Background / History
Founding Konoha
Madara grew up during the Warring States period and formed a childhood bond with Hashirama Senju. He lost his father while young and his younger brother, Izuna, shortly after reaching adulthood. After Izuna’s death at Tobirama’s hands, the Uchiha faced possible extermination as the Senju gained powerful allies 335 348.
Madara eventually reconciled with Hashirama. Together, they fought across the Land of Fire, founded Konoha, and established the Shinobi Village Era. Their shared ambition was to end the warfare they had known since childhood 335.
His enforcement of Konoha’s authority extended beyond its borders. When the First Tsuchikage resisted attending the first Five Kage Summit, Madara defeated him at Iwagakure, destroying nearly half the newly built village. The encounter left the young Ōnoki with lasting psychological trauma 332.
Break with Hashirama
Madara recognized dangers beneath the apparent peace, but his disagreement with Hashirama ended in his departure from Konoha. Most Uchiha chose the village over him. Hashirama later acknowledged that his own mistakes had helped drive Madara away 199 335.
Madara returned to attack Konoha with the Nine-Tails. Hashirama intercepted him far from the village, and their destructive battle created the Valley of the End. Hashirama defeated him, shattering both his Susanoo-armored Nine-Tails and his pride 332 334 336.
Although Madara later claimed that the battle had merely been a scheme to obtain Hashirama’s flesh, the account of his aftermath describes profound despair. The possibility of awakening greater power was the hope that kept him alive 335.
Preparing His Resurrection
For more than twenty years, Madara lived in hiding while cultivating the Rinnegan. Following Black Zetsu’s guidance, he gathered ancient White Zetsu beneath the Land of Iron, where surviving God Tree roots could sustain them. Awakening the Rinnegan restored his confidence and gave him the foundation for his resurrection plan 335.
He placed his eyes in Nagato to nourish them and planned to regain a youthful living body through the Outer Path’s resurrection technique. He also rescued the gravely injured Obito and replaced missing portions of his body with White Zetsu 322 335.
To turn Obito into a successor, Madara controlled the Third Mizukage and orchestrated the circumstances surrounding Rin’s death. He implanted both a visible heart seal and a concealed brain seal in Obito, anticipating a future betrayal. Madara subsequently died of old age, leaving Obito to pursue the plan under his name 322 346.
Appearance
- Usual appearance: Wild, long dark hair and red armor—the same outfit Ōnoki remembers from his youth 332.
- Eyes: Can display the Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and pale-purple Rinnegan patterned with concentric rings 322 333 335.
- Six Paths form: Silver-white hair, a chakra-formed Ritual Robe decorated with black tomoe, and a plate-like horn covering his forehead 346.
- Final ocular mutation: A Rinne Sharingan develops between his brows before he casts Infinite Tsukuyomi 356.
Personality
Madara is intensely proud, domineering, and confident in his strength. He nevertheless respects demonstrated ability: Izumi and Shisui earn his recognition through combat, Shazo earns his admiration as a leader and prospective opponent, and Might Guy earns his declaration as the strongest taijutsu fighter he has encountered 323 334 350 353.
His arrogance does not ordinarily make him careless. Hashirama considers an ambush against him impractical because caution has become an ingrained survival habit from the Warring States period. His combat experience is formidable enough that Shazo deliberately maintains overwhelming speed to prevent Madara from identifying weaknesses in his fighting style 350 355.
His ideal of peace is absolute but coercive. He acknowledges Shazo’s achievements while dismissing peace dependent on a mortal leader as temporary. Believing Infinite Tsukuyomi will permanently eliminate suffering, he accepts killing opponents—even promising young clansmen—as a necessary price 333 334.
Hashirama disrupts his otherwise imposing composure. Madara longs for his recognition, repeatedly shows off before him, and imagines a dream world containing a gentler, more understanding Hashirama. Beneath his pride lies a history of bereavement, rejection, and despair that makes his faith in the Rinnegan particularly difficult to challenge 335 337.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Genjutsu
- Overwhelming ocular pressure: The spillover from his confrontation with Izumi and Shisui traps ninja several kilometers away in genjutsu 333 334.
- Mangekyō enhancement: An unnamed ocular technique strengthens his Complete Body Susanoo 334.
- Genjutsu: Rinnegan: Uses a binding illusion based on overwhelming the target with ocular power. It fails against Shazo’s powerful eyes and exceptionally strong soul 355.
- Genjutsu resistance: Fully purges Shazo’s Kotoamatsukami from his system during their confrontation 355.
