Background / History

Konoha Career and Defection

Orochimaru was a civilian ninja whom Tobirama Senju assigned to Hiruzen Sarutobi. He became Sarutobi’s favorite student and was groomed for the Fourth Hokage position, with abilities and standing that surpassed those of his fellow Sannin at the time 105 136 141.

His human experimentation became central to his designation as a rogue ninja. Hiruzen described him as a murderer who harmed Konoha’s ninja. Orochimaru later denied killing any Konoha ninja and maintained that the village had approved his experiments and supplied their subjects. He also claimed that his departure involved a secret agreement with Konoha, but admitted he lacked evidence after Hiruzen’s death 105 140.

Away from Konoha, Orochimaru built Otogakure in the Land of Rice Paddies, investing his accumulated resources in its facilities and gifted young recruits. He joined Akatsuki but subsequently left after attempting to ambush Pain and seize the Rinnegan. Akatsuki hunted him afterward, while Jiraiya repeatedly tracked down his hideouts 135.

Capture and Return to Konoha

After becoming Fifth Hokage, Shazo ordered Shisui Uchiha to capture Orochimaru alive. Konoha’s coordinated search destroyed four of Orochimaru’s secret bases in seven days and eventually cornered him at Otogakure. He could not readily abandon the settlement: his resources were concentrated there, and Kimimaro depended on its equipment to survive 132 133 135.

Orochimaru resisted by summoning Hashirama and Tobirama through an improved but incomplete Impure World Reincarnation. Hashirama broke free of his control, and Orochimaru escaped his grasp before attempting to flee through snake-shedding techniques. Shisui caught him by casting genjutsu through a clone, exploiting the connection between Orochimaru’s damaged soul and his real body 135 136 137.

Shazo offered to restore Orochimaru’s jonin rank in exchange for research into ninjutsu, the human body, and chakra. Village-assigned projects would receive funding, while Orochimaru could pursue self-funded personal research and sell his findings to Konoha. Refusal meant execution as a rogue ninja. Orochimaru accepted, and the people taken from his base became Konoha ninja or Academy students 140.

Back in Konoha, he settled the former Otogakure children and reunited with Tsunade and Jiraiya. He quickly recognized that Shazo’s administration would not tolerate the independence Hiruzen had allowed the Sannin 141.

Intelligence Work and Research

Orochimaru supplied detailed intelligence on Akatsuki’s members, techniques, and vulnerabilities. Shazo then sent him to investigate Kirigakure and the masked space-time user. He returned with reports of the Fourth Mizukage’s campaign against bloodline clans and brought Yukimaru, a Yuki Clan boy with Ice Release potential, into Konoha 143 144 152.

Shazo reinforced Orochimaru’s ties to the village by assigning Sasuke as his apprentice, arranging a position for Kabuto, and having Tsunade treat Kimimaro. He also provided biotechnology and complete cloning blueprints, giving Orochimaru research opportunities beyond those available in Otogakure 188 191.

Orochimaru used cloned bodies to improve the sacrifices required for Impure World Reincarnation. His work supported the reanimation of Hashirama, Tobirama, Hiruzen, and Danzō, followed by Minato after Shazo recovered the Fourth Hokage’s soul from the Death God 197 198 233.

Shazo’s Konoha Crush Plan

Shazo tasked Orochimaru with provoking Sunagakure into attacking Konoha, creating grounds to seize Rōran and its Dragon Vein. Orochimaru initially identified Shazo’s overwhelming strength as the chief obstacle: Rasa needed a reason to believe an attack could succeed 186 188.

He solved this by posing as a dissatisfied subordinate and presenting himself as the leader of an anti-Hokage conspiracy. His complaints drew on genuine frustration over research funding and his lack of political authority. At Shazo’s request, he also contacted former elders Homura and Koharu to draw them into the supposed alliance 191 219.

During the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru staged an assassination attempt using explosive tags, snake techniques, and the Kusanagi Sword against Shazo’s cloned-body double. Rasa joined the assault, while Obito and Itachi were drawn into the apparent opportunity to kill the Fifth Hokage 197 224 225.

Afterward, Orochimaru defended the operation as a test that had exposed an ally’s treacherous intentions. He supported developing the captured Dragon Vein when Shazo proposed that it might permit travel to parallel worlds 230.

