Background / History

Early Career and Meeting Shazo

Shisui entered battle at a young age and earned the name “Body Flicker Shisui” late in the Third Shinobi World War. His reputation grew through extensive combat experience, including fighting Mist ninja. Within the Uchiha Clan, his fame eventually stood second only to clan head Fugaku Uchiha’s 29 65 226 228.

He first met Shazo beside a quiet creek in northeastern Konoha. Shazo’s lack of fear or hostility toward an Uchiha surprised him. After noticing inconsistencies in Shazo’s movements, Shisui used his Sharingan to confirm that the supposed Genin possessed Jonin-level strength. As a former Anbu member, he considered investigating a possible threat to Konoha his responsibility, but chose direct questioning rather than intruding into Shazo’s home 8.

Shisui initially suspected Shazo of being an undercover spy. Shazo explained that he lacked a Jonin instructor’s recommendation for earlier promotion opportunities, exposing assumptions Shisui had made about civilian ninja. Shazo then secured his promise to conceal his strength—even from the Third Hokage—placing Shisui’s commitment to keeping promises in conflict with his loyalty to Hiruzen 9 10.

Ambush and Apparent Death

After Danzō ambushed him and stole one eye, Shisui entrusted his remaining eye, hopes, and responsibilities to Itachi. He chose suicide in the belief that his death would help prevent conflict between the clan and village. Shazo later discovered him beside a creek, blinded and suffering severe internal injuries, after killing a nearby Root ninja 27 43 44.

Shisui initially saw no reason to live, believing Itachi would resolve the crisis. Shazo’s warning that Itachi would instead slaughter the Uchiha provoked an anguished denial. When Shisui appeared to die, Shazo enclosed him in a wooden coffin and sustained him with chakra, eventually storing the coffin in his basement 27 28.

His disappearance accelerated the crisis he had hoped to prevent. The Uchiha found his blood, blamed Root, and largely abandoned peaceful reconciliation. Believing Shisui dead also triggered Itachi’s Mangekyō Sharingan awakening 29 30.

Return During the Massacre

During the massacre, Shazo awakened Shisui’s consciousness and transmitted the events outside the coffin to him. Witnessing Itachi and Obito slaughtering the clan shattered Shisui’s confidence in his decisions. Seeing Shazo’s Wood Release overpower Susanoo restored his hope and convinced him to act 43.

Still too injured to fight, Shisui emerged before the gathered Konoha ninja and confronted Itachi. He then publicly identified Danzō as his attacker and accused him of conspiring in the massacre. Root’s attempt to silence him, including its refusal to obey Hiruzen’s order to stop, turned the assembled ninja against Danzō 43 44.

Shisui’s remaining faith in Hiruzen collapsed during the aftermath. Recognizing that Shazo had saved both his life and his clan, he transferred his trust to him. Shazo subsequently recovered one eye from Itachi and the other from Danzō, restoring Shisui’s sight 46 48 50 51.

Clan Recovery and the Hokage’s Impeachment

Shisui assisted Izumi with the Uchiha’s recovery but rejected becoming clan head. Danzō’s attack, Itachi’s betrayal, and Hiruzen’s complicity had left him fearful of politics and unwilling to pursue the Hokage’s position 51.

His support nevertheless became central to Shazo’s challenge to Konoha’s leadership. He joined Shazo’s attack on Kumogakure’s embassy, then pledged to follow him as Madara had followed the First Hokage. Later, acting on Shazo’s instructions despite his own discomfort, he presented the case for impeaching Hiruzen before the Jonin Assembly and announced the successful vote 65 104 107.

As the assembly’s representative, Shisui accompanied Shazo to confront the invading Cloud army. Their mission ended with Kumogakure agreeing to withdraw and pay compensation. After Shazo became Fifth Hokage, he reassured Shisui that he remained trusted without a ministerial appointment and assigned him to locate Orochimaru 108 116 132.

Service Under the Fifth Hokage

Shisui led Konoha ninja, prisoners, and captured spoils away from Shazo’s battle with the reanimated First and Second Hokage, then protected the group from its shock wave. He later confronted Itachi during the battle with Akatsuki, withdrawing on Shazo’s command when the fighting ended in a ceasefire 138 139 147 149 151.

His later assignments included sealing the Hyuga Main Family leaders’ memories of Caged Bird · Devour, intercepting Obito during Konoha’s staged rebellion, and investigating sensitive intelligence for Shazo. He also delivered the Uchiha Stone Tablet for examination by Shazo and the four Hokage 222 226 228 324.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Shisui and Izumi confronted Madara with their Susanoo, earning his recognition and an offer to join him. Both refused to betray the Fifth Hokage. Shisui intercepted a strike from Madara’s Complete Body Susanoo while protecting Izumi’s position 334.

During a later confrontation with reanimated Uchiha ancestors, Shisui, Izumi, and Kagami revealed their Mangekyō Sharingan after Tajima challenged Izumi’s leadership. The encounter became an argument over Madara’s Infinite Tsukuyomi plan rather than a battle 348.

Appearance

Personality

Shisui is upright, compassionate, and committed to protecting both Konoha and the Uchiha. His understanding of protection does not permit sacrificing the people entrusted to him: when sacrifice seems unavoidable, he offers himself instead. This conviction makes Itachi unable to justify the massacre to him 43 44.

His greatest weakness is his excessive deference to authority. He initially trusts Hiruzen unconditionally and even shares the secret of Kotoamatsukami with village leadership. Although the massacre destroys his faith in those leaders, it does not remove his tendency to seek someone worthy of absolute obedience; that trust shifts to Shazo 6 46 64.

Shisui is capable of recognizing his mistakes, but political maneuvering and the effects of self-interest often bewilder him. He prefers carrying out a trusted leader’s orders to devising policy himself. His obedience is strong enough to make him proceed with Hiruzen’s impeachment despite personally struggling with the idea 10 104 127.

This hesitation does not extend to enemy combatants. Against foreign ninja he acts decisively, while his battlefield experience supports rapid tactical adaptation even against unfamiliar ocular abilities 65 226.

Body Flicker and Swift Style

Shisui’s speed combines a long-established mastery of Body Flicker with his later integration of Swift Style 226 228.
