Background / History

Tony was refining the portable Mark V armor while suffering from palladium poisoning caused by his Arc Reactor. The reactor kept shrapnel near his heart in place, but its palladium gradually poisoned him; he was attempting to find a replacement element before his condition became fatal 785.

Tao Yu contacted Tony with a smartphone design proposal and later met him in New York amid attacks involving zombies and gunmen. Tony intervened as Iron Man, had Tao Yu and his companions released through his lawyers, and brought them to Stark Tower 785 786. After Tao Yu stabilized his condition, Tony accepted the reality of supernatural powers and began treating Tao Yu as both a friend and an exceptionally gifted student 786 787.
