Background and History

Human Teachings disciple

After transmigrating into the Human Race, Lin Yan sought safety from the Great Desolation's tribulations by following Xuan Du and becoming a disciple of the Taiqing Saint, Laozi. He initially possessed no obvious golden finger, but awakened the Myriad Worlds Chat Group after entering the Human Teachings. Laozi already knew of the group's existence and regarded it as a destiny item rather than a serious threat. 110 114 149

Lin Yan became the group owner because he was its strongest detected member, but he initially had little interest in posturing before cultivators from weaker worlds. The group instead opened special functions suited to his circumstances, becoming a practical aid to his cultivation. 114

During the struggle for leadership among the Human Race, Lin Yan used illusions and public ceremony to present Ji Xuanyuan as the destined Xuanyuan, helping concentrate the Human Race's destiny before Chiyou's Jiuli army attacked. At this point, he possessed Early Grand Unity Golden Immortal cultivation. 185

Tianxuan Realm trial

In a later trial within the Tianxuan Realm, Lin Yan appeared as its aloof Saint Son, a late Golden Core cultivator. He was defeated by Ye Ling, whose system supplied overwhelming techniques and temporary power. 302 303

Tieguai Li subsequently intervened, destroyed Ye Ling's extraterrestrial system, and explained that Lin Yan was undergoing a trial as the Taiqing Saint's second disciple. Lin Yan's body was restored, but his memories remained incomplete. 303

Age of Dharma's End

In the Republican-era Age of Dharma's End, Uncle Jiu found Lin Yan unconscious in a mass grave and kept him at the Public Mortuary. Lin Yan retained only his name and fragmented visions of immortals, the Eight Sceneries Palace, and his connection to the Human Teachings. 387

Uncle Jiu formally accepted him into the Maoshan lineage. After the Chat Group System resurfaced and supplied immortal-grade pills, Lin Yan entered Refining Essence into Qi overnight. 389 390 391

He saved Qiusheng from the hundred-year female ghost Dong Xiaoyu; when her attack touched him, her ghost body, resentment, and remnant soul were annihilated. The incident revealed an unexplained protective force within Lin Yan. 392

While rescuing Taoist Qianhe from the Imperial Zombie, Lin Yan invoked the Thunder Department and called down a bolt of heavenly thunder that destroyed the zombie instantly. He then broke through to Qi Refining to Godhood and formed his Yin Spirit. 395 396

Maoshan sect leader

Lin Yan returned to Maoshan with Uncle Jiu, received the Yuqing Immortal Method from the mysterious Cloud Daoist, and impressed Maoshan's elders with his cultivation, composure, and exceptionally stable Yin Spirit. 399 400

Shi Jian transmitted Maoshan's core lightning inheritance to him, entrusted him with the deputy sect-leader token, and gave him the Supreme Clarity Great Cavern Scripture. Lin Yan spent five years studying under Maoshan's elders before joining the War of Resistance, where he destroyed Japanese onmyoji formations and protected resistance forces. 401

After Uncle Jiu's death and Shi Jian's passing, Maoshan faced internal division. Lin Yan's cultivation, wartime reputation, and broad support allowed him to become sect leader. As Maoshan's leader, Lin Yan aided Zhou Qing and Long Aotian against a ghost epidemic, using his Yang Spirit to reach the underworld branch. Yun Zhongzi eventually revealed that Lin Yan was the second disciple of the Taiqing Saint, Moral Heavenly Venerable.