Dragon Vein Experiments

Orochimaru’s interference experiments brought a parallel-world Team 7—Naruto, Sakura, Sai, and Tenzo—into Konoha. He erased the memories of three members but could not erase Naruto’s. Shazo persuaded him to abandon further attempts on Naruto 299.

To study their return, Orochimaru placed the visitors in a sealing array and attached data-recording sealing bands. When the Dragon Vein activated, he used dozens of arrays, precision instruments, and electronic computers to record their gradual disappearance. The researchers still did not know how to activate the Dragon Vein’s time mechanism themselves 299 300 301.

During the wait, Orochimaru endorsed Shazo’s proposal to give Konoha a new goal: landing on the moon and eventually reaching the stars 300.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Orochimaru helped coordinate the Allied Shinobi Forces and later accompanied Shazo to intercept Nagato and a reanimated Six Paths Obito. Although he initially emphasized the difference between Kage-level and Six Paths-level power, Shazo exposed his concealed mastery of Sage Mode and absorption of the White Phosphorus Snake 323 351.

Using his Eight-Headed Serpent form, Orochimaru overwhelmed Obito, whose reanimated body could not fully sustain his borrowed power and no longer possessed Kamui. He then divided Obito into eight pieces and applied special seals that transferred control of the reincarnation to himself, preserving him as a research specimen 351 352.

Appearance

  • Serpentine pupils: His pupils contract into thin slits, and he fixes opponents with a snake-like stare 137 351.
  • Long, flexible tongue: He licks his cheek when frustrated and can even lick his own eyes 135 352.
  • Snake body: His actual body is found in snake form beneath bushes during Shisui’s capture operation 137.
  • Changeable host body: Continued use of Living Corpse Reincarnation results in him inhabiting a female body 194.
  • Eight-Headed Serpent: Assumes a massive, multiheaded serpent form in battle against Six Paths Obito 351.

Personality

Orochimaru is driven by research and the pursuit of immortality. Shazo regards him as a proud scientist and a seeker who uses chakra and science to approach that goal. Access to laboratories, equipment, and new knowledge is a stronger means of retaining his cooperation than force alone 141 188 191.

He is politically perceptive and skilled at manipulating expectations. He recognizes the practical implications of Shazo’s administrative reforms, warns Jiraiya about the message conveyed by his Mount Myōboku forehead protector, and exploits Rasa’s wishful thinking to sell a false rebellion 141 191.

His emotional attachments coexist with severe scientific detachment. He cares for the children he raised and delays a mission to verify that Shazo has not sent Jiraiya to his death. Conversely, he shows little sympathy for his reanimated teacher’s suffering and views the terrified Obito chiefly as valuable experimental material 141 144 184 352.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

A body-transfer secret technique developed by Orochimaru and used in his pursuit of immortality 135 191 194.

  • Body replacement: Allows him to change host bodies, including inhabiting a female body 194.
  • Soul damage: Its practice leaves his soul fragmented and wounded, allowing traces of its essence to leak into his clones 137.
  • Genjutsu vulnerability: Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu cast on a clone can follow its soul connection back to his real body. Closing the clone’s eyes does not protect him from Shisui’s technique 136 137.
  • Continued use: He does not immediately abandon it despite Shazo’s warning. Later, he acknowledges that Shazo has shown him a better path and rejects taking Sasuke’s body 194 234.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru substantially improves Tobirama’s forbidden reanimation technique, making it one of his principal research fields and trump cards 136 352.

  • Stronger reanimations: Uses special sacrifices containing Hashirama cells, then modified cloned bodies, to restore greater portions of the summoned ninja’s power 136 197.
  • Control modifications: Removes safeguards left by Tobirama, although Hashirama can still break free of the early version’s control 136.
  • Early instability: His incomplete version amplifies the reanimated ninja’s instinctive desires until they can overwhelm reason 137 138.
  • Sacrifice analysis: Examination of Tobirama’s discarded vessel establishes that the reanimation consumes the sacrifice’s chakra 185.
  • Advanced reproduction: Shazo identifies Orochimaru’s improved version as capable of reproducing the Rinnegan 332.
  • Control-seizing seals: Develops and tests seals that take ownership of another caster’s reanimated ninja, successfully using them on Six Paths Obito 352.

Snake Techniques and Survival

Orochimaru combines snake-based attacks with body-shedding methods designed to escape capture and injury 136 225.

