Power Progression
Superman's growth is demonstrated through combat rather than named cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established Superman | 391 | Introduced as Earth's undisputed strongest being. Freezes an entire burning forest in five seconds while deliberately limiting the cooling rate to protect survivors. |
| Combat-driven awakening | 404 | His first sustained battle against a comparable opponent, General Zod, forces him to exert himself fully. His strength rapidly increases as the fight moves between Gotham and orbit. |
| Further growth during the final duel | 406 | Continues improving while fighting Zod. Their physical attacks reshape rocky terrain, and their heat vision cuts channels of lava more than a hundred meters wide. |
| Surpasses General Zod | 406 | Zod reaches the limit of his engineered genes while Superman continues growing. After two hours of fighting, Superman feels no fatigue and can overpower him; Zod attributes the difference to the potential of natural birth. |
Background
Superman was naturally conceived by Jor-El and his wife, defying Krypton's system of assigning genetically engineered citizens specific roles. Jor-El stole the Codex containing the genetic records of billions of Kryptonians, merged it into his son's body, and sent him to Earth before Krypton's destruction 395.
Raised as Clark Kent by human adoptive parents, he considers himself an Earthling rather than an outsider. His adoptive father's death helped shape his willingness to sacrifice himself for justice and peace. He later becomes an intern reporter at the Daily Planet while protecting Metropolis and undertaking rescues worldwide, except in the great nation in the East 391 395.
Appearance
- Costume: A standard red-and-blue suit 395.
- Cape: Worn in combat; Zod grabs it to hurl him across Gotham 404.
- Heat vision: His eyes redden before releasing the attack 405.
Personality
Superman refuses to dismiss lives as hopeless merely because rescue cannot solve every problem. When Shazo questions the value of saving Gotham residents likely to die later from poverty, drugs, or violence, he answers that every additional day offers hope—and that even saving a minority permanently is worthwhile 391.
His restraint extends to enemies. Once he becomes strong enough to control Zod, he resists killing him, believing a contained opponent deserves an opportunity to reflect. He likewise holds back heavily against Batman, despite Batman's repeated attempts to kill him 406 410 411.
His kindness coexists with overconfidence and rigid self-imposed rules. He assumes Antarctica can safely conceal everything important, neglects precautions around Lois and Martha, and refuses to break the law even as circumstances deteriorate. After Shazo exposes these mistakes, Clark acknowledges that his principles failed to protect his loved ones and that he ultimately broke those rules anyway 408 411.
He is not immune to fear, guilt, or anger. His inability to protect Gotham briefly drives him toward destroying the Kryptonian ship, while Doomsday's defeat of him undermines his confidence in his own invincibility 405 417.
Abilities & Skills
Superhuman Strength and Durability
His physical power makes conventional restraints and weapons largely ineffective.
- Easily tears apart titanium-alloy handcuffs and reshapes the fragments by hand 395.
- States that he can push trains and withstand armor-piercing rounds 395.
- Exchanges blows with Zod powerful enough to reshape terrain 406.
- Remains largely beyond Batman's ability to injure even after kryptonite powder weakens him 410 411.
- Can survive lava, polar conditions, the deep sea, and outer space 395.
Flight and Super Speed
Superman can travel at extreme speed and change his velocity with exceptional precision.
- Approaches Shazo at high altitude and stops so quickly that the deceleration is nearly imperceptible 395.
- Crosses 300 kilometers in a few seconds when Metropolis faces nuclear firestorms 400.
- Can act far faster than Batman can perceive; his restraint is what allows their confrontation to continue 411.
Super Vision and Hearing
His senses support both large-scale surveillance and distant rescues.
- Describes vision that sees through objects and hearing that reaches across half the planet 395.
- Hears cries for help in Gotham and travels there to rescue survivors 391.
- Observes the nuclear explosions threatening Metropolis without being blinded by their flashes 400.
- Detects the Kryptonians' renewed offensive and identifies their ability to fly without aircraft 402.
Heat Vision
Superman projects destructive beams from his eyes.
- His exchanges with Zod carve broad channels of lava into the ground 406.
- Shoots through Doomsday's leg to stop its advance into Gotham 414.
- Cannot penetrate Doomsday's fourth-resurrection cocoon; later, Doomsday explicitly demonstrates immunity to the attack 414 416.
- Abruptly stopping an attack after Shazo blocks his eyes causes him substantial pain and leaves steam rising from them 405.
Freezing Breath
His breath can rapidly extinguish fires and freeze targets.
- Freezes a burning forest in five seconds, slowing the cooling to avoid harming people inside 391.
- Extinguishes two nuclear plasma fireballs and freezes a third over Metropolis 400.
- Freezes Doomsday's arms, making them brittle enough to crack when the monster smashes the ice away 415.
- His maximum effort against the nuclear firestorms exhausts him so severely that he can barely remain airborne 400.
Combat Growth
Real combat unlocks strength that his previously effortless victories left undeveloped.
- Before fighting Zod, he has never needed formal training or sustained combat against an equal 404.
- His strength continues increasing after Zod's engineered potential reaches its limit 406.
- Greater strength does not guarantee victory: Doomsday matches him through flexibility, then knocks him unconscious with hundreds of heat-vision beams 416.