Susanoo
- Complete Body / Perfect Susanoo: Creates a blue armored chakra giant with swords and wings. Against Shazo, it reaches approximately 150 meters tall 334 355.
- Variable scale: Enlarges his Susanoo to match Hashirama’s True Several Thousand Hands 336.
- Eyeless activation: His mastery allows him to produce the complete form using his own chakra even after losing both eyes 346.
- Extended perception: While blind, uses Susanoo to sense enormous chakra fluctuations and an Air Quake more than a thousand kilometers away 346.
- Breakable defenses: Izumi cracks its armor, and coordinated Kage attacks cripple it. Its protection is powerful, not absolute 334 350.
Rinnegan Techniques
| Technique | Applications and Limits |
|---|---|
| Limbo: Border Jail | Produces normally invisible shadows that defend him and attack independently. He deploys four against Shazo, who can destroy them 352 355. |
| Shinra Tensei | Releases large-scale repulsive force. Shazo counters it with Tenseigan: Reversal Barrier 354. |
| Banshō Ten’in | Pulls Hashirama into his grasp before he can complete his intended counterattack 352. |
| Chakra Absorption / Absorption Seal | Drains Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra and absorbs attacks including Dust Release, lightning chakra, sand, and corrosive mist 350 352. |
| Tengai Shinsei | A meteor technique capable of devastating an area large enough to cover Konoha; poorly suited to permanently killing reincarnated Hokage 337. |
| Chibaku Tensei | Creates a gravitational core that tears earth, trees, and mountain fragments into a growing airborne sphere 355. |
| Technique replication | Copies Hashirama’s Wood Dragon after seeing it. Cannot copy True Several Thousand Hands this way because he cannot sense natural energy at that point 336. |
| Nine Dragons Sealing | Turns nine Truth-Seeking Orbs into dragons that bind, compress, and seal the Ten-Tails into his body 346. |
Wood Release
- Deep Forest Emergence: His imitation Wood Release, obtained through White Zetsu and driven by his superior power, overcomes the reincarnated Hashirama’s version 335.
- Wood Dragon: Reproduces Hashirama’s technique and uses his dragon to destroy the opposing one 336.
- Multiple Wood Clone Technique: Creates eighteen clones capable of deploying their own Susanoo 352.
- Clone vulnerability: Shazo’s rapidly activated Dust Release destroys the clones inside their Susanoo without first breaking through the surrounding armor 355.
Six Paths Physiology and Healing
- Hand Seal-less Healing: Combines Rinnegan and Wood Release chakra to recover from catastrophic injuries, including head damage and the destruction of half his body by Night Guy 354.
- Regeneration: Regrows a severed leg after the Kage’s coordinated assault 350.
- Chakra-disrupting presence: His erupting aura destroys nearby chakra structures, preventing direct Flying Thunder God access to the space immediately around him 354.
- Limits: Kakashi’s spatial Kamui tears apart his hand, while Night Guy’s violent chakra temporarily suppresses his ninjutsu and ocular techniques 354.
Infinite Tsukuyomi and the God Tree
- Infinite Tsukuyomi: Projects his forehead eye’s ocular power onto the moon, casting a worldwide illusion 356.
- God Tree Realm: Deep Forest Emergence: Revives and reconnects ancient roots, suspending vast numbers of living beings in white cocoons 357.
- Hidden consequence: The tree extracts chakra and transforms humans into White Zetsu; Madara does not initially know this 357.
- Exceptions: Shazo withstands the worldwide techniques, and Izumi remains free alongside him 358.
- Personal cost: Developing the Rinne Sharingan ravages Madara’s body and permanently ends his capacity for further growth 356.
Combat Limitations
- Dependence on visual tracking: Losing sight of an opponent disrupts his judgment and can force him onto the defensive. Shazo exploits this with Instant Flash and unfamiliar close-combat techniques 355.
- Sage Mode incompatibility: Hashirama’s absorbed senjutsu chakra provides no enhancement to Six Paths Madara and instead reduces his power 352.
- Misplaced trust: He regards Black Zetsu as his own will and fails to recognize him as a threat even immediately before the betrayal 358.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Red armor — His recognizable battlefield attire before his Six Paths transformation 332.
- Black Staff / scepter — A Rinnegan-chakra weapon described as destroying what it touches. Kakashi’s Kamui cannot break it but knocks it out of Night Guy’s path 346 354.
- Truth-Seeking Orbs — Manifest behind him in Six Paths form; nine also become sealing dragons during his absorption of the Ten-Tails 346.