  • Orochimaru-style Substitution Technique: A new, slime-covered body emerges from his mouth. Escaping Hashirama this way costs one quarter of his chakra 136.
  • Snake Shedding Clone Technique: Leaves behind a shriveled snakeskin while his real body escapes 136.
  • Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Transforms his hands into numerous venomous snake heads to restrict an opponent’s movement 225.
  • Snake reconnaissance: Retrieves memories from a small blue snake to confirm that Shisui and Kakashi have followed Jiraiya as backup 144.
  • Summoning expertise: Provides Shazo with the snake summoning contract scroll used to enter Ryūchi Cave 323.

Sage Mode and Eight-Headed Serpent Form

Orochimaru secretly masters Ryūchi Cave’s Sage Mode and devours the White Phosphorus Snake 351.

  • Concealed strength: Initially understates his ability against Six Paths Obito until Shazo reveals what he knows 351.
  • Multiheaded assault: Encircles Obito and attacks successively with eight serpent heads, reducing him to defending with the Rinnegan’s repulsive force 351.
  • Documented limit of the feat: His opponent is a weakened reanimation without Kamui, not Obito at unrestricted Six Paths strength 351.

Scientific and Technical Expertise

Orochimaru directs Konoha’s research into ninjutsu, physiology, and chakra 140 191.

  • Cloning: Produces a cloned body in two days and investigates its emotional dullness and slower reactions after Shazo’s double possesses it 197.
  • Genetic and physiological analysis: Tests Shazo’s blood, hair, organ function, and physical performance, finding individual measurements more than ten times the ordinary ninja average 191.
  • Space-time research: Designs large-scale recording systems to study the Dragon Vein and parallel-world travel 299 301.
  • Memory alteration: Erases the visiting Sakura, Sai, and Tenzo’s memories, but fails to do so with their Naruto 299.

Combat Analysis and Deception

  • Chakra perception: Detects the boundary of Shazo’s aura and deduces how he suppresses the genin’s auras without injuring them 197.
  • Akatsuki intelligence: Recreates members’ appearances with the Transformation Technique and explains their known abilities and weaknesses 143 144.
  • Coordinated ambushes: Combines vision-obscuring paper, explosive tags, snake restraints, and a sword thrust into a rapid assassination sequence 225.
  • Political manipulation: Uses truthful grievances to make his false betrayal convincing to Rasa 191.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — A double-edged straight sword summoned through a snake emerging from his mouth. Its blade extends to strike a distant target 225.
  • Explosive tags — Concealed among apparently ordinary documents for his staged attack on the Fifth Hokage 225.

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher who favored him and groomed him for the Hokage position. Orochimaru later thanks Shazo for his role in Hiruzen’s death and willingly reanimates his former teacher 105 141 186 197.
  • Tsunade — Classmate and fellow Sannin. Her efforts to treat Kimimaro help reconnect Orochimaru to Konoha 136 188.
  • Jiraiya — Classmate, fellow Sannin, and former pursuer. Despite his exasperation with Jiraiya’s political naïveté, Orochimaru quietly checks that he has protection on his Akatsuki mission 135 141 144.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — Apprentice assigned by Shazo. Sasuke intensifies his training under him after repeated defeats by Naruto; Orochimaru explicitly disavows taking his body 182 234.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Student and former spy. Kabuto secretly supplies the intelligence that allows Konoha to monitor Orochimaru before Shazo becomes Hokage 184 337.
  • Kimimaro — A dependent whose medical needs help prevent Orochimaru from abandoning Otogakure during Shisui’s pursuit 135.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Captor who exploits his damaged soul to immobilize his real body through a clone 136 137.
  • Tobirama Senju — Original creator of Impure World Reincarnation and an exacting evaluator of Orochimaru’s improvements; repeatedly praises his technical achievements 136 197 198 332.
  • Uchiha Itachi — Defeats him twice with Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu. Itachi nevertheless acknowledges that Orochimaru’s overall strength exceeds his own and attributes those decisive victories to their particular matchup 135 223.
  • Rasa — Target of the false anti-Hokage conspiracy, manipulated into joining the staged assassination 191 225.
  • Obito Uchiha — Wartime opponent whom Orochimaru defeats, seals, and appropriates as a Six Paths research specimen 351 352.
