Background / History

Whitebeard led one of the New World’s “Three Legendary Pirates” alongside the Flying Pirates and Roger Pirates. His personal strength deterred rival crews and drew pirates to follow him; he treated many crew members as his children 4 151 316.

He repeatedly fought the Marines, including Sengoku and Garp. When Teach was still aboard the Moby Dick, Whitebeard praised his victory over a Vice Admiral and took responsibility for the remaining fight 5 6 82. Years later, he allowed Teach to leave after watching him overcome the crew’s executives, acknowledging both Teach’s strength and his wish for freedom 89 90.

As the Night Pirates pressed into his territory, Whitebeard called on friendly crews and pirates who owed him favors. He then drove rival factions out of the Chaos Sea with destructive attacks before facing Teach in a five-day duel. Both revealed awakened Devil Fruit powers, but neither secured a decisive victory 471 486 492 494 495.

Following the poisoning of his sworn brother Kozuki Oden, Whitebeard sought retribution from the Marines and World Government 621. Later, the Marines captured his Fourth Division commander, Thatch, and announced a public execution to draw the Whitebeard Pirates to Marineford 669 670. As his crew suffered heavy losses there, Whitebeard ordered them to retreat, opened a chasm to separate them from the Marines, and died fighting the Marine officers 685.

Whitebeard was a six-meter-tall, powerfully built man whose crescent-shaped white facial hair made him immediately recognizable 69 82.

Whitebeard placed his crew’s safety above a needless direct clash with superior Marine numbers. He could be openly affectionate toward his “sons,” yet the loss or capture of a crewmate could provoke a major retaliation 5 6 316 670. His reputation also rested on favors to people outside his crew, many of whom helped defend his territory when it came under attack 471.
