Background / History

The current Jade Emperor is Zhang Xiaoyu, a youthful consciousness burdened by the legacy of Haotian. Haotian is described as both his deepest state of mind and Haotian's final will, binding the Jade Emperor to the task of preserving the Heavenly Court's order. The old Celestial Lord refers to him as the “Uncarved Jade” who was found to occupy this role. 313 606

For eight thousand years, the Jade Emperor has repeatedly lost consciousness and memories. Each collapse produces a new iteration that must reconstruct its identity through jade slips, paintings, diaries, and records left behind by previous selves. Great Master Xuan Du alone knows that this cycle had already occurred 637 times by the time of the tribulation. 316 333

Despite his instability, he remains in the Soaring Heavens Palace because the Heavenly Court functions as a prison restraining dangerous immortals and gods. Xuan Du and Taiyi Salvation Heavenly Venerate protect him while he balances the Judicial faction, the Eight Divisions, and the competing powers of the Four Imperators. 316 322

Appearance

In his current incarnation, Zhang Xiaoyu is a young man whose demeanor can shift sharply between open, youthful curiosity and the majesty expected of the Jade Emperor. In formal court, he wears a jade crown and is often obscured by a jade curtain, clouds, or flowing divine light. 313 334

The Jade Emperor is compassionate, curious, and far less detached than his title suggests. He is excited by news of Qi WuHuo's achievements, wishes to visit the mortal realm personally, and is deeply affected after witnessing the names of the dead from the Jin Province Rebellion. 334 353

His repeated memory loss has made him cautious and isolated. After reading the records left by his prior selves, he realizes that many immortals and gods cannot be trusted; nevertheless, he refuses to surrender the Six Realms to them. 333 355 448

He gradually develops a more active and ruthless political outlook. Rather than merely preserving the Heavenly Court's decaying balance, he considers rebelling against its existing order and rebuilding it with the legitimacy and resources of the Jade Emperor's throne. 355
