Background / History
The Void Blade Sect is Qingzhou's leading sect of the Blade Dao. Its headquarters is saturated with dense Blade Qi, and its disciples are described as feeling like blades within a practitioner’s perception. At its center stands the ten-thousand-foot Heavenly Blade sculpture, whose saber intent tests visitors’ will and Blade Path potential. 266 277
The sect possesses the Void Soul Battlefield, an ancient battlefield-secret realm where battle souls continually arise and perish. It normally admits only core disciples and certain elders; outsiders historically gain entry only by paying an immense price. 266 267
During the great righteous-demonic war thousands of years ago, the sect's eighth-generation Grand Elder, the Eight Absolutes Elder, perished within the battlefield. His battle soul and inheritance—including the Eight Absolutes Blade Scripture and Thought Blade—remained connected to the realm. 273 287
The sect later lost the complete Eight Absolutes Blade Scripture, retaining only the Thought Blade inheritance. Because the scripture is tied to the creator's Martial Dao, it holds exceptional value to the sect's direct disciples, while other practitioners cannot unleash its true King-level power. 273
Sect Grounds and Assets
Heavenly Blade Plaza
The Heavenly Blade sculpture serves as a test and tempering ground for saber practitioners.
- Only a small number of Void Blade Sect saber geniuses can sense its Saber Qi; fewer still are stopped by its pressure. 279
- The trial is fundamentally a contest of will rather than cultivation, physique, soul foundation, or Martial Dao Realm. 283
- Reaching one thousand zhang is regarded as evidence of potential to become a Blade Dao Venerable. 283 285
- Crossing the full two thousand zhang to the sect’s main hall signifies that, barring premature death, one is destined to become a Blade Path Venerable. 286
- The statue’s enduring will is an application of Thought Blade and has persisted for tens of thousands of years. 283
Void Soul Battlefield
The Void Soul Battlefield is a vast, isolated secret realm controlled by the sect.
- It contains dangerous War Souls, Soul Beasts, and complete laws, allowing survivors to sharpen their Martial Dao Realm. 266 294 297
- Entrants cannot contact the outside world or leave until the battlefield opens again. This isolation makes deaths within difficult to investigate. 283
- Participants are randomly teleported upon entry and instructed to regroup at the Tianlun Mountain Range after a period of exploration. 293 294
- The sect may possess means to help its own disciples reunite or avoid separation after teleportation. 294
Void Heaven Palace
The Void Heaven Palace is a top-grade Saint Weapon and the sect’s principal objective within the Void Soul Battlefield. 350 353
- The sect opened the battlefield and invited outside factions largely to borrow their strength in overcoming its guardian battle souls. 273
- Participants swore Heavenly Oaths requiring the palace’s return to the Void Blade Sect regardless of who obtained it. 350
- The sect’s interest may extend beyond the Saint Weapon itself, as the palace is suspected of being a key to a Cave Heaven. 350 352
- After Qiao Qinglu’s death, the ownerless palace was temporarily secured by Lu Yang and was still required to be returned to the sect. 373 374
Martial Arts and Inheritances
Thought Blade
Thought Blade is the Void Blade Sect’s signature saber art and the foundation of its standing in Qingzhou. It is an illusory technique centered on thought and will. 287
- Practitioners with a will “like a blade” are suited to cultivate its inheritance and may possess the potential to reach the Venerable Tier. 287
- The Heavenly Blade sculpture demonstrates an enduring application of Thought Blade through its saber intent. 283
- The Eight Absolutes Elder’s heritage within the Void Soul Battlefield includes Thought Blade. 273 287
- Lu Yang later used an incomplete Thought Blade technique for Spiritual Sense attacks. 404 465
Eight Absolutes Blade Scripture
The Eight Absolutes Blade Scripture was created by the Eight Absolutes Elder and is considered a King-level top-rank blade technique with power comparable to a half-step Venerable-tier art. 273
- It was called the foremost blade technique below the Venerable Tier in its era. 273
- Its full power is reserved for those inheriting or following the creator’s Martial Dao; others can generally draw only Heaven-grade top-rank-level strength from it. 273
