but his life essence continues to be consumed 295.
Tie Hui later tests Mark with a Spirit Seed. Mark begins transforming and draws in some of its life essence, but regains control, knocks the Spirit Seed away, and calls out Ran Bing’s name 296. Ran Bing can calm him even when his Crimson Element flares and he begins to lose control 297.
Devouring Beast transformation
Mark eventually undergoes a full beast transformation, killing laboratory personnel during the Lighthouse crisis 314. Although his transformed body can heal rapidly, it remains a carbon-based organism that can be restrained by sufficiently advanced defensive weapons 314 316.
After Lahtu activates a Spirit Seed, Mark and Charles—both drawn by its life essence—charge toward Tie Hui. Mark hesitates when confronted with Morgan, Ran Bing, and the others, retaining emotional ties to his former life 316.
Tie Hui defeats Mark by driving a Chainsword through the Spirit Seed in his chest and grinding it apart. Mark’s escaping life essence dissipates through the cracks in his body before Astra Militarum soldiers bind him 317.
Personality
Mark is calm and restrained, even after surviving repeated surface operations. He presents extraordinary claims with collected evidence rather than reacting to Charles’s ridicule 263.
He prioritizes the Scavengers’ safety over his own political advancement. His wish to destroy the Devouring Beasts and reclaim the surface is rooted in protecting humanity rather than gaining authority 271.
Even after becoming a Devouring Beast, Mark retains fragments of his human attachment to Ran Bing and the people of the Lighthouse. Those emotions allow him to resist the Spirit Seed temporarily and later make him hesitate during his confrontation with Tie Hui 296 316.
