Background / History

Jiraiya traveled through many countries searching for the person prophesied to bring peace to the Ninja World. During those travels, he encountered Ye Fan after the young Uchiha descendant escaped Konoha following the destruction of his clan. Jiraiya took him in and raised him for roughly ten years. 3 45

Although Ye Fan could not condense chakra or practice conventional ninjutsu, Jiraiya trained him in taijutsu and continually searched for a way to let him cultivate ninjutsu. After witnessing Ye Fan kill Manda, Jiraiya identified him as the prophesied child and resolved to help develop his abilities further. 1 25

Jiraiya later received the Turtle School manual from Ye Fan. Its martial arts and chakra-circulation methods gave him techniques beyond his prior repertoire, which he also taught openly to Naruto and Rock Lee. 76 81

Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall, middle-aged man with long, white hair, often described as spiky. 1 27 32

  • In Sage Mode, red markings appear around his eyes. 179
  • Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima stand on his shoulders while he uses Sage Mode. 84
  • His frequent bathhouse voyeurism repeatedly leaves him bruised, swollen, or marked by slaps. 1

Personality

Jiraiya combines an unserious, lecherous public demeanor with exceptional resolve in battle. He claims that peeping at women is “research” for his writing, yet readily accepts punishment for it and remains shamelessly persistent. 1 35

When others are threatened, he is decisive and protective. He openly defies Danzō's attempt to have Ye Fan executed, refuses to abandon Naruto during Pain's attack, and is willing to die defending Mount Myōboku's surviving young toads. 11 83 179

As a teacher, Jiraiya is generous with knowledge and deeply invested in his students' futures. He regrets Nagato's fall, recognizes Naruto's growth, and places unwavering trust in Ye Fan even when Ye Fan chooses to release Orochimaru. 50 81 82 88

Abilities & Skills

Taijutsu and Combat Experience

Jiraiya is an experienced close-range fighter whose physical skill remains dangerous even without ninjutsu.

  • Subdued seven or eight Root operatives in a few moves without using ninjutsu. 11
  • Defeated rebel Jōnin with single punches during Konoha's rebellion. 49
  • Uses precise timing and battlefield analysis, such as predicting Shukaku's escape from Yellow Spring Swamp before launching Great Fireball. 33

Sage Mode and Sage Art

Jiraiya can enter Sage Mode with the aid of Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima, drawing on Sage Chakra for stronger techniques and enhanced perception.

  • Uses Sage Mode to save Tsunade and immediately destroys the Asura Path with one punch. 84
  • Detects attacks and analyzes Pain's shared vision while fighting several Paths simultaneously. 84
  • Uses Sage Art: Fire Style — Elder Fire, combining fire, wind, and oil; the Preta Path can absorb it. 84
  • His Sage Mode can become nearly depleted in prolonged battles, as seen during the defense of Mount Myōboku. 179

Toad Summoning

Jiraiya maintains strong contracts and battlefield coordination with the toads of Mount Myōboku.

  • Gamabunta — Pinned Shukaku down, severed its limbs, and combined with Jiraiya for Fire Style: Toad Oil Flame Bullet. 32 33
  • Gamaken — Defended Naruto and Jiraiya, fought summoned beasts, and protected the casino village from Pain's Hell Hound. 82 83
  • Gamahiro — Joined Gamabunta and Katsuyu against Pain. 83
  • Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima — Supply Sage Chakra, coordinate elemental Sage Art, and assist with the Kamehameha Wave. 84 85

Ninjutsu and Hair Techniques

Jiraiya uses varied elemental, defensive, and restraining ninjutsu.

  • Earth Style: Yellow Spring Swamp — Immobilizes targets in a rapidly sinking swamp. 33
  • Earth Style: Earth Flow Wall — Raises a defensive earth barrier against Shukaku's Wind Style: Void Bullet. 33
  • Fire Style: Great Fireball / Dragon Fire — Pressures and encircles Shukaku with fire attacks. 33
  • Wild Lion's Mane Technique — Uses his hair to restrain Shukaku. 33
  • Needle Jizō / Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon — Hardens or launches his hair for defense and offense. 46 85
  • Toad Mouth Binding Technique — Traps Danzō in a fleshy wall. 44
  • Toad Pouch Prison — Summons a prison to confine multiple Paths of Pain. 85

Rasengan

Jiraiya employs Rasengan variants as decisive finishing attacks.

  • Used a Rasengan to knock Gaara unconscious and force Shukaku back into the jinchūriki's body. 34
  • Killed the Human Path with a Super Giant Ball Rasengan inside the Toad Pouch Prison. 85
  • Used Big Ball Rasengan to destroy the Hell Path after blinding the Pains. 86

Turtle School Techniques

After studying Ye Fan's manual, Jiraiya incorporates martial arts techniques outside conventional ninjutsu.

  • Sky Dance Technique — Grants aerial mobility, allowing him to evade Pain's attacks. 84
  • Kamehameha Wave — An azure energy beam formed from chakra and Sage Chakra; not regarded by Jiraiya as ninjutsu. 85
  • Solar Flare — Produces an intense flash that temporarily blinds Pain within a fifty-meter radius. 86

Relationships

  • Ye Fan — Disciple and surrogate son. Jiraiya took him in after his escape from Konoha, taught him taijutsu, defended him from Danzō, and trusts him even when others fear him. 3 11 50
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Student. Jiraiya accepts Naruto for training, protects him against Pain, and praises his growing control over the Nine-Tails' power. 35 83 88
  • Rock Lee — Student during the search for Tsunade; Jiraiya teaches him Turtle School methods alongside Naruto. 80 81
