The Bleach World Shazo's development demonstrates the transition from an ordinary soul to a Death God capable of reshaping the realms.

Nature and Terminology

Bleach World

• Spiritual bodies: Death Gods and Hollows are spiritual beings. Their battle wounds result from clashes between the participants' soul powers 204.
• No natural lifespan limit: Shazo states that Death Gods age because of limitations in their strength or because they think of themselves as old—not because of a fixed natural lifespan 429.
• Unequal individual strength: Becoming a Death God does not imply captain-level power. The gap between individual rookies can exceed the gap between ordinary humans and Death Gods 420.
• Potential beyond ordinary limits: Bankai is not the endpoint of Death God power. Aizen's later evolution includes reabsorbing his Zanpakuto into his body 431 447.

Ninja World

• Unified authority, divided manifestations: The Ninja World's Death God is described as having split into several thousand Death Gods while retaining unified divine authority. The same account describes dozens jointly administering the law of death 233.
• Powerful collectively, limited individually: Their administration of death is precise and formidable enough to frighten Shazo, but individual manifestations are weak, rigid, and almost incapable of thought 233.
• Emotionless operation: They do not regard being captured and sealed by the Uzumaki Clan as blasphemy, and their confinement does not interrupt their duties 233.
• Balance and exchange: Souls held by a Death God can be obtained through an exchange that follows the law of death 233.

Distinction from Other Death Deities

• Marvel's Death is a separate cosmic deity: She is identified as one of the creation-level Five Great Beings. Asgard also has its own goddess of death 502.
• Possessing Death God power does not automatically grant that office: Marvel Shazo wields such power but postpones establishing a Pure Land because death already has powerful rulers in his world 502.
• Soul cultivation is not equivalent to divine authority: Shazo speculates that the Samsara Salvation Sutra could let the dead become conscious, incorporeal beings resembling Death Gods without granting the Ninja World's authority over death 299.

Appearance

• Black uniform: Naruto Shazo's Spirit of the Shinigami technique forms a black Shinigami uniform around his manifested, solidified soul 31.
• Zanpakuto: These weapons are recognizable signs of Bleach World's Death Gods. The Visored's Zanpakuto identify them as Death Gods despite their unfamiliar clothing and Hollow-like presence 442.

Abilities & Skills

Soul Guidance and Perception

• Death Gods collect souls in the World of the Living and practice guiding them 200 202.
• Knowledge shared by Shinigami Xiazhuo includes handling souls and traveling between worlds 28.
• Naruto Shazo's temporary Spirit of the Shinigami state makes physical barriers translucent to his sight and reveals living souls as flames. He locates Naruto through intervening buildings at a distance of eighty meters 31.

Mental Investigation

• Death Gods possess procedures for entering and investigating living minds 28 31.
• Their standard method avoids direct contact between minds, reducing the danger of the subject's soul collapsing or the investigator encountering lethal mental hazards 31.
• These safeguards were developed over thousands of years after investigations killed both subjects and Death Gods 31.

Spiritual Pressure and Durability

• An attack wounds a spiritual body when its spiritual pressure overcomes the defender's. Both powers remain involved at the wound 204.
• Captain-level Death Gods possess exceptional vitality. Kaname Tōsen can remain alive under wounds expected to kill him only after a year or longer 435.
• Spiritual bodies remain vulnerable to specialized enemies: powerful Quincy can seize the spirit particles composing a Death God's body 450.

Zanpakuto and Releases

• A Zanpakuto reflects its owner's soul; its abilities crystallize that Death God's individual traits 447.
• Bankai is the second release after Shikai and the Zanpakuto's final form. It produces a qualitative increase in spiritual pressure and generally provides five to ten times the combat strength of Shikai 424.
• Zanpakuto release is not a universal measure of strength. Aizen observes that Kenpachi possesses spiritual pressure at Bankai's limits without having mastered Shikai 433.
• Aizen's evolution demonstrates a further possibility: merging with the Zanpakuto and reclaiming the soul traits separated into it 447.

Combat and Kido

• The four principal disciplines identified are swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, Kido, and movement. Yamamoto is described as having mastered all four 444.
• Healing spiritual injuries requires selecting and combining arts for the particular powers involved. Identical-looking wounds cannot necessarily be treated by the same formula 204.
• Healing therefore depends on the wound's current condition rather than a single fixed Kido spell 204.

Spirit-Particle Construction

• Death Gods can gather airborne spirit particles and solidify them into building materials 436.
• Large repairs remain exhausting: repeatedly rebuilding the Eleventh Division's damaged grounds drives the Tenth Division members to the point of coughing blood 436.

Organizations and Duties

Reaper Death Seal and Soul Exchange

Eighteen Ninja World Death Gods were captured by the Uzumaki Clan and sealed within the masks in Nohmen Hall. These manifestations supply the power behind the Reaper Death Seal 233.

Minato Namikaze and the Yin half of the Nine-Tails remained inside a Death God's stomach for twelve years. During that confinement, Minato won over the Nine-Tails and turned their former hostility into friendship 233.

After mastering shared Death God power and transforming his own soul into spirit particles, Naruto Shazo became able to sense and communicate with the Ninja World's Death Gods. Rather than exploiting a loophole to steal Minato's soul, he exchanged the souls of four death-row convicts for it; the Yin Nine-Tails was released alongside Minato. Orochimaru then used Impure World Reincarnation to restore Minato to an active body 233.

New Three-Realm Order

Shazo's reconstruction changes both the setting and the intended responsibilities of Death Gods: Hell is restored, while Soul Society and fragments of Hueco Mundo become the Spirit Realm. Shunsui Kyōraku becomes Captain-Commander 465.
