Background / History

Shi Jian originated from the Mr. Vampire world as Maoshan's senior disciple. Ye Zhou summoned him with an A-rank character card and explained the Douluo Continent's martial soul system through a copy of the novel. Shi Jian accepted Ye Zhou's request for protection, giving him a talisman that could save his life once and alert Shi Jian for immediate teleportation. 10

Refusing to live indefinitely at the expense of a six-year-old Ye Zhou, Shi Jian established himself at Yunman Inn as a fortune-teller and feng shui practitioner. His accurate divinations attracted steady crowds after his strength became known in Heaven Dou City. 11 19 21

Ye Zhou later awakened Shi Jian's Thunder Fiend Corpse King martial soul, measuring his initial Soul Power at Level 84. Shi Jian then escorted Ye Zhou to Sunset Forest, where he acquired nine powerful soul rings and entered the ranks of Titled Douluo at Level 91. 12 13

Seeking to restore Maoshan in the new world, Shi Jian accepted Ye Zhou into the sect and pursued funding, land, and recruits. He used fortune-telling and the sale of Thunder Fire Talismans to raise capital, then leveraged his strength to secure royal backing for a Maoshan headquarters. 19 20 26

Appearance

Shi Jian is an elderly Daoist with a stern, imposing presence. He typically wears black-and-white Daoist robes and keeps his hair secured with a wooden hairpin or Daoist crown. 10 19

  • Stern facial expression and a dignified, severe bearing. 10
  • Often carries himself with the confidence of a senior cultivator and sect leader.
  • His Thunder Fiend Corpse King manifests as a three-meter humanoid zombie phantom with blood-red eyes, bluish-purple skin, exposed white bone, decayed flesh, and purple-black lightning. 12 26

Personality

Shi Jian is proud, blunt, and intensely self-reliant. Though Ye Zhou offers financial support, he refuses to become dependent on a child and instead earns money through divination. 11 He is openly materialistic when it serves Maoshan's restoration, demanding wealth, land, manpower, and later an annual salary before accepting outside affiliations. 20 33

He is also arrogant about his strength, readily challenging multiple opponents and dismissing the gap between himself and lower-ranked Soul Masters. 62 79 Despite this vanity, he consistently protects Ye Zhou, recognizes the boy's potential, and provides practical guidance. 13 17 84

Shi Jian carries a lasting grudge against Lin Fengjiao for his son's death. He agrees to temporarily cooperate with him only for Maoshan's growth and their shared pursuit of godhood. 127 128
