Background / History
East King Duke was born from Innate Pure Yang One Qi. After Dao Ancestor Hongjun appointed him the Head of Male Immortals, he established a Dao Court on Penglai Immortal Island and gathered rogue cultivators from the Four Seas. Though ambitious, he understood that his followers alone were insufficient to contend for supremacy in the Primordial World. 28
He sought the support of Queen Mother of the West, his counterpart as Head of Female Immortals, but she initially refused to join his Dao Court while focusing on cultivation. East King Duke regarded her aid as essential to strengthening his prospects against the Primordial World's greater powers. 28
The Four Seas Dragon Clan later pledged allegiance to Purple Mansion Continent, offering to manage the Four Seas and its aquatic peoples in East King Duke's name. He accepted their cooperation but refused a subordinate's suggestion to seize their Water Element Authority, arguing that breaking his promise of autonomy would discourage other groups from joining him. 167 174
Dao Ancestor Hongjun subsequently entrusted East King Duke with the Immortal Dao Golden Book and made him responsible for Purple Mansion and the Dao Court's administration of the Mystic Gate Immortal Path. This office gave Purple Mansion Continent a means to gather and register independent immortals. 180
Appearance
East King Duke is depicted as a dignified divine being with white or silver hair and a regal bearing. He commonly appears in purple robes, reflecting his position as master of Purple Mansion Continent. 28 174 183
- Purple qi Daoist robes or a purple imperial robe 28 183
- White hair, at times worn beneath a golden crown 28 183
- Light-purple irises during the final conflict with the Demon Clan 210
- Often carries the Pure Yang Limitless Sword and Dragon Head Cane 183 184
Personality
East King Duke is intensely ambitious, desiring not merely a regional domain but the qualification to contend for the Heavenly Emperor's position. He recognizes the danger of this ambition and the overwhelming strength of the Primordial World's hidden powers, yet refuses to abandon his pursuit of the Great Dao. 28 183 210
He is calculating and politically pragmatic. He recruits rogue immortals, cultivates the Dragon Clan alliance, and uses the Golden Book to consolidate Purple Mansion Continent's influence. He also understands that allies must be treated reliably: despite distrusting the Dragon Clan's commitment, he refuses to revoke the autonomy he promised them. 90 174 189
His ambition can become ruthless. To obtain Old Ancestor Hongyun's Primordial Violet Qi, he arranges an ambush and is willing to discard the integrity expected of an Innate Divine Being. 183 Following his defeat, however, he accepts responsibility for his loss, yields his office to Di Jun, and submits to the destruction of his cultivation. 212 213