- Obito’s Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan — Retrieves it from Obito’s clothes after reclaiming his Rinnegan; no subsequent use is documented in the supplied passages 346.
- Preserved human tissue — Supplies Black Zetsu with samples for reincarnating Uchiha Tajima, Izuna, and Chiri 347.
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Childhood companion, fellow Konoha founder, beloved rival, and central emotional attachment. Madara seeks his recognition even while rejecting his attempts at reconciliation 332 335 337.
- Tobirama Senju — Longstanding enemy and Izuna’s killer. Madara treats him with open hostility and counters his battlefield attacks with Rinnegan techniques 332 336.
- Uchiha Izuna — Younger brother whose death preceded the Uchiha’s reconciliation with the Senju. Madara later requests his reincarnation to witness and support his victory 335 347 348.
- Uchiha Tajima — Father, lost during Madara’s youth. Included among the deceased clansmen Madara asks Black Zetsu to summon 335 347.
- Obito Uchiha — Rescued successor, impersonator, and controlled pawn. Madara engineers Rin’s death to awaken his Mangekyō, anticipates his betrayal, and ultimately takes back his eyes 322 346.
- Nagato — Carefully selected custodian of Madara’s Rinnegan and eventual instrument of his true resurrection 335 344.
- Black Zetsu — Supposed manifestation of Madara’s will; actually Kaguya’s child and his manipulator. Betrays him to resurrect her 358.
- Shazo — Admired leader and formidable opponent. Secretly permits Madara’s plan to advance because he intends to encounter Kaguya and obtain her chakra 323 333 358.
- Uchiha Izumi and Shisui Uchiha — Younger clansmen whose strength earns his respect. Both reject his recruitment attempt and remain loyal to Shazo 334.
- Might Guy — Opponent Madara recognizes as the strongest taijutsu fighter he has seen; nearly kills him with Night Guy 353 354.
- Kabuto Yakushi — Reanimates Madara, who recognizes his usefulness. Madara later exposes Kabuto’s connection to Konoha 322 323 339.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return and Command of Akatsuki
Obito abandons his impersonation and persuades Nagato to obtain the real Madara’s assistance through Impure World Reincarnation. Madara breaks the restraints prepared for him and questions Kabuto about the tailed beasts and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 322.
He subsequently negotiates directly with Nagato, bypassing Obito. Taking command of Akatsuki’s war effort, he arranges White Zetsu infiltration and coordinated assassinations triggered by his chakra signal 329 330.
Confrontation with Konoha’s Founders
Madara first tests Izumi and Shisui in a Susanoo battle. Their coordination earns his recognition, but they refuse his invitation to join him. The four reincarnated Hokage then arrive to confront him 334.
Hashirama and Tobirama reveal that the Uchiha Stone Tablet has been tampered with. Madara briefly wavers, then rejects their explanation after hearing that Shazo possesses the Rinnegan. He fights Hashirama with matching Wood Release techniques before escalating to enormous Susanoo and meteor attacks 335 336 337.
True Resurrection and Six Paths Transformation
Alarmed by powerful new combatants, Madara presses Black Zetsu to accelerate his resurrection. Nagato is forced to revive him, but Obito steals the original Rinnegan before Madara can reclaim them 344.
Madara defeats Obito’s rebellion through the hidden brain seal, retrieves his eyes, and becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki. He then orders further reincarnations to support his advance on Konoha 346 347.
Battle Against the Kage and Shazo
The four Hokage and four other Kage coordinate attacks against him, but his absorption and regeneration defeat their attempted finishing blow. He later completes the Ten-Tails using the Nine-Tails pearl and survives Guy’s devastating Night Guy 350 352 353 354.
Shazo finally engages him directly. Their battle exposes Madara’s dependence on visual tracking but also demonstrates his adaptability, Limbo defenses, and resistance to Kotoamatsukami. Madara eventually rises toward the moon and uses Chibaku Tensei over the battlefield 355.
Infinite Tsukuyomi and Betrayal
Madara develops the Rinne Sharingan, casts Infinite Tsukuyomi, and activates the God Tree. Believing he has ended war and suffering, he briefly experiences emptiness after accomplishing his lifelong purpose 356 357.
Shazo then reveals that he could have stopped him and had allowed the plan to proceed. Black Zetsu identifies himself as Kaguya’s child, pierces Madara’s heart, and floods him with the God Tree’s chakra. Madara’s soul is suppressed, his consciousness disappears, and his body transforms into Kaguya 358 359.
