Background / History

Hatred toward Ye Fan and Itachi

After the Uchiha clan's destruction, Sasuke blames both Uchiha Itachi and Ye Fan. He accepts the rumor that Ye Fan was the Uchiha clan's “Plague God” and adds him to his list of targets when Ye Fan returns to Konoha. His first response is to activate his Two-Tomoe Sharingan and attempt to kill Ye Fan, even threatening Naruto for intervening. 3

Ye Fan defeats him effortlessly, criticizing Sasuke's speed, strength, and attack patterns. The loss damages Sasuke's pride, particularly because Ye Fan is an Uchiha without a Kekkei Genkai. 4 5

Chunin Exam and Orochimaru

During the Chunin Exam, Sasuke recognizes that Orochimaru is impersonating Naruto, but Orochimaru's aura leaves him unable to move. He briefly tries to buy his team's survival with the Heaven Scroll and is condemned by Naruto as a coward. 17 18 19

The humiliation and memories of Itachi's massacre allow Sasuke to overcome his paralysis. He attacks Orochimaru with kunai, explosive tags, steel wires, and Fire Style tactics while using the Sharingan to predict his opponent's movements. 19

Repeated defeats and family reunion

Witnessing Ye Fan overwhelm Orochimaru leaves Sasuke convinced that his revenge is hopeless unless he gains supreme power. 22 His first direct attack on Itachi with Chidori ends with both arms broken and 360 hours of Tsukuyomi forcing him to relive the Uchiha massacre. 74

When the revived, Orochimaru-controlled Fugaku nearly kills him, Sasuke is saved by Shisui. Fugaku is later freed through Kotoamatsukami and embraces Sasuke, giving father and son a brief reunion. 146

Ryūchi Cave and Loki's power

Unable to tolerate Naruto and Ye Fan's growth, Sasuke secretly leaves Konoha after his Cursed Seal directs him toward Ryūchi Cave. Sakura tries to stop him, but he knocks her unconscious, binds her, and continues alone. 204

At Ryūchi Cave, Orochimaru and Kabuto bring him before Loki. Loki recognizes Sasuke's need to prove himself against Itachi and grants him immense foreign energy, awakening Sasuke's Mangekyo Sharingan in the process. In exchange, Sasuke is ordered to seek anything containing the Power of Time. 206

Challenge to Ye Fan

Sasuke returns to Konoha consumed by confidence, insults Kaguya, challenges Ye Fan, and dismisses Madara as an obsolete remnant. He places all seven Great Tailed Beasts under genjutsu, then attacks Ye Fan with seven Tailed Beast Bombs; Ye Fan disperses the attack and sends him flying with a slap. 208 209

Refusing to yield, Sasuke summons his Perfect Susanoo and charges Ye Fan. Hashirama, Madara, Tobirama, and Nagato restrain him before he can break free. When Fugaku and Mikoto beg Ye Fan for mercy, Ye Fan spares him. 210 211

Personality

Sasuke is driven by revenge, pride, and an obsessive need to prove that he is not weaker than Itachi, Naruto, or Ye Fan. His hatred toward Ye Fan stems from the “Plague God” rumor, while his hatred of Itachi stems from the Uchiha massacre. 3 22

His courage is inconsistent: Orochimaru's aura initially reduces him to paralysis and desperation, but Naruto's accusation of cowardice pushes him to fight back. 17 19 He repeatedly chooses dangerous paths to power, including considering Orochimaru's offer and following the Cursed Seal to Ryūchi Cave. 20 204
