Background
Hong Ying was born on the Royal Land to a prominent military family; her father was a renowned general. She entered the Travel Cultivator Dao Gate at twelve and became a Chief of Travel Cultivators at twenty-three after only eleven years of cultivation, without relying on elixirs. 668
She served as a general during the wars surrounding the Sage and the Demon Soil. Her battlefield reputation was built on charging into enemy formations, killing opposing commanders, and breaking formations before her own troops advanced. 251 748
Prince Chun stated that Hong Ying had been willingly betrothed to him after he failed to marry Zhao Xiaowan. Hong Ying later killed him, insisting that he deserved death and that she had no other choice. 255 256
Hong Ying's defining past conflict was with Zhao Xiaowan. After killing Zhao Xiaowan, she intended to surrender to the Peddler in hopes of sparing herself and the soldiers, but she also died before she could do so. Her memories of the Demon Soil, Zhao Xiaowan, and the war were subsequently left severely fragmented. 256 409
Appearance
Hong Ying's present body gradually regrew around her long-spear form. Her appearance changes as more flesh and features are restored, though the spear tip remains a defining part of her body. 304 462 761
- Waist-length black hair, which she treats as one of her most prized features. 307 526
- A human-like body with limbs and flesh, centered around a large spear tip. 462
- Strong, angular facial features, deep-set eyes, sword-like brows, and a straight nose; her bearing is described as cold and martial. 410
- A tall, athletic build with notably powerful legs and a battlefield-ready posture. 410
- Frequently wears armor, carries a long spear, and keeps a sword at hand. 327 625
Personality
Hong Ying is blunt, combative, and intensely proud of her strength. She sees direct action as the proper answer to danger, often dismissing caution as cowardice and preferring to attack before an enemy can establish an advantage. 580 791 843
Her confidence is paired with a strong need for recognition. She carefully maintains her hair, makeup, clothing, and restored body, is sensitive to insults about her appearance, and readily accepts expensive gifts despite calling them vulgar. 317 438 457 526
Despite her frequent quarrels with Zhao Xiaowan, Ninth Girl, and other inhabitants of the Portable Abode, Hong Ying is loyal in battle. She protects allies without hesitation, follows Zhao Xiaowan's battlefield orders, and repeatedly risks herself to support Li Banfeng. 626 782 814
Her memories of the past remain incomplete. Modern cities and trains unsettle her, while old songs, military reports, and recovered memories can leave her grief-stricken or remorseful. 668 698 765
Abilities & Skills
Chief-Level Travel Cultivation
Hong Ying was one of the foremost Travel Cultivators of her era. Her exceptional stamina allows her to use high-consumption techniques more freely than ordinary cultivators. 274 668
- Trample Ten Thousand Rivers — Delivers devastating stomps capable of scattering formations, collapsing terrain, and killing large groups of enemies. She can use it repeatedly in succession. 626 731 813
- Unimpeded Travel — Passes through solid obstacles; Hong Ying has demonstrated a level capable of moving through a mountain body. 626
- Carefree and Unrestrained — Used to evade projectiles, weapons, and complex battlefield attacks. 580 835
- Cut Path Opening Road — Breaks encirclements and can tear targets apart. 580 813
- Ride a Horse and Admire Flowers — A powerful movement-based killing technique that Hong Ying uses with unusual proficiency. 274 725
- Sudden Wind on Flat Ground — When combined with her steps, it lets her move faster than an opponent can visually track. 766
- Auspiciousness and Avoiding Calamity — Enables her to sense danger and locate allies in hazardous terrain. 814
Technique Lending
As Li Banfeng's Home Spirit, Hong Ying can serve as a medium for his Deep Mansion technique, allowing him to borrow her Travel Cultivator skills when she agrees. 317
- Li Banfeng borrowed her Unimpeded Travel to infiltrate the Mountain Pulling Master's residence. 317
- Her step patterns allow Li Banfeng to perform Hundred Steps Horizontal and Vertical with a far higher success rate than he can achieve alone. 668
- Her skill is difficult to imitate because much of her judgment is instinctive rather than explainable. 668
Battlefield Command and Formation Breaking
Hong Ying excels at reading immediate battlefield conditions and exploiting weak or incomplete formations.
- Identified hurried enemy deployments and avoided charging into an improperly formed but still dangerous formation. 782
- Broke a foreign chariot formation through direct use of Trample Ten Thousand Rivers, Carefree and Unrestrained, and Cut Path Opening Road. 580
- Recognized that the Bandit Suppression Army's inexperienced soldiers could be thrown into chaos by explosives and sudden changes of direction. 782
- Protected Song Zhu during a retreat and acted decisively amid the confusion of the battlefield. 783
Reconstructed Body
Hong Ying's body has gradually regrown from her spear-form existence.
- She first grew hands and feet, later hair, flesh, and restored eyes. 304 307 462
- Her spear-form body remains a vulnerability: when the spearhead rusted, her movement and bodily control were impaired. 829
- She cannot teach Li Banfeng the method of growing flesh, despite being able to regrow her own body. 439
Cantaloupe Doubles
Li Banfeng can use Hong Ying's blood in conjunction with his Golden House Hides Beauty technique to create living cantaloupe duplicates modeled after her. 410 424
- The doubles possess formidable strength and can carry Strange Monsters or perform heavy labor. 424
- Li Banfeng used them to transport creatures and support territorial expansion. 410 424
- Hong Ying resents being treated as a source of expendable labor, particularly when her doubles are used without regard for her feelings. 424
Equipment
- Long spear — Her defining weapon and the core of her reconstructed form. 230 462
- Long sword — Used in close combat and to pin or disable enemies. 533 625
- Armor — A heavy suit she assembled from stored pieces; she wears it when preparing for serious combat. 323 327
- Arrowheads — Carried and handled during confrontations at Elbow Mountain. 625
Relationships
- Li Banfeng — Her Home Spirit host, whom she calls “Seventh Son.” She teaches him Travel Cultivator techniques, lends him abilities through Deep Mansion, and fights alongside him. 317 668 725
- Zhao Xiaowan — Former battlefield rival whose death Hong Ying caused; they now reside in the Portable Abode and cooperate closely in battle despite frequent hostility and arguments. 409 626 814
- Prince Chun — Former fiancé. Hong Ying was betrothed to him during the war, but later killed him. 255 256
- Ninth Girl — A recurring rival within the Portable Abode. Their disputes have escalated into destructive fights, though they also cooperate during crises. 664 782
- A-Yi — A battlefield partner during the Bandit Suppression War; Hong Ying carried her into enemy camps while A-Yi used explosives. 781 782
- Jiuer — A frequent battlefield companion whose formation knowledge complements Hong Ying's direct assault style. 782 828
- The Peddler — Hong Ying once intended to surrender to him after killing Zhao Xiaowan, believing it might save herself and the soldiers under her command. 409