Weaknesses and Limitations
| Weakness | Effect |
|---|---|
| Green kryptonite | Severely reduces his strength and defenses and causes intense pain. Superman describes it as worse than exposure to Krypton's environment 408. |
| Kryptonian environment | The airship's simulated conditions weaken him enough for Kryptonian soldiers to overwhelm him. Zod later estimates the reduction at at least half his strength 396 405. |
| Exhaustion | Extreme exertion can leave him temporarily unable to continue fighting effectively 400. |
| Limited combat experience | Initially depends on overwhelming power rather than trained technique; Batman exploits his restraint to force a prolonged close-quarters fight 404 410. |
| Threats to loved ones | Luthor exploits his concern for Martha to send him against Batman 410. |
Relationships
- Shazo — Ally, critic, and protector. Shazo values Superman as a restraint on dangerous actors, rescues him from Zod, sabotages Batman's lethal weapon, and forces him to confront his own mistakes. Clark later thanks him for the improvement in his life 391 405 409 411 418.
- Batman / Bruce Wayne — Initially a fellow defender of Earth, later an attacker. Gotham's destruction intensifies Bruce's resentment, which Luthor's manipulation turns into an attempted killing. Shazo exposes how completely Batman relied on Superman's goodwill 402 404 409 411.
- Lois — Girlfriend. Clark initially protects her identity during his surrender, but their later public association helps Luthor identify his vulnerabilities. Her investigation and encouragement contribute to his decision to attend the hearing 395 408.
- Martha — Adoptive mother and trusted source of comfort. Her belief that people will stop fearing Clark if they understand him persuades him to attend the public hearing. Shazo secretly arranges her protection 408 409.
- Jor-El — Biological father. Conceives him naturally, places the Codex inside him, and sends him to Earth 395.
- General Zod — Enemy and fellow Kryptonian. Clark initially offers to help revive their people, then opposes Zod's plan to sacrifice Earth. Their final battle ends when Zod threatens human lives and forces Clark to kill him 395 396 406.
- Faora and the surviving Kryptonians — Former enemies who regard his opposition to Zod as betrayal. They later intervene alongside Shazo during Batman's attack and fight beside Superman against Doomsday 396 409 411 414.
- Lex Luthor — Manipulator behind the campaign against him. Exploits his relationships, public controversy, and a fabricated kidnapping to turn him against Batman 408 409 410 411.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Gotham Forest Rescue
Superman enters the depicted story by extinguishing a forest fire and rescuing people Shazo has chosen not to save. His explanation that survival itself preserves hope persuades Shazo that protecting Superman's moral character benefits both the world and himself. Batman responds differently, immediately considering how to discover and exploit Superman's weaknesses 391.
Kryptonian Invasion
When the Kryptonians demand Kal-El, Clark decides to surrender rather than risk Earth's destruction. Shazo intercepts him and advises him to conceal his human identity, collect kryptonite, and beware of Batman. Clark introduces himself to the Department of Defense as Kal-El and cooperates until officials attempt to control him, at which point he demonstrates the futility of their restraints 395.
Aboard Zod's ship, Clark initially agrees to help restore Kryptonian civilization. He withdraws that support upon learning that terraforming Earth would kill humanity and nearly all other life. The ship's environment weakens him, allowing Faora's soldiers to capture him 395 396.
During the ensuing war, Superman saves central Metropolis from nuclear firestorms but exhausts himself, leaving Shazo to destroy the World Engine. In the renewed offensive, he fights Zod in Gotham, where Zod deliberately attacks the city to prevent him from withdrawing 400 402 404.
Zod eventually traps him aboard the Kryptonian airship. Shazo breaches the hull to restore Clark's strength, then stops him from destroying the ship in anger. After Shazo negotiates the surviving Kryptonians' safety in exchange for Zod's life, Clark and Zod fight again. Clark surpasses him but only delivers the fatal blow when Zod threatens trapped humans with heat vision 405 406.
Luthor's Plot and Batman's Attack
Guilt leads Superman to bury Zod in Antarctica rather than allow Shazo to dispose of the corpse. He also stores collected kryptonite there. The body's theft exposes the danger of relying on a single supposedly inaccessible hiding place 408.
Luthor exploits Clark's increasingly public relationship with Lois and manufactures a controversy around his intervention in Africa. Clark agrees to attend a hearing, where a wheelchair bomb kills Senator June and hundreds of others. Batman blames Superman and prepares kryptonite weapons 408 409.
Believing Luthor has kidnapped Martha, Superman confronts Batman while repeatedly holding back. Batman weakens him with kryptonite powder and attempts to impale him, but the spearhead breaks: Catwoman has replaced it at Shazo's request. Shazo reveals that Martha is safe and confronts both men over their failures. Clark admits his negligence and vows to change 410 411.
Doomsday Battle
Superman joins the heroes and Kryptonians opposing Doomsday. He helps stop its rush toward Gotham, but neither his heat vision nor the combined attacks penetrate its evolutionary cocoon 414.
He and Batman delay an attack while civilians evacuate, allowing the creature to strengthen itself by feeding. When it begins eating people, Superman keeps fighting to draw it away from the crowds. His freezing breath creates an opening for the Kryptonians' spear attacks, but Doomsday repeatedly revives 415.
Doomsday eventually knocks him unconscious with massed heat vision. Witnessing Shazo overpower a still stronger version of the creature subsequently forces Clark to recognize that his own strength is neither absolute nor sufficient for every threat 416 417.
Public Rehabilitation
After Shazo's overwhelming display of power, American leaders recognize Superman's value as a benevolent counterweight. Hostile coverage disappears, and the media begins praising him as a moral exemplar 418.
Clark's reporting career flourishes through promotions, raises, and prominent coverage, while Martha obtains a loan and returns to farming. Clark deduces why their circumstances have improved and privately raises a glass toward Fantastic Forest to thank Shazo 418.