- The Eight Absolutes War Souls employed the scripture against Lu Yang within the Void Heaven Palace. 373
Blood Devouring Spirit
Blood Devouring Spirit is a secret Demonic Dao Blood Path technique passed down privately among Void Blade Sect Masters during succession crises. 292
- It devours another person’s potential to enhance the user’s talent. 292 293
- The previous Sect Master used it to transfer more than half of his potential to Song Taichong, allowing Song to obtain King-level talent and eventually become Sect Master. 292
- Song Taichong secretly taught it to Qiao Qinglu, ordering him under a Heavenly Oath to use it only once, against Lu Yang. 292 293
- Public discovery of the technique would threaten the sect’s standing among Qingzhou’s righteous factions. 292
Leadership and Members
- Song Taichong — Current Sect Master and a Blade Path King. He sought a successor capable of preserving the sect’s status, attempted to recruit Lu Yang after witnessing his Heavenly Blade trial, and later plotted to have Qiao Qinglu devour Lu Yang’s potential. 279 286 292 293
- Qiao Qinglu — Song Taichong’s trusted disciple and a Sub-King-level leader of the sect’s Void Soul Battlefield expedition. He accepted Blood Devouring Spirit, was later revealed to have been possessed by Eight Absolutes War Souls, and was killed by Lu Yang. 292 293 373
- Song Ziqing — Song Taichong’s daughter. She was sent to care for and entice Lu Yang after the sect attempted to recruit him. 290
- Great Expert Zhang — Sixth Realm sect expert who guided outside allies and helped lead the assault on the Void Heaven Palace. 350 352 353
- Eight Absolutes Elder — Eighth-generation Grand Elder, a half-step Venerable-tier figure and creator of the Eight Absolutes Blade Scripture. His battle soul and legacy became central to the Void Soul Battlefield expedition. 273 287
Story Role / Major Arcs
Opening of the Void Soul Battlefield
The Void Blade Sect publicly opened the Void Soul Battlefield and distributed entry quotas to major righteous factions, including Shanhetal, the Sword Mansion, the Hundred Families, and the Taibai Family. Its stated arrangement offered participants a share of other benefits, including the Azure Wood Longevity Scripture, while the sect sought aid against the battlefield’s powerful souls. 273
Lu Yang entered as Shanhetal’s representative to investigate the Void Heaven Palace. Upon arriving, he was halted by the Heavenly Blade’s Saber Qi and ultimately crossed the full Heavenly Blade Plaza, exposing Venerable-tier Blade Path potential. 266 277 285 286
Recruitment Attempt and Confinement
Song Taichong initially regarded Lu Yang as a threat, then shifted to overt praise and recruitment after recognizing his potential. The sect delayed the battlefield’s opening, effectively preventing invited representatives from leaving or communicating with their factions while providing them with VIP treatment. 286 287
After Lu Yang rejected recruitment, Song Taichong used Song Ziqing and sect resources in a further attempt to draw him in. When this failed, Song secretly ordered Qiao Qinglu to use Blood Devouring Spirit against him. 290 292 293
Void Heaven Palace Expedition
The sect organized outside participants for a joint assault on the Void Heaven Palace, intending to claim the top-grade Saint Weapon under their prior Heavenly Oaths. 350
Its forces could not clear the route into the inner palace alone and requested outside aid against the Soul Beast tide. 352 Tensions worsened when Great Expert Zhang attempted to dictate Lu Yang’s role against the palace’s guardian beast souls. 354
Within the palace, the group discovered the Eight Absolutes War Souls’ possession scheme. Qiao Qinglu had already been completely possessed for years and had refined the Void Heaven Palace as his Saint Weapon. 373
Aftermath
Lu Yang killed Qiao Qinglu and destroyed the remaining Eight Absolutes War Souls, ending their control over the Void Heaven Palace. 373 Although the expedition damaged the sect’s reputation among its allies, the surviving parties agreed that the Void Blade Sect members still had to be rescued as fellow righteous-path cultivators. 374
Trivia
- The sect’s name is rendered as 虚刀宗 in the original text.
- Lu Yang considered joining the Void Blade Sect before Wu Shentong recruited him into Shanhetal. 266 277 290
- The sect’s desperation for a successor stems partly from Song Taichong’s own limited talent: he reached King level only at age 418. 279
